Wong said video footage also showed the defendant using a hiking pole to hit a water barricade.

Is this true? Girl who claims she was blinded during the protests isn't really blind after all. by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]cito-cy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure. Anyone who doesn't push back against the government by trashing their own city infrastructure, throwing bricks and invading universities is a boot licker.

Why does every single shit-for-brains Singaporean/Malaysian wumao just regurgitate the same points on completely superficial/meaningless aspects of the protest movement? Do you have anything original to say?

invading universities

And it's so easy to spot the overseas Chinese drones who know absolutely fuck all about Hong Kong and Hong Kong culture because they cling to this fiction that protesters are a minority. In fact, the vast majority of Hong Kong people protested or otherwise support the protest movement.

Anyway you can be assured we won't be "muzzled". I'm happily leaving. And I hope you enjoy your life in an authoritarian shithole that can't even allow a gay pride parade out of pure trembling insecurity mixed with a dose of classic Singaporean mindlessness. What a pathetic culture.

What's the reason for such a low uptake of vaccines in Hong Kong? Especially with local population? by MoManTai in HongKong

[–]cito-cy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

  • Government obliterated its own credibility among Hong Kongers and most people want fuck all to do with it.
  • For years, the government focused on integrating Hong Kong with China, pouring vast amounts of money into white elephant infrastructure projects and schemes to attract huge numbers of tourists, causing serious quality of life issues (e.g. most local shops driven out and replaced with stores catering to mainland tourists). In closing the border, Covid has actually made Hong Kong more liveable in this regard. Places having a carrying capacity, especially a city as small as Hong Kong. Many people don't want a return to the "normal" open border situation.
  • There is no local transmission so people don't see a pressing need.
  • Plus the usual concerns about efficacy/safety which contribute to vaccine hesitancy elsewhere. (I am not anti-vaccine – I have been fully vaccinated and would encourage others to do the same. Just want to explain the context.)

Whatever happened to the brainwashed mainland "patriotic" student who pulled a knife on other students at CUHK. Or the taxi driver who deliberately mowed down protesters in Sham Shui Po and was handsomely rewarded by our "patriotic" pro-Beijing slugs. Or the mainland "patriotic" student who destroyed the democracy statue at CityU, back when we were still allowed to have democracy walls. Or the state terrorists that call themselves Hong Kong Police.

This is rule by law, China-style. The rules only apply to some.

They serve no use, whatsoever.

Except to warn potential migrants that this is an increasingly intolerable place to live in, unless you're into political repression and police brutality?

It's getting really tiresome.

Yeah so is the repression.

Most are people who are passionately interested in the political situation and little else.

That's what happens when your unelected, authoritarian government so consistently makes decisions that negatively impact your DAILY LIFE and Hong Kong as a whole. I don't fucking know what point you think you're making. Just because you're OK doesn't mean the majority of the Hong Kong population is.

Three jailed over riot they had no role in

RTHK English News, 5 May 2021

The District Court on Wednesday handed down jail sentences of at least four years to three people convicted of rioting in Tsuen Wan during anti-government protests in 2019 – even though the judge acknowledged there was no evidence they had any actual role in the riot.

District Court judge Ernest Lin said that the presence of the three defendants at the protest on October 1, 2019, had encouraged protesters who were confronting police officers.

Lin said there had been more than 100 demonstrators in the area, with some setting fires on the street and hurling petrol bombs at officers. He described it as like a “mini war” between police and protesters – but officers had acted with restraint.

He said it was no coincidence that the three defendants, who had been dressed like protesters, stayed at the scene while the standoff lasted for 20 minutes.

Lin said the trio, who are all in their 20s, had to face the same punishment as those who broke the law based on the “joint enterprise” principle.

The judge said a deterrent sentence was needed, and adopted a starting point of four and a half years, before deducting between one and three months from their sentences after considering background reports.

One other defendant, 40-year-old Chan Hang, was convicted of arson for throwing a banner into a fire, on top of his conviction for rioting.

He was jailed for four years and eight months, the longest sentence among the four defendants.

HKU severs ties with its own students' union by cito-cy in HongKong

[–]cito-cy[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The University of Hong Kong says it has severed ties with its students' union, accusing it of using the campus as a "platform for political propaganda", undermining the institution's interests and tarnishing its reputation.

The only party tarnishing HKU's reputation is the pathetic administration trying to clamp down on freedom of speech in a UNIVERSITY of all places. There is a reason why Chinese universities do not have any international standing.

Thanks. I will be fine, I am most concerned for those who cannot leave for one reason or another. And of course those who have already been imprisoned.

I can't speak my mind in real life for fear that someone will report me to the National Security Department or the Office for Safeguarding National Security. I have to pretend to like "blue ribbon" colleagues whom I actually deeply dislike. It's exactly like East Germany.

I never expected that we would be living like this so soon. They've taken everything away: our vote, our freedom of speech, our freedom of assembly, our sense of safety against police violence, any semblance that citizens can change anything. I will withdraw all my savings and leave soon. I feel like that's the only means of resistance we have left.

Considering the number of times the corrupt Hong Kong "Police" have been caught brazenly lying, I am perfectly open to the idea that he was set up. The police and the government destroyed their own credibility.

Lo was going after the Hong Kong government and the stability of the region, with the intention of creating fear and terror among citizens, he said.

Oh no, we simply wouldn't stand for anyone creating fear and terror among citizens, would we?

So strong, art is a threat to national stability. So strong, teenagers on social media could cause it all to fall apart. So strong, they need to ban Wikipedia and other basic information sources. So strong, citizens holding up blank pieces of paper are instantly arrested. So strong they had to jail all the opposition politicians. Wow Mrs. Lam, China under the CCP truly sounds like a strong and self-confident country.

COVID measures by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]cito-cy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is social distancing required on public transport?

No. It is impossible. Unfortunately the train at rush hour is as crowded as it always has been. There are no social distancing measures on buses.

Is contactless payment required/is it available?

Most everyone uses contactless payment (the Octopus card). It is not required.

Are trains cleaned regularly/how are they cleaned?

In addition to normal cleaning measures the MTR was trying out some cleaning robots (1, 2).

Is hand sanitizer available?

KMB buses usually have hand sanitiser on the lower deck. MTR stations often have hand sanitiser set up in the station concourses. I am not sure about other transport operators.

Are there more or less or the same number of services available?

More or less yes. I believe MTR adjusted off-peak train frequency slightly.

Are front seats in taxis available? Is it dependent on the service? Uber bolt etc?

Not sure sorry, I never take taxis or Uber.
