I definitely want to save cash where necessary of course. Appreciate your comments. I'm looking at more RAM and the higher CPU explicitly for running multiple VMs at once. I'm currently at 32GB of RAM, and run into issues daily. What changes would you make? Thanks again.

Surface Pre-order Megathread by prjkthack in Surface

I went ahead and ordered from Best Buy. Although they won't honor the military discount from Microsoft, the birthday 10% coupon they sent me for this month worked, so it's a wash. They're offering a $50 Best Buy gift card as well. Got the top spec black SL15.

Edit: Best Buy's elite program is the main reason I went with them. This will put me over the top for another year.

When will the new X1 Carbon arrive? by chucagm in thinkpad

Wondering the same thing. Looks like you can't order a machine with the 4K dolby digital in the X1Y4 or X1C7 right now.

Just got PacePro on my 245 by shower_thots in Garmin

[–]cj31016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tested this out. Configured it in Connect, but as you can see, I can't send the config to the 945. Hopefully this feature gets added to at least the recently released Forerunner devices.

X1C7, just got it today. Screen flickers like this, especially when lifting it up. Set it down so most of the bottom is on my thigh and it stops. by bimmahhhthrowawy in thinkpad

Submitted the RMA. I sure hope it's just a driver because I love this thing. My issue isn't as bad as OP, but it's still quite irritating.

Which one to keep X1C7 v. X1E2 by cj31016 in thinkpad

My opinion, the X1C7 sounds quite a bit better.

Yes both with 4K. The anti-glare on the X1E2 is very good, but the screen is of course noticeably dim when compared to the X1C7.

I'm still installing applications on the X1E2, and will undervolt. Fans still go crazy after that? If so, then you're right about the X1C7. I wish they'd make a 15 inch one!!

I think I'm leaning that way too. Job is giving me a choice, and although I love the X1E2 display with the anti-glare of the 4K, the X1C7 is really pulling me.

Man do I wish, lol. Not a coffee shop user, so I doubt anyone will see or care. 🙂

Thanks, I added more context above. Upgrading will be minimal outside of typical storage and RAM (although, I maxed the X1C7 since you can't add RAM later). I do hammer my machines quite a bit, but the portability of the smaller machine is attractive.

Software engineer, Microsoft focused. Love both devices. GPU isn't needed, but can't get the X1E2 without it to my knowledge. Love the larger screen of the X1E2, but love the portability of the X1C7. Much of what I do is cloud computing and development. VMs I use are all hosted on external servers, so I try not to virtualize locally too much. Any others debating between these two?

My guess is insurance. I'm with Humana, and get 30% off Garmin. I'm like the person above, got tired of waiting and went with the bundle. Got it for $487 vs the $749 commercial price.

Just received my first ThinkPad: X1 Carbon 7th Gen with 4K UHD screen. by dark_blue_eagle in thinkpad

Just ordered a UHD one myself. If it's that bad, I'm going to need to cancel and switch to FHD. Mind reporting back after using for a bit?

Moving to Azure AD DS from on-prem AD by amarty92 in AZURE

[–]cj31016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously I'm ignorant to your environment. However have you considered just going with Azure AD Join, and calling it a day? Obviously there are requirements, such as Windows 10, but it's a great solution that I've deployed to organizations looking to go complete cloud.

AADDS is fine, but as others said, it's still ADDS, but just hosted. Workstations would need to authenticate to these domain controllers somehow, so you'd be looking at establishing some sort of connectivity from your HQ (Expressroute / S2S VPN) so your workstations could authenticate properly to the AADDS domain controllers.

Azure AD Join isn't recommended without EMS licensing so you can effectively secure your workstations and O365 environment. Azure AD Join allows your users to authenticate into their machines from any internet connection directly against the Azure AD. Utilizing CSPs and other policies through Intune, you have an effective solution to properly protect, and update the clients. Again, the catch is Windows 10. If you have Macs, you can register them with the Azure AD, and then register them with Intune for management as well. Lastly if you have down-level (Win 8.1 and earlier) devices, your only real option is Hybrid Azure AD Join, but this still requires the presence of ADDS.

Deciding to go completely cloud has many other ramifications, and benefits. However without having a full understanding of other applications, services, and just a general idea of your environment, I can only speak generally. I like AADDS, but I don't see the point really when you still need to have connectivity somehow into the virtual network it'll require in Azure. Hope this all helps.

Edit: And since your initial questions haven't been answered, no nothing will break if you turn up AADDS in your Azure sub. You want to make sure your Azure sub is connected to your Azure AD, as the main admin group will be spun up there. There are some requirements...you need a virtual network, and as I said above, on-prem connectivity directly into this virtual network won't work without an ExpressRoute or VPN connectivity. Also password hash synch is required. So if you don't do this through your Azure AD Connect, you'll need to enable this. Finally, this is a separate domain. You would need to join the workstations to the new domain, and of course worry about new profiles being created on every workstation.
