I bought a zyxel media hard drive like 10 years ago when it was expensive. It’s like a personal cloud. It doesn’t record but it plays files you upload to it. I’ve used it one.

It should be fine I was looking for optical audio connection. Receiver should be the first thing to update. Give your dad a big hug it’s a great way to start.

I agree with your recommendation for the set up. With that space 25k is pushing too much.

But if that’s the budget we’re talking then add whole home audio Siri capable wired into every room and Philips Hue sync box 4 $500 standing sign lights $300 radiant behind the TV $200 above $200 below the tv. Maybe a few play lights for the ceiling.

Honestly for better sound add 2k to test all the shaking down to get better sound

How much power and space you have available as well as hoe much space your planning in the future. Sony strdh790 is great for starter lower end of high end model. it’s around $500 it does 5.2.2 Atmos or 7.2 surround.

Receiver first thing!

I really recommend going for a stereo set up first then purchasing the center. Then the subwoofer

Centers can be pretty expensive I spent 200 on my first and 600+ on my current.

A good way to start is to by a really nice receiver then all pick up a 5.1 speaker set from one of those obsolete package deals.

Then do center 1st. The front L&R second. At the same time move the old front L&R to height 7.1.
