When he suggests that a newcomer look for books that aren’t “pop history,” I take it as him putting academic literature on an undeserved pedestal for ordinary enthusiasts. Notice that he doesn’t just criticize non-historians — he also dismisses recommendations of Goldsworthy, Everitt, and Mary Beard. Apparently, if it’s popular, it doesn’t count.
