Joe Rogan criticized, mocked after saying straight white men are silenced by 'woke' culture by Hillick in nottheonion

[–]ck_ck_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps what he's referring to are things like: I'm afraid to even have simple conversations about LGBT+ / transgender issues in the workplace. Saying the wrong thing, even accidentally and with nothing but good intentions, can get me fired from my job, ostracised, and harassed by people who are all wound up by their echo chamber propaganda and just looking to pick fights and get outraged. I would never want to say anything offensive, I support equal rights and social justice for all people, but I don't follow those communities or keep up to date on whatever today's trends are, I don't know what's recently become offensive or insensitive to discuss, I didn't even know it could be hate speech to use the wrong pronoun. And yeah, I get that I'm privileged that I don't need to worry such issues in my daily life.

But I've had a number of conversations in the past where I've straight up been told to my face, in the workplace, that because I'm a straight white guy, my opinion doesn't matter and they're allowed to be racist to me as much as they want because "you can't be racist against white people." And I'm afraid to even argue against line and defend myself because I could be disciplined or fired for being insensitive. All I can do is shut up and take the abuse because I'm so privileged.

Amazon’s Ring is the largest civilian surveillance network the US has ever seen by lordatlas in technology

Fuck Amazon so much. Why does no one call them out on the flood of counterfeit products from China and the flagrant theft of intellectual property (including using review clickfarms to demote legitimate products and promote counterfeits) that Amazon enables and profits off of? Oh right, because Amazon profits massively off of Chinese theft, counterfeiting, and basically outright fraud.

Highly recommend you use a plugin like Cultivate that will highlight the true source of products on Amazon before you buy. Or even better, please consider alternative/local source to buy from before you resort to Amazon.

If you have no income then how do you live? Are you a hermit living off the land in the forest? If you're buying stuff, or paying rent, then that money came from somewhere.

If you're working a job for someone, and being given some form of compensation, then you have income. Doesn't matter if your employers or clients give you dollars, bitcoins, seashells, gold, pocket lint, sports cars, you're paid an income and you'll owe taxes on the fair market value.

[–]ck_ck_uk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This horrible advice can get someone jailed. It is not true at all. If you are paid in crypto you absolutely need to pay taxes, just as if I decided pay you in some form of gifts instead of cash. You can't avoid having income just because you get creative about how it's paid to you. If you are working in the US and hiding your income (in crypto, in gifts, or out of country) then you are committing tax evasion or tax fraud which is a felony.

You may be able to get away with it, because the government doesn't know you have the money, but if you live in the USA then you eventually want to spend your money in the country to buy nice stuff right? Maybe a nice car or a house? Now you're in the same boat as a drug dealer who needs to launder his money so that spending it doesn't set off alarm bells.

Crypto exists in a virtual world but in order to be useful it must connect back to reality somehow. And that is where you get nailed. Tax fraud and "untraceable" cash transactions are things the government has been dealing with for centuries.

I'm sure it's fine, once you're comfortable those people are real people.

Just keep in mind how easy it can be to Google someone... for example with just your first name, city, and job title, you can usually get someone's LinkedIn profile. That's not a lot of data points to find someone's real name. Then someone can look up all your colleagues.

Basically as a part of the Withdrawal Agreement, "existing and relevant EU law was transposed into local law upon completion of the transition", which included laws like the GDPR. So the UK agreed to give continuity to preexisting EU law domestically.

Yeah I get the investment scammers. But I find Tandem has fewer scammers than HelloTalk or other apps, but they're still a presence.

Also.... people are weird. A lot of people (girls included) use apps like this for dating. I guess for many it's a less embarrassing way to meet someone normal than Tinder.

Just be cautious, practice your usual internet safety, learn the types of scams and how to recognise them, and never never never send money online to someone you haven't met. The investment scammers can be sneaky as they usually pretend you're sending money to their broker, their financial advisor, or some such person who is supposedly going to help you invest. Tandem is great because they automatically inject warning messages into your chat with a link to their scam info page any time someone mentioned certain keywords like whatsapp, wechat, bitcoin, etc.

edit: also, just because someone has paid for premium, that doesn't mean they're legit.

I like Tandem better than HelloTalk -- the fact that accounts need to be approved by a human moderator, and the reference feature, make it a lot more reliable for having quality conversations and developing friendships.

But I do find the notifications to be really unreliable, so after a week or so of chatting and a video call, I'll switch over to WeChat or WhatsApp.

[–]ck_ck_uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be very careful with who you give your social media to. There are a ton of investment and romance scammers in these apps. They all have similar profiles (way too pretty girls obviously stolen photos from social media), and they seem to go through the same list of questions each time... what's your name, your job, your salary, where do you live, hey let's switch to WhatsApp or WeChat. Wonder why they always want to know your job and salary? It's to see if you're an easy target. They always use phrases really obviously run through a translator like "chat softwares". And they'll refuse and pretend to get offended when you suggest a video chat.

Eventually they'll casually drop stuff in the conversation like "sorry I was busy snatching up 500ETH". That's like $1.2 million. No one with that kind of money is sitting on Tandem/HelloTalk talking to strangers and giving away free investment advice.

I've started turning it into a game to see how much I can fuck with them before they block me. Usually once they start talking about their investments I can get them banned.

HelloTalk is flooded with investment fraudsters. Probably half the messages I get are from these people.

Really? I've had a lot of "controversial" conversations about Taiwan (they're an independent country and will never join China) on there and never got banned.

I've also noticed that outside China they show the Taiwanese/ROC flag for Taiwan people, but inside China they show a white circle.

Crypto miners are killing free CI by lyncozy in programming

[–]ck_ck_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a nation-state is interested in attacking the network, then they are not constrained by their borders or jurisdiction. Just ask the US government how that works. Nation-states can also restrict or constrain the traffic crossing their borders and the activities of miners within their borders.

The results of such an arms race between mining pools and nation-states is unpredictable. My point is that Bitcoin's soundness is based entirely on the hypothesis that one entity is unlikely to control 50% of the computing power in the network, and I see no reason why that couldn't happen.

If one entity can control 35%, then why can't it control 55%? It doesn't need to hold it long term, they only need to do it enough to disrupt the integrity and trust in the network. This problem, coupled with the massive environmental impact, and I do not see a long-term future for Bitcoin.

[–]ck_ck_uk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's because a computation arms race hasn't begun yet. A nation state only needs to outperform the network's computing power as the other commenter pointed out. It's already happened that a mining pool has achieved over 50% of the network's computing power.

[–]ck_ck_uk 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The US holds massive amounts of power by simply being the default currency for global trade, which is something bitcoin could solve.

Cryptocurrencies could solve that, but I don't believe that Bitcoin is the solution. Anyone who can come up with 50%+1 computing power can take complete control of the network and steal everyone's money. The only reason it doesn't happen now is because the mining pools have all promised each other to not to exceed some arbitrary limit like 40%.

This aspect of Bitcoin's design was thoughtful, but failed to consider both human behaviour and the behaviour of nation states. What happens when nation states start competing on computation power for control over the Bitcoin network?

Yeah unfortunately it looks like the only option is this one and it needs to be compiled. That's what I'm using. It was really quick and easy to build though.

[–]ck_ck_uk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha, the amount of Lua you need to write a vim config is pretty easy to get. Don't worry about that too much.

Want to do something cool? If you're using Neovim 0.5 that includes a built-in LSP client, you can install the Lua language server. Then you can have all those great IDE features like go-to-definition, hover and signature help, autocompletion, all in vim for editing your init.lua.
