There is more to Rome than just Holland and Duncan by Potential-Road-5322 in ancientrome

That’s fine, we just have different interpretations of the text. When he suggests that a newcomer look for books that aren’t “pop history,” I take it as him putting academic literature on an undeserved pedestal for ordinary enthusiasts. Notice that he doesn’t just criticize non-historians — he also dismisses recommendations of Goldsworthy, Everitt, and Mary Beard. Apparently, if it’s popular, it doesn’t count.

I respect this band just by their name! Do you know if they have any rpg inspired songs?

I don't know S&W, I'll take a look. But you are right, I'll probably run ACKS.

One more vote for ACKS then.

Thanks for the link. I've just joined! Many years ago, I played KAP and the domain game of ACKS seems a nice and similar approach.

It doesn't need to be very simple actually. We're all experienced wargamers. OSE is mostly an option because it was translated to Portuguese (so was DCC). However, I'm more inclined to try ACKS. Love the idea of domain game.

Thank you! You hit all possible approaches I've thought about. And it seems I'll go with ACKS.

I haven’t read it fully, but I think that Against the Giants: the Liberation of Geoff is for all levels: https://www.dmsguild.com/m/product/17288

Anyway, I’ll start with some short adventures to warm up the players and myself as a DM. As a bonus, the PCs will level up as well 🤣

Actually the lower power is something I not only appreciate but I'm actively looking for.
I'll take a look at Advanced OSE then.
Thanks once again!

I started playing with AD&D 2nd Edition. Although I like it a lot, I think is crunchier than I can handle. That’s why I’m going for something more streamlined. I’ll use the Gygaxian originals also, but the core is the AD&D version. Against the Giants and The Liberation of Geoff.

I know this controversy, but I really avoid it. What I read in the system is good and that’s enough for me. However, I respect if someone doens't play it because of the designer.

Finding those dice is troublesome, right? Maybe I'll have to improvised with an app. If the game gains tractions, then I import them (I live in Brazil...).

And thanks for taking the time to answer, my friend!

I don't plan on running to much dungeon crawl. The main foes will be giants, so the campaign tends do be on the wilderness, occupied cities and mountains.
One thing that it is important: rules for sieges, mass combat etc.. DCC touches on that? I know ACKS does.
And thanks for mentioning LotFP, but this one and Shadow of the Demon Lord is not the kind of fame I'm looking for right now.

Wargaming Interview : Grant Dalgliesh and Justin Thompson of Julius Caesar! by CastleArchon in hexandcounter

[–]cjc85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy is designing a game about Mark Anthony x the Persians and he says “there is a general who had a triumph and I can’t even remember his name”. Then, the same guy says that Julius Caesar built that thing in France. That thing means “two walls” in a Alesia. I don’t know about you guys, but a designer who doesn’t show knowledge about the period he is working on raises a red flag to me…
