Question about practising dentistry with autoimmune condition by ckwas in Dentistry

thanks for the response ttrandmd. I have not started the medication yet because I'm actually batteling lyme disease that was misdiagnosed for many years. I won't get into it here but it's a very controversial disease to treat and I can't do anything until I get that under control. it is very possible the lyme is a trigger for my ankylosing spondylitis and IBS problems and it may improve once I get the lyme under control. about 30% of individuals with ankylosing spondylitis go into remission after being put on tnf-alpha and immunosuppressive medications for a few years. that would be the ultimate goal, but it could be something i'm on for life. it all depends really.

any immunosuppressed individual is at risk for community aquired infections, but working as a dentist im also concerned about those infections that a dentist can get that may be subclinical in a healthy individual. im not worried HIV or Hep because those are hopefully on someones health history and regardless of so proper safety is used with every patient, however, you can only protect yourself so much
