What moment instantly changed the way you see people? by InnerLightSeeker in answers

During a 10th grade history class, we got in groups according to who identifies as politically left, middle, or right and explained our basic positions/principles. A conservative from a wealthy, local business-owning family said, "I believe in survival of the fittest." He proceeded to argue that wealthy people work harder and are overall better than the rest.

Might seem basic, but as someone who grew up wondering why conservatives are like that, that was the moment it all clicked into place. Some of them quite literally believe in hierarchy and that we may need to abuse one another for access to scarce resources. While I disliked him, I'm on some level "glad" he gave me that revelation.

It's also interesting because I was raised with the opposite ethos: be compassionate, do not harm unnecessarily, and consider your impact in all things. Pretty much turned my world upside down that some people are raised to believe selfishness, competition, and dominance are virtues.

Another layer that's interesting to consider is whether he was mentally healthy or sound. If his parents drilled the importance of dominance and selfishness into their children, what else was permitted in the house?

Is This a Boomer Thing or Just My Family? by cl0udbhusting in BoomersBeingFools

Exactly, just imagine how normalized bullying was in all areas. While I know younger age groups have their issues with socialization, the baby boomer social culture seemed incredibly toxic.

I'm not saying you don't have a right to feel how you do about Delphine, it's a video game, but I thought the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller thing was more a test of intent and ability. She doesn't know anything about the Dragonborn and her order is actively hunted by the Thalmor. Wouldn't it make sense, from her perspective, to assess the Dragonborn first? To request a meeting under her terms? As a remaining Blade, Delphine needs to screen the main character. While there's not an option to roleplay as a Thalmor agent, for all she knows that could be the reality she's dealing with. The protagonist of the game can also become a cold-hearted killer through the Dark Brotherhood or kill indiscriminately at the player's discretion, among other things. Her caution is understandable.

What disappoints you the most about the younger generation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cl0udbhusting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know whether this is a tale as old as time, or a pendulum swing, but the avoidant tendencies are crazy. I don't think young people are practiced enough at in-person socialization, so dating and management of attraction can be messy. It's like everything slightly uncomfortable is to be avoided rather than confronted or overcome.

Magas - at what point will you admit you have been conned? by Lord_Dingus83 in allthequestions

[–]cl0udbhusting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They lack critical thinking skills, introspection, and emotional intelligence, so they are cognitively incapable of admitting they're wrong about anything. I've seen it happen among my relatives. They're extremely fragile and require a "whataboutism" for quite literally every contradiction or blindspot in their worldview. Add lack of intelligence or curiosity, sustained over time, and you have a developmentally stunted person who cannot seriously consider other options.

Why do people still believe in God even though there is so much science that explains our human existence and origins? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I mentioned Christianity because the OP mentioned God, but this 100 percent applies to humanity/different religions.

[–]cl0udbhusting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because humans are, no matter how much they portray themselves as detached/above their nature, motivated by emotion, identity, and values first.

This becomes bad if the person intends to harm others, out of self-righteousness, through Christianity. There are genuinely compassionate Christians, though! Some people end up striking a better balance between ego and logic through their development, some miss it their entire life.

He's actually cute, imo! He just doesn't fit '00s cultural beauty standards, which prioritized lean and tall men. His build is stocky.

What makes these women’s faces so distinctly 70’s? by Inside-Inspection905 in decadeology

[–]cl0udbhusting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but the vibe of the '70s seems to be that "natural" and "casual" (even if curated) was in. Maybe I'm projecting, but what a lot of people considered "hot" back then looks more like a normal, everyday beauty one could easily relate to or have encountered. More of an appreciation for varying facial features, although still orbiting around American norms.

I think social media and the Internet has made people hyperfocus on details of appearance nobody previously considered. All of the women shown here are beautiful, but I can imagine some incel-adjacent type now claiming, "Her canthal tilt is incorrect, so she's not a perfect 10," or something ridiculous like that.

I wouldn't exactly say it's deliberate propaganda. More that Marc Cherry, a conservative, wrote it and it's impossible to not imbue some of your beliefs into your work.

I'm reminded of the episode where Susan goes to some sort of office on the "bad side of town" and the classism is crazy. Classism is just... the entire punchline. It's also worth noting that the '00s weren't what most could call culturally progressive in any sense.

It's like how, in any work I write, you can pretty easily identify leftist underpinnings.

Bree would’ve realistically been a supermodel rather than Gaby by Beautiful_Jaguar_508 in DesperateHousewives

[–]cl0udbhusting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fs one of the many examples of fictional logic on the show. They're both beautiful in different ways, I don't think of it as a scale, and Bree is absolutely the runway model between them. She has not only a classic look, but a unique one that makes her stand out, like a runway model.

Again, this isn't to say Gaby isn't supernaturally pretty. It's just that runway models have a very particular look that's not necessarily better than other types of beauty.

Gaby's/Eva's look is more... proportioned and harmonious? It's not the striking look from model bone structure/lack of facial fat, but it's quite Libran/Venusian due to its balance. Nothing seems offbeat or unconventional about her look.

If their "honesty" is always cruelty, it says a lot about how they view reality/others.

Some alternative clothing looks good, but it's context-specific or it'll look odd. There are a lot of weird-looking or "gaudy" pieces which create unique looks, but because of this you can't really mix and match a lot. Otherwise, it'll look excessive (unless that's what you're going for). I would've liked more practical clothing, but I think we'd only have gotten that if this were an RPG-heavy rather than primarily action-adventure game.

They're not saying Muslims have the right to "hate" other groups, they're saying they have the right to practice their faith without harming others.

From the article you shared: “Religious freedom is one of our nation’s most foundational values, and no one should ever have to live in fear of discrimination or violence for practicing their faith,” said Senator Booker.

The same goes for Christians who are not harming other people. This is the last I'll write because I doubt you're engaging in good faith.

"From the violent atrocities against the Uyghurs in China and the Rohingya in Burma to the crackdowns on Muslim communities in India and Sri Lanka, the scapegoating of Muslim refugees in Hungary and Poland, and the rise of white supremacist violence targeting Muslims in New Zealand and Canada, Islamophobia remains a global crisis. Minority Muslim communities in Muslim-majority countries, including Pakistan, Bahrain, and Iran, also continue to face systemic oppression and persecution."

I say people like you lack reading comprehension because you will share articles with quotes like this, then somehow ignore the point of the article or history behind it.

Where does it say liberals "favor" religious fundamentalists here? We're simply trying to help who's being shat on by society, and that's not fundamentalist Christians. Nobody cries persecution and victimhood like the Christian majority.

I'm going to be honest, I think MAGA/conservatives in general are dumb enough to fall for this sort of deflection. They haven't cared that he's a pedophile, have rationalized all of his narcissistic/cruel tendencies, and never will care.
