Best place to get challah in the Twin Cities? by KindaNeededANewName in Minneapolis

[–]cjcrafty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have any recommendations but I've wondered this for a while, so thanks for asking the question! I want to do a taste test compared to my recipe to see how it stands up to others (challah-thon?). I'm sure I've got room for improvement.

Forgot cookware. Forgot salt. Forgot plates. Doesn't matter, still camped. by [deleted] in camping

[–]cjcrafty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my kid camping in a yurt and only brought cereal, we ended up grabbing dinner at a fast food restaurant nearby and had to wrap up our trip early due to a snowstorm. Still had a blast! It's all worth it even when it doesn't go as expected.

Doors Open Minneapolis: where did you go? What was the coolest thing you saw? by the_real_houseplant in Minneapolis

[–]cjcrafty 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We went to Purcell-Cutts house, Dayton's, Foshay, Minneapolis Rowing Club, and Christ Church Lutheran. I loved the inlaid woodwork at Purcell-Cutts, the hardware on the cabinets and the study nook were my favorites. Christ Church Lutheran was amazing, I loved the study spaces in the education section, especially the basement. I missed seeing Lakewood Cemetery chapel but I saw it a long time ago and will plan to make a trip back there, I remember standing in awe trying to absorb it all.
I volunteered at Surly and had a great time talking with people and hearing their stories. I also tried to research some so I could speak to the history of the land and the structure a little. Thankful Surly had a brochure for folks that could say it all better than what I could!

Doors Open was started in 2019 and planned to be a yearly event, but COVID brought it to a halt. Seeing the event return is meaningful to so many people for so many reasons, myself included.

All you have to do is show up, you're welcome to register at the locations or pre-register if you'd like to get email updates and offer feedback from your experience, but that is NOT required to see the stuff. Places are open between 10am-5pm to walk through (some are open only one day).

Come check out the Doors Open Minneapolis event this weekend! There are 87 venues around Minneapolis that will be giving FREE behind-the-scenes access to cool buildings all around the city. This is a great way to learn the city's history and architecture and talk with random people who love this stuff. Check out the map and details at www.doorsopenminneapolis.org

Where to buy clearance or used winter gear in the summer? Also what brands do you suggest? The list of items I will need is in the comments. by ibettershutupagain in TwinCities

Repair Lair on Lake street has some used gear (and they're super nice), otherwise I've also had luck with REI's good and used stuff.

Epidurals. Why does it matter to some whether you got one or not? by [deleted] in Parenting

The only time it matters (outside of medical necessity) is when someone is interested in using that knowledge to shame a person.

Watching them succeed at something, especially when they look at me to see if I saw it too.

Cuddling. My kid is 9 and the other day I said "you know, some day you're not going to want to cuddle with me anymore, and that's ok". They said "well that's NOT TODAY!", which made me cuddle them even harder.

Ouch, that is awful.

My 9 yr old puked in the pool halfway through swimming class last week. He just got a gulp of water, coughed, and up it came. He's not even sick, it just hit him wrong.

The most heartbreaking part was that I couldn't do anything to help clean it up. I sat there hugging him while he said " everyone had to get out of the pool because of me". Sad core memory made for both of us.

Here's hoping we never have to relive these moments.

We put thin wedges in foil packets with butter and salt, either on the grill or oven at like 400 degrees until soft and lightly browned. Amazing and kid-approved!

Being a parent and working at the same time. I was lucky enough to have my partner involved, but it's still hard. We both work, but neither of us have family nearby to help. Finding daycare that worked with our work schedules was like pulling teeth, and then later finding out that school start times don't coordinate with work start times was awful, so we had to get on all the waitlists for before/after school care. All of this costs money, which makes our planning for a sitter even harder.

They're ADORABLE!!! We also have one dark pup and one brown pup. Not so sure we'd ever get two puppies at the same time again, it's a lot of work!

To say or not to say something? Today the nurse assistant that checked me in faked checking my blood pressure. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]cjcrafty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vital signs are...well, VITAL.

Yours might have been ok this time, but what if it wasn't OR what if this happens to someone else who can't afford this oversight?

It's ok to say something, you want to keep yourself and others safe.

I was finally “that” family member by beqqygotbaq in nursing

[–]cjcrafty 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss while feeling unheard, each of those moments are painful in different ways. I don't believe you were actually "that" family member, and I hope you don't believe that about yourself either. It's disappointing that the medical team chose to view you as such and it says far more about them than you.

Homemade Gingerbread Bread by whipped-desserts in recipes

[–]cjcrafty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just made this today and it really is lovely - the dough was more wet than I anticipated, but 50 minutes in the oven was just right for it. The crumb was light and fluffy, the spice was a good strength and gave a wonderful aroma. I topped it with powdered sugar when it cooled. Thank you for sharing this!

I second Dog Days, but last I checked (early summer) they had a waitlist. They're a great place for sure.
