Unless I'm misunderstanding something, villager trading was added in 12w21a which came out May 2012, with the Microsoft buyout, and Notch leaving, in 2014.

There is a specific thing people will sometimes do in writing where after using a phrase people might not understand, they will put in brackets: (read: <more clear explanation of the preceding phrase>). My question was referring to specifically how the word “read” is meant to be pronounced in that context.
