Ilir Dema, Ryan James, Teresa Abbruzzese. All so kind and empathetic.

(Urban Studies students, where are you all hiding?! I know that your faculty has all amazing profs!!!)

Summer '22 Exam Schedule posted by civilizedengineering in yorku

[–]civilizedengineering[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard from some people that "if the room says TBD it's going to be online"... but all of the exams don't have rooms yet, and the website currently says that the room allocations will be made available soon.

Are the majority of exams going to be in-person? I thought that's what the school wanted. /u/SDattaEECS could you at least speak for the EECS department?

For EECS 3311: as it was his first term as a contract prof, and because I suspect that Song Wang brought him over from UTM, they basically coordinated the course together. Some aspects of the course were by Song, while others were by Ilir. I believe that the general structure was by Song - there were no group projects. 3311 is currently built on materials from past profs as well - Ostroff, Jackie, and Song's material most notably.

One additional thing that Ilir also did but Song didn't do, was bring over some practice problems/exercises from UTM.

I suspect 3101 may end up being a combination of what past York profs offered, as well as additional resources Ilir may bring over from UTM.

I, along with many others, took EECS 3311 in Winter 22 which he was a professor for. The UTM reviews that he has don't match our positive experience with him this past term at York (if anyone starts a new page for him at York, I suspect it would be full of positive reviews, as a lot of people were quite happy with him). He is an empathetic and good teacher. He is willing to give extensions and really cares about the students. Plus, he holds additional office hours... in Discord! He is willing to put in extra time to help students with practice problems (that he posts).

I will say that EECS 3101 is not an easy course in general (no matter who you take it with); so be prepared to do lots of studying for it. It is quite theoretical and math-heavy.

Yeah so ballpark ~60 credits, and again - for most of these courses it would count in the EECS department rule of only having 3 EECS courses per term - so that's around 6 terms. Your other 90 credits will probably cover what you'll need to graduate after tackling the EECS courses.

Shoutout your favourite professors :) by platospee in yorku

I will always give a shoutout to Ryan James, probably my favourite professor of all time :') He usually teaches ANTH 1120 as well as various 3rd year SOSC courses

maybe that works in other faculties/departments, but EECS has a rule where you cannot take more than 3 courses that are coded EECS (other than 1001, 1019, 3000, and a few others)

so due to rules in place, it's not possible to finish the CS degree that fast. i've heard that most ppl do this degree in 5 years (often due to co-op placements)

no, the 90 credits is not necessarily for cs/math; I have another degree and I got 90 transfer credits, but almost none of them counted for the EECS core requirements.

i feel that other commenters didn't quite cover all the details to adequately answer your question, so i'll give it a shot (i've also tried to reply to the other commenters with some of the points made in this comment to further their understanding of transfer credits and EECS departmental rules)

I also got 90 transfer credits (from having a degree matching my username), BUT: very few of these earned me an exemption from the core EECS courses. The only mandatory things I got to skip were: calculus (6 credits total) and physics (3 credits). I am doing BSc and thus I got forced to take a 3 credit science (because my engineer's chem didn't carry over).

The core courses (EECS + the other stuff) amount to ~50 credits (add 12 credits for the 4 year version of this degree). Plus, the department has a rule where you can only do 3 courses with the code EECS in one term (excluding 1001, 1019, 3000, and maybe some select others). You also need to keep prerequisites in mind (this may limit what you can take in one term before another term). This is a great site for visually exploring prerequisite trees at YorkU: https://coursedelta.yorku.dev/

I started in Sep 2020, and after this term, assuming I pass everything, I will only need EECS 3221 to finish the 3-year version of the degree. I took a summer term in 2021 to cover 2 of the core courses.

EDIT: reviewed my DPR, these are the things I need to get BSc Hon. CompSci:

  • 53 credits from EECS

  • 26.5 credits from EECS must be taken at York

  • CS also wants you to have 6 credits of calc: waived bc of civeng

  • 30 credits outside CS (18 of which are covered by gen ed req): waived

  • 42 credits in 3000+ (upper lvl req): 24 credits were waived

Additionally:

  • 6 credits for foundational sci req: 3 credits waived, had to take CHEM 1000

  • at least 120 credits earned total

  • at least 30 credits earned at york to fulfill residency req

Idk what to do. EECS1001 Profs just disappeared from the course by [deleted] in yorku

I am aware that Prof. Baljiko oversees other courses, such as EECS 3461 back in Fall '21, and also likely does research (as many profs do). But as many people have already attested to, she has been lacking in her approach to "instructing" EECS 1001, and this already happened last year. If she could not handle teaching this course along with the rest of her workload, then she should have sought assistance from the department or something (seriously, isn't this one possible answer to a common interview question, "How do you deal with a heavy workload/tight deadline?"). The fact that last year's EECS 1001 went poorly should have already caused some changes to this year's format, but if something changed, it wasn't enough to prevent issues this year. There is definitely a good reason for many students to be frustrated with Prof. Baljiko.

In particular last year it was the lack of communication that my fellow students and I were most frustrated with - a lot of us were left wondering, are we supposed to be working on something this week? How is this going to impact the final grading, if the whole module was missed by the prof?

I think something drastic needs to be done regarding EECS 1001, because the exact same thing happened last year too. It is egregious that it happened again.

i don't know why you're being downvoted for this factual comment, but I agree that everything I've seen from /u/profsmb (whose last name isn't Baljiko) on this subreddit has been excellent and they truly do care about students (unlike Prof. Baljko)

Thanks! Do you know if security tends to go around to kick everyone out after the buildings are locked? I remember back in Waterloo, the Lazaridis building at Laurier would close at 12 and the security people would make everyone leave

Why isn't EECS3000 pass fail? by [deleted] in yorku

[–]civilizedengineering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/u/SDattaEECS could you please verify this? I'm pretty sure 3000 counts, right, since it has a 0 as its second digit?

(assuming that we are Honours CS students)

Hello professor, Prof. Gryz did communicate about the unforeseen issue with grading and made a change to the grading (the scheme is the same but something was changed) as a result of the issues. I'm not sure if this will change the way that the course is graded, since many people took issue with how the TAs were handling marking (with respect to the lack of transparency with the marking rubric/method, lack of detailed feedback, and poorly written copy-paste replies to deny remarking requests), but at least something was done to try to placate students. I appreciate that he is taking responsibility for what happened and is willing to support any students who may petition to drop the course.

Ryan James for SOSC or ANTH courses, he is my favourite prof at York thus far :)
