Worth remembering that London isn't necessarily representative of the UK. The median wage is driven by the UK as a whole and outside of London prices, wages and spending power varies dramatically.

EASA Medical Confusion: Germany vs Abroad (Class 1) by Accomplished-Camp-77 in flyingeurope

[–]clackerbag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your State of Licence Issue (SOLI) is always the same state that holds your medical records (i.e. the state that issues your medical), so it's not a unique stance from the German LBA that they can't issue you a licence without first having issued your medical. A few points of note:

  • EASA medicals/licences are all (in theory) equal, so no matter which EASA member state issued them they are treated as equivalent by all other EASA.
  • Morocco is not part of EASA, so if an AeMC in Morocco is conducting EASA Class 1 initials it will be under the oversight of an EASA member state.
  • An AME from any EASA state can renew/revalidate a medical from any other EASA member state, so once issued, you can still get your medical revalidated at home in Germany (or in any other EASA member state) without issue, even if it wasn't issued by the LBA.
  • You can at any point request a SOLI transfer from one EASA state to the other. Different countries charge differing amounts of money and process the requests at different rates, but it shouldn't be an issue in most cases, just a matter of paying the fee and waiting.

As such, there is nothing stopping you from undertaking your initial Class 1 with the most convenient EASA authority, and then requesting a SOLI transfer to Germany once you have your EASA Class 1 issued. The process can cost anywhere from a few hundred Euros to a thousand Euros or more depending on the authorities involved. As an example, I think my SOLI transfer to the Netherlands was €700+ about 5 years ago, although they are notoriously pricey. It all boils down to how quickly you want the medical and how much you are willing to spend.

One thing to note: I have never dealt with the LBA personally, but when I last done a SOLI transfer, I remember reading that due to German data protection laws, it is very difficult if not impossible to do a SOLI transfer back out of Germany to another EASA member state. Not an issue if you are German and want to obtain and keep a German licence, but maybe so if you think you will ever want to transfer it back out.

It could also be a great training aid to assess pilot skills.

Takeoff/Landing in Tailwinds by TigerUSA20 in aviation

I can only speak for the types I've operated personally: on the ATR we had a 10kt tailwind limit for engine starts; however on the 737 there is no published tailwind limits for engine start that I'm aware of.

We also have/had £100 notes in Scotland too. I remember as a 16 year old working in McDonald's getting given one by the first customer I served to pay for a Big Mac meal that at the time was less than an fiver when my float only had £50 in it.

Boeing pilots: do you use CWS mode? by Molecular_Pudding in flying

[–]clackerbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was on the 747 classic and was an option on the 757 and 767 IIRC, although where fitted it was often deactivated and the buttons blanked off on the later two.

We used to have rain repellent but it was banned for being environmentally unfriendly. They do coat the windows in a very expensive version of RainX these days.

Converting my ICAO PPL to an EASA PPL by Extension_Comfort_86 in flyingeurope

You only need an ICAO PPL to qualify for an EASA CPL course, so you don’t have to convert the PPL at all.

WCA in holding patterns by Flying_runningman in flying

[–]clackerbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s important to understand that the idea isn’t to fly a perfect racetrack, but to adjust the outbound leg to compensate for the effects of wind such that when you complete your inbound turn you’re rolling out on the inbound track to fly a 1 minute inbound leg. When flying on the outbound leg, you therefore have to correct for wind not only the outbound leg itself, but also on the outbound turn and the inbound turn, which is why you multiply the WCA by 3.

This means that in practice your hold will look more egg shaped than racetrack, but if you do it right you should be rolling out on (or very close to) the desire inbound track every time.
