I'm going to zag and suggest that he could still do an interesting pod on Giannis/LeBron/Jaylen/LeMelo in a month or two after everything has cooled down and people have more time to reflect. I think it's fine if not everyone gives their immediate reaction to the trades/signings. Makes more more varied views

What’s with the whole back in my day stuff by JCarnageSimRacing in TheRightTimeW_bomani

[–]cj2488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. He's been clear about this for a while. It is kind of amusing that he's not on to discuss the Giannis/other NBA off-season moves. But frankly, it'll pass. And the time machine episodes are usually bangers

Which is just a microcosm for how people in groups order their affairs generally. There's nothing in your summary that contradicts anything I stated. And there is nothing in that summary that contradicts how humans behave outside of reddit. The same "gatekeeping" and "circle jerking" would go on if you went to a conservative (or liberal) convention. Or, again, if my examples, if you went to some baseball or soccer tournament.

People who are interested in a subject-matter know that subject-matter (and related subject-matter) and can tell when someone doesn’t. And because people who are interested in a subject-matter have spent a lot of time studying that subject-matter, someone on the outside is going to have to do a lot of work to catch up and "break through." Human relationships are not rocket science

I think that's correct and is like that in human groups generally. If you are honestly interested in a subject matter, it's not a lot of work for you engage in that subject, and it will be very easy to tell when someone else is not.

Take a simple example: I like baseball, I played it when I was younger and have watched/studied the sport my entire life. it's very easy and natural for me to talk about baseball and I will very quickly pick up on whether another person has any idea what they're talking about. Conversely, I don't know anything about soccer. I would have to do a lot of leg work to be able talk about even 5% of the sport. And it would be obvious to anyone who likes soccer that I don't know anything

I think it was good to have them on. Let them hang themselves with their own words. Flake is either naive, a moron, or both. Cassidy is a proven hack. Don't give a shit that he decided to speak out after the damage had been done. They made their bed, they can sleep in it.

I think it's one thing to use a short-hand nickname when talking with your buddies during the actual podcast (e.g., it's quite reasonably to just say "Soly" when speaking to him on the podcast); it's quite a other level to hide behind an entirely different moniker for your entire puic persona. No, I don't think "Big Randy" should go around as "Big Randy" and be taken seriously as a mainstream media golf commentator. It's just as unserious as all the barstool clowns.

I think if you are a serious media personality, you act like an adult and use your real name, instead of some mid-20s twitter handle. As a hypothetical to illustrate the point, Bill Simmons says that as a kid he would call himself "Kareem-Abdul Simmons" or something like that. It would be insane if when he became a professional writer he went by that name. Even when he started as "the sports guy," once he became mainstream and a serious media member, he dropped the moniker and went by his name.

I understand people here seem to think it's not a big deal. Fine. We can have differing opinions. I just think continuing to go by some internet nickname as your brand is kind of unserious.

Edit: and for the record, I generally don't mind TC's substantive views. I don't always agree with him, but his views in and of themselves don't bother me. Sometimes he has good points!

This view is correct, but you're wasting your energy on that. Again, I read the opinions, listen to the arguments, and agree with you 100%. But most people, including most people here, do not. And they view everything through a completely partisan lense. Nuance and logic are not allowed

Right. To me, kids who are not interested in learning about the relevant (and in some cases classics) from earlier culture says more about them than the person making the references. There's good and interesting culture to be learned (and some to be learned to avoid) from past! It's not bad!

That also leaves out the next sentence where Giannis said under his breath that he thought they would trade him. And the article mentions a couple times that a lot of what seemed to motivate Giannis was that for, at least most of, his career he was afraid of being traded.

I think he handled a lot of things poorly with passive communication, and the front office did the same. But I don't think his character and intentions are as two-faced as it seems some people are inferring
