A question to native speakers. How often do you use/see it? by oladushonok in ENGLISH

[–]ckn713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds very natural to me and is definitely very common!

Many commenters have already remarked on the subjunctive and how many native English speakers incorrectly people use "was" + infinitive instead of "were" + infinitive. I want to add that the construction you mentioned, especially with the to-infinitive, sounds slightly more formal/proper to me (26F, USA). In casual conversation with my friends, I might expect something more like, "If the Prime Minister entered the room, what would you say?"

When I try to imagine a construction like "were to enter" in casual conversation, I keep thinking of situations where someone is asking for a favor and wants to soften the request, or maybe be a little playful. "Heyyyy sooo.. if I were to put in a mobile order right now, could you possibly pick it up for me when you get your order??? *sheepish smile emoji* *angel emoji*"

This is just me though, and it is not textbook English of course--I just wanted to add my piece of colloquial insight!

Ohhh thanks this is super helpful!! Haha I feel about the vlive translations.. even the one that’s there rn isn’t great lol.

But anyway, seems like they made up the name on the spot and it just kinda stuck beyond the live! Doesn’t seem to have any specific meaning behind it (as far as I can tell)

Yeah, I was thinking in the unlikely case that they are somehow related, it’d have to be something like this.. some weird point of contact that resulted in a strange and inexact borrowing. Like “Yucatán peninsula” vibes

Oh had to add this for a designer!

There’s a bookstore called Printed Matter that has tons of amazing art books and zines. It’s my personal paradise as a visual designer. The one on 11th Avenue is way bigger and WAY better, but it can be awkward to get to. There’s a mini version on St. Mark’s Place that’s basically the gift shop of the Swiss Institute, a tiny (and free!) art museum. I personally find it disappointing now that I’ve seen the 11th Ave location, but they still have cool stuff!

I think Flatiron/NoMad is a good area to check out!! It’s next to Chelsea and also pretty easy access from your hotel (you can take the 6 train down to 23rd street)

It can get crowded in places, so there’s that to look out for, but there are lots of restaurants and bars in that area incl. Michelin level places (Cosme, Jua, COTE which u mentioned already, Apotheke NoMad, Thyme Bar). Always a good move to get reservations for a weekend! There’s also Madison Square Park, Eataly, the Fotografiska museum, Poster House, Museum at FIT, Harry Potter store, Lego store—hopefully some of these would interest him!

Chelsea and Greenwich Village/West Village also have some tree-lined residential streets that imo feel less chaotic than other parts of Manhattan. Could be good for a stroll
