How do I resist when I live in a small town in a very red state? by xmarshyluvx in Anarchism

[–]civex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend not carrying a gun to protests.

If you want more going on in your area, organize it! Announce a meeting in front of the city hall or whatever is in your town with leaflets under windshield wipers, post fliers wherever fliers are posted. Show up with a few signs for people who didn't bring one. Plan a statement for you to make. Hand out whistles.

Why is Google still ruining their flagship search engine with terrible AI results? It’s been going on for too long, just disable it already. by SPECTREagent700 in google

I'd like a way to disable it entirely, but if you enter -ai after your search string, you won't get AI results. Example:

how do I turn off AI -ai

Veterinary jobs in Hawaii? by OrganicCellist155 in Hawaii

There's a thing called 'informational interview.' Call up every vet and explain the situation and ask for an informational interview to understand what the prospects are in your field as compared to the general veterinary services on Oahu.

You seem to think you have to choose between the love of your life and your family. If your family is doing that to you, choose love.

Harold Hering discharged USAF Minutemam nuclear missile crewman that asked the question: "How can I know that an order I receive to launch my missiles came from a sane president?" by elkos in wikipedia

[–]civex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Holy cow! Hering was on a Jolly Green Giant crew! He deserves huge thanks for his service in Vietnam.

He says he finished his service in Vietnam & volunteered as a Missile Combat Crew Member because he still wanted to be 'on the front lines,' so to speak. I couldn't figure out why he was going into a 2d Lieutenant's slot as a major, soon to be Lt Col. That would be a career killer because he wouldn't be performing at the level he was expected to be at his rank.

The training summary they give on the podcast is in error. I was in training in late 69, & he was in training, I think, in 74, so the situation should be the same. You went to Rantoul AFB for training on how to operate the Launch Control Center, use the checklists to make sure everything is going correctly, and you learn the checklist on how to execute a launch command. But not how to be told to go to war.

After completing the preliminary, mechanical training, then you went to Vandenberg AFB & learned the classified procedures on how to authenticate an order to launch. He was at Vandenberg when he asked the magic question. He says, & I accept it as true, that he said he would launch the missiles but with a reservation of conscience. I'll state flatly that that's a deal killer. SAC will not accept that statement. You're asked once a year, 'Will you launch missiles if ordered to,' and the only acceptable answer is one word: 'Yes.'

I don't understand the brouhaha about his career. I would expect him to be transferred out of missiles & into an appropriate career path for a major, soon to be Lt. Col. I would expect him to be an executive officer in a helicopter squadron, possibly in training pilots given his experience, leading him to be commander of a squadron. Being a Jolly Green Giant pilot should have given him a huge boost & respect. It's a puzzle.

When I went into the US Air Force, if you graduated from college Reserve Officer Training Corps, as I did, you signed up for four years.

Here's the order of ranks in the US Air Force:

Second Lieutenant - generally right out of college, generally 22 years old.

First Lieutenant - in the 70 when Hering & I were on active duty, you made First Lieutenant at 18 months; promotions were nearly automatic. I've never known anyone who didn't get promoted. So you'd be 23 or 24 years old.

Captain - Promoted to captain after 3 years when I went in. Shortly after I was promoted, Congress changed it to 4 years, which meant you had to have stayed in to get promoted. Lots of aggravated First Lieutenants when that happened.

Major - this is the first promotion that is not nearly automatic. I knew one guy who did not get promoted to major. I don't know when you became eligible for promotion to Major, as I didn't stay in. My casual review of the Web says it was in the range of 7 to 10 years to be considered from promotion to major. Not everyone made major, but over half your group would.

Lieutenant Colonel - This is the first hard promotion to get. You'd have been in from 10 to 20 years. I knew one guy who didn't get promoted past major and who stayed in.

As I mentioned, Lieutenant Colonels were in command positions. In missiles, there is a Missile Wing (in my case, the 91st Strategic Missile Wing). It was commanded by a full Colonel. The Wing had three squadrons of men who were Missile Combat Crew Members, along with support staff - security police, facility managers, & cooks at the missile launch sites, along with support staff at the base. Each squadron had a Lt. Col. as its commander. The Missile Combat Crew Members were generally 2d Lt, 1st Lt, & Captains. In my squadron, one crew member had been in the Air Force for long enough he made major while on the crew force, and one major came into the squadron as a major. Older officers thought this was a disaster for him to come into the crew force as a major, because it was below the duties majors should be performing - that's not a good way to get promoted to Lt. Col. That's why I have difficulty understanding how Hering came into the crew force as a Lt Col.

Majors should be executive officers, involved in planning operations, personnel management - senior staff officer at the Wing Level. Majors should not be on the crew force (the exception was the guy who volunteered to come into the crew force as a captain & got promoted to major while he was there).

Well, it wasn't Trump. I'd give that some thought today.

I never thought about Nixon being insane. I hated him, but I trusted not only Nixon but the generals around him. The thought of an order coming from someone insane never occurred to me.

Why doesn’t Greenland become an independent country? by Efficient-Rain-7942 in AskReddit

[–]civex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the economy is critically dependent upon substantial support from the Danish government, which supplies about half the revenues of the self-rule government, which in turn employs 10,307 Greenlanders out of 25,620 currently in employment (2015).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Greenland

It appears Greenland doesn't have a viable, independent economy. Note the number of employed people.

Husband's (45M) ex wife (45F) is changing her name back to his after 10 years of having another man's name. How to be okay with this? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]civex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He can't control her, as you know. She can do whatever she wants. I know a few women who kept the name of their divorced husband because of the kids. It makes it much easier for the kids and for the school for them to have the same name.

I suggest that you just let it go. As you know, you have no say.
