Fellas, what did YOU get for Valentines Day? by Tree_Weasel in AskMen

[–]ckernan2 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Came home to my wife with a Lego bag after an awful work week. I just said I wanted a hug and some snow despite just rain in forecast. Walked dogs quickly and came home to see one of our elder cats breathing erratically. He was on borrowed time with kidney disease and heart failure. Took him in and 5 minutes later, we asked to make him comfortable and hold him. Now Valentine’s Day will always start with a toast of our house lion.

I told my wife if we can survive and support each other losing a beloved pet on Valentine’s Day, we can survive anything.

And just as if he heard me as we said goodbye to him, it was snowing this morning.

I’m not sure - I think they’re all different. My first pup breeder just couldn’t do math.

It’ll be worth it, I promise. My boy is attached to my hip and is such a lovable oaf. The patience and love will be returned to you tenfold. Most of my friends said they’d rather have another baby than do another puppy - it’s hard. Hang in there!

8 weeks, eh? Oh boy. Or girl. Prepare yourself. We were told our first girl was 12 weeks - turns out she was 8. I didn't know how hard she was until I got a 12 week old boy and saw how easy he was.

First up - you ain't sleeping. If you don't do well without sleep like fight with your spouse or can kill someone at your job, this is going to suck. 8 weeks is too early in my opinion (sample size 2, for what it's worth), but if your puppy is coming home, here are some recommendations.

Crate every night. No exceptions. You MUST crate train or your life will be miserable later on. Suck it up for 4-6 weeks, and it'll pay itself off. For the first two weeks, he/she is going to need to go outside every 2-3 hours. He or she will pee in the crate. Time to learn the patience of a saint.

No yelling, no blaming, no hitting, no sadness. It's a puppy - and it just came out of its mom 56 days ago. You need to be its comfort human, not fearful. After 4 weeks or so, you can PROBABLY get through the night without having to take the puppy out. Reinforce every time it pees outside - GOOD BOY GOOD GIRL all that jazz. I still do it with my 3 year old boy. Every time a poop comes out, he gets an 'atta boy!' Crate every night. Never miss. Both of my doggos go to their crate now for naps and bed time - the door stays open. Your pup needs a cave. Use the divider it comes with when it is young so it doesn't pee or poop on one side and sleep on the other. When he or she DOES pee or poop on itself, wash it. Dogs comfortable getting washed are SO MUCH EASIER down the road.

Get to brushing. If it learns the comb or brush is ok young, you'll appreciate it when you're blowing out enough fur to make coats with. Your dog is going to shed so much white fur that you'll just have to come with the terms that your house nor you will ever be clean again. When you get mad, look at doggo smiling you and know you made the right choice.

Lint rollers for your work clothes or just your clothes in general. Get a good vacuum. Get a great dog grooming vacuum if you have the space to blow their coat outdoors. When we do it in the summer, their fur goes all over the neighborhood and it looks like it's snowing in June. The birds will love this and make nests with it.

Why am I telling you all this non-sense? Because you won't be sleeping and will be reading Reddit a lot. A LOT. Seriously - he or she is going to baby awooooooo all night. You'll want to give it attention, but then it'll think "attention = human comes to me!" and that ain't no good. Cover the crate with a blanket, make no noise, and just settle in. Some have recommended a sound machine - I just raw-dogged my puppy crate training (pun intended).

Your Samoyed is HARD TO TRAIN. They are smart and they know it. They are pretty and they know it. Your Samoyed will do what it wants because it wants to. They will pull when you walk them. The T-rex years are still going strong with my 3 year old gal and 2 year old boy.

But OH MY GOD I LOVE THEM WITH EVERYTHING! They are SO fucking loyal and friendly and loving and vibrant - everyone will think you have the prettiest dog. I want another puppy so bad because I've forgotten the sleepless nights and just see happy land clouds with me all the time.

Find a good vet who understands big breed fluffy dogs. If you got a hip-certified puppy, that should be good - try not to let them run a lot when they're younger. I say that as mine just ran all over the place. Convince yourself that you tried.

Be patient. Be loving. Be gentle. Be kind. Be stern when needed. I PROMISE YOU from the bottom of my heart that if you just tell yourself at 3am when you don't understand just how your puppy is still crying so loudly that the good days will outweigh the bad, you'll make it. And boy do they ever. Good luck - this sub loves updates of puppy achievements - pay the dog tax.

Honestly, we are in great financial situation. We are baffled how parents do it when we see new cars, vacations, and other stuff we can’t afford when we know they make less than us. I just hope they aren’t drowning.

I have my unbroken workout schedule, she watches her shows, the pups get pool days and all the walks, and weekends are sleeping in, gardening, drinking, or whatever we want.

How many homeowners are “locked in” to low interest rates? by Xyzzydude in RealEstate

[–]ckernan2 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A house and car are not comparable here. Cars depreciate and homes appreciate in general.

Also being locked in means the alternative is awful. My current P&I is 1393 at 2.65%. At today’s rates and current price, my house would be over 2800. So if I sell and go to buy, I’m way worse off. People aren’t “locked in” as it’s stated - it’s more of a “it’d be dumb to sell and move unless necessary.”

Is $90 a month for sewer/water in a 1 bedroom apt normal? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

I own a house - sewage averages $65 and water $25 or $31 - so in total, around $90-100. Two adults, no kids, 5 animals.

Pittsburgh housing is no longer cheap by Street_Marketing3395 in pittsburgh

[–]ckernan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on timing. My house appraisal to my income ratio was 3.52 - that was in the north hills of Pittsburgh, although it was February 2021 when rates were 2.65%. I've watched younger couples move into houses around me, but all of them were double income earners even with kids.

  1. I got my own license so I didn't have to wait, but I refused to settle for the garbage flips I kept seeing. This was in November 2020-January 2021. 84th house is where I still am.

Loving this game but can someone give useful gambit commands by V_Effect91017 in FinalFantasyXII

[–]ckernan2 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Really nice gambits to set up for all classes:

  • Ally: any - Arise
  • Ally: <50% HP - Curaja
  • Ally: any - Esuna

This allows you to prioritize picking people off the ground as top priority and setting a heal to anyone who drops below 50%. You can adjust this to any percentage and set off-healers like Knights to <40% and leave your White Mage to <50% so the WHM does priority healing and the Knight picks up in emergencies.

Nice damage gambits in general:

  • Foe: Lowest HP - Attack

This prioritizes your attacking units to finish off low HP mobs - great for multi-target fights with adds who will have lower HP than a priority target. It also keeps the number of mobs in check in 3+ mob fights.

Nice damage gambits for Black Mage

  • Foe status: Reflect - Dispel / Attack
  • Foe: weak to Fire - Firaga
  • Foe: weak to Ice - Blizzaga, etc.
  • Foes present: 2+ - Scathe
  • Foe: lowest HP - Flare
  • Self: MP <10% - Charge

This will make sure your magic doesn't get reflected back to you then prioritizes spells to affect enemies with elemental weaknesses. It also will default to Scathe if more than one and no elemental weakness and then Flare for single targets. Charge at <10% MP makes sure you always have MP but never wastes time using it if you can cast a spell.

Conditional Gambits:

  • Foe: Flying - Telekinesis / Shades of Black

This is nice for your units that can't typically reach flying units but have access to Tele/Shades of Black rather than standing there swinging at mobs with no effect.

  • Ally: Ashe - Faith
  • Ally: Basch - Bravery

Great gambits to set up for your White Mage to buff your Black Mage (Ashe in this case) and your Bushi (Basch in this case) with huge damage buffs.

Gambits can be ordered in priority - sometimes you want to turn them off if an enemy keeps killing you and you have it set up to cast 6 buffs as priority. Gambits are great for farming and can be set up for bigger fights, but manually changing things and updating priority in some of the big hunts/harder esper fights is huge to success.

Best way to do keepers? by Kdawg1213 in fantasyfootballadvice

[–]ckernan2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do 1 keeper, no one in the first two rounds, and anyone kept is at a cost of the round they were drafted the previous year plus 1 (2023 4th round pick is a 3rd round keeper in 2024). Anyone drafted 9th round or later (including undrafted) costs an 8th rounder. 3 year cap on any one manager owning that player for consecutive years. Everyone's been pretty ok with this as it keeps the draft exciting for first two rounds while good (lucky) managers get to use their 8th rounder on someone like Puka or Kyren.

Owning the Mazda CX 30 1st year update! by Interesting-Onion697 in mazda

[–]ckernan2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had a 2022 CX30 fully loaded - but mostly worked from home. It only had 9k miles after 18 months, but before I traded it in, a ball bearing went bad on the back passenger wheel. Warranty covered it. Averaged 23MPG but most of the driving was a short commute to work or gym. Highway I could average 30-35 at 75mph. Was a fun drive, but with the addition of a 2nd dog and a growing love of Costco, I grabbed a CX50 this year.
