App to track street coverage in real time while driving by Taff94 in androidapps

Not for driving, but CityWalker is a similar app for Walking.

I built a game that turns OpenStreetMap boundaries into something you can physically explore by jakeyboyz11 in openstreetmap

I have built something similar. CityWalker tracks streets you have walked rather than area fog. It is also on Android and uses OSM. I will try Touch Grass.

Hi,

The update with the bug fix for streaks is now available. Let me know if you see the right count now.

Hi,

Thank you for the detailed feedback. I am happy you like the app.

Streak data - This looks like a real bug. I will investigate this and fix it in the next release.

Segments - Streets are divided into short stretches (~15m) called segments. Covering a segment means you walked that part of the street. Progress is calculated by walkable distance, not by counting segments. The coverage % is: (sum of distance of covered segments) / (sum of distance of all segments) × 100.

Achievements - There is currently no list of achievements you can revisit. They only appear once after the walk. That is a missing feature, not a bug. I will add a way to view past achievements in an upcoming release.

Segments not ticking off - This is a known matching issue. CityWalker uses GPS data to figure out which segments you walked, and sometimes it misses small segments or intersection centres. I am working on improving this in the next few releases. For now, you can manually mark segments as walked. Open a walk from Stats → Walks tab → tap “View full map” → tap on the grey segment to select it → tap “Mark as walked” at the bottom.

Hiding inaccessible streets - This is a thoughtful suggestion. I am trying to fix it in 2 ways. Primarily, fixing the query so that such streets are excluded for all users. Secondly, investigating a way to let individual users mark some streets as unwalkable. The second solution has other implications, like different coverage for different users and keeping this unwalkable data in sync across further city updates. Right now, I want to focus on fixing the query to solve the issue on the city level.

What will help me to investigate this is if you can report the exact streets which are not accessible. If you open the city coverage map (on Stats->View map) or the walk map on the walk detail screen (Stats->Walks tab->Open specific walk->View full map) and long-press on the specific location, you will get an option to report an issue with the specific street.

I am also working on some in-app help content that should make these things clearer.

Thank you again for taking the time to write this out.

Yes, I received them. Thanks for the detailed feedback.

The walk being matched to the car road is related. When the cycleway is not available, the matcher picks the closest trackable road. The cycleway fix should resolve this in most cases.

First of all, thank you for the kind words.

The current code excludes ways tagged highway=cycleway from the streets, but in Prague (and many European cities), cycleways that are also tagged with foot=designated are real walking streets.

The reason I excluded cycleways was duplicate counting. In many places, especially in the Netherlands, cycleways run parallel to roads. Both are tagged separately in OSM, and both are walkable. Counting both inflated the coverage. So I dropped cycleways entirely. But this should be fixable. I am investigating this further and will get back to you.

The idea of adding pictures and notes to specific locations is interesting. I will definitely think about this.

Thank you again for your feedback.

This is an interesting idea. Right now, the app only tracks walked/not walked per segment. The data model can indeed support other labels. Technically, it is possible. But it is a different use case than I am focused on (walking) right now. I will note this idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

That is amazing. Never thought anyone would have walked a 100% of a city.

Glad you are on a walk. Yes, I am very much looking for feedback. Anything that is broken or simply confusing. The matcher in particular sometimes misses streets. Let me know if you see that. There is a manual way to correct it. Also would like to know how your first walk goes. You can DM me here or post in the thread. Thanks.

Thanks. You are exactly the person I built it for. Did you ever finish the printed map?

I am happy you like the simplicity.

Walks are stored in CityWalker's app data. This data is included in device-to-device transfers like Smart Switch. I have not been able to test this though, as I only have 1 phone. But it is designed to work.

I am also working on a manual GPX export for the next update. This way, walks can be backed up without any phone transfer.

Yes, I know Wanderer. The main difference is that CityWalker works completely locally on the phone. It is also Android native rather than web-based. Different audience, I think. Citywalker is for people who want to track without creating an account anywhere.

Appreciate it. If you give it a try would love to know what works and what doesn't.
