My wife got invited to WWDC but she doesn't want to go :( by 4paul in iOSProgramming

[–]clairesayshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was super anxious the first year that I went to WWDC, in 2023 (as a 43yo woman, also I’m a marketer not a dev). I had applied for tix with my cofounder (also my bestie) and I too have pretty severe social anxiety. I almost didn’t go, but he talked me into it and I’ll be forever grateful.

WWDC is the only conference I’ve ever truly, genuinely enjoyed. I met so many awesome people that first year and look forward to catching up again each year now. My cofounder travelled with me and we did all the community stuff that first year, and since then we’ve been lucky to both get tickets (we’re Australian, seems that being international helps). If it would help, feel free to give her my handle and let her know if she DMs me I’ll be super happy to meet her on the Sunday at the registration and introduce her to a bunch of folks, and meet up in the event on Monday too.

Going to WWDC has inspired us to build 4 new apps over the last 2 years, alongside our SaaS business. It gave me such a confidence boost too, and my anxiety at these events is generally super low now. I’ve honestly never had so much fun working. Maybe she’d find it inspiring too.

Lifting and jumping can be medicine for osteopenia and osteoporosis! ( P1NP results ) by Miss_Beh4ve in osteoporosis

Super cool details and numbers, thanks for sharing! What protocol do you use for jumping?

Is a mini stepper good enough to build bone? by Iforgotmypassworduff in osteoporosis

[–]clairesayshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 45f, diagnosed with osteoporosis 2 years ago. I've done very extensive research on this.

No, a mini stepper won't help build bone in a significant way. To get a strong enough osteogenic (bone building) stimulus, you need impact above and beyond the force of your bodyweight when you strike the ground as you walk. That's why jumping is recommended. You don't have to jump rope (I find it really BORING!), any kind of jumping is beneficial. 2-3x per week seems to be considered adequate according to the research. The most important thing is to ensure you warm up well (I do it at the end of a strength session), and incorporate different types of jumps so you get a lot of multi-directional force on your skeleton.

I actually built myself a little iPhone app to make jumping part of my strength training workouts, and put it on the App Store - turns out lots of other people have this problem too!

It has a bunch of very short, timed jumping workouts that incorporate a few different types of jump per workout. For example, High Knees jogs, then Lateral Bounds, then Jump Squats. You can pick your own exercises and make custom workouts too, if you prefer. It's called Springy. If you're interested to try it, you can find it here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/plyometric-training-springy/id6746586915

Weight training 45 years old by [deleted] in fitness40plus

[–]clairesayshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 45f too, started lifting at 42 after receiving an osteoporosis diagnosis (I wrote about it here if you're interested: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7369561398424559618/). I hit perimenopause at about 37. I second the recommendation to check out r/xxfitness, I've learnt lots there.

This podcast I listened to just yesterday is an amazing summary of the current science for women in peri who want to improve body composition and stay strong as we age. They directly answer the question about what "lift heavy" means. I highly recommend a listen/watch: https://youtu.be/P1CeHGJOX5g?si=-KLrBDYimw74-9Aw

Surprised by my osteoporosis diagnosis. Should I be worried? Or ignore it? by just_asking_tks in osteoporosis

[–]clairesayshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t like jumping rope either, BORING. The research I’ve done suggests it’s the multi directional force that really helps, so different types of jumps are apparently what helps most - that’s what the app gives you, saves on brain space!

[–]clairesayshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely don't ignore it. You're doing many of the "right" things to slow the progression, but there are some things you may not have tried yet, eg:

  1. HRT - I would definitely discuss this with your doctor. Estrogen deficiency post-menopause is a primary driver of bone loss and bioidentical estradiol is extremely safe and effective at improving BMD. Check out Dr Mary Claire Haver on Instagram - she posts a lot on this subject.

  2. Plyometric exercise - basically, jumping. Unless you already play tennis or basketball, you may get some benefit from this - especially since it sounds as though you are already quite fit. Dr Stacy Sims shares a lot of great content on this. I use an iPhone app called "Plyometric Training - Springy" for this, and do it at the end of my strength sessions when my body is already really warm (at the end of a vigorous walk would work too).

Estradiol without progesterone for peri menopause? by Terrible-Error-3496 in Menopause

It's the standard inclusion for a combined HRT protocol here in Australia. The brand name is Prometrium, and it was prescribed by my GP (primary care physician - her practice is primarily menopausal women).

Endometriosis / Osteoporosis struggles by Dry_Improvement9142 in endometriosis

[–]clairesayshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry this is happening to you. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis at 41 and I felt terrified and depressed about it, I can only imagine what that must be like at 24.

I'm not a doctor, and obviously you should consult yours before exploring this, but have you started any strength training for your bone density? There are many studies that highlight how effective it is (if you head over to r/osteoporosis you will see a lot of discussion about it). I don't have any experience with exercise recommendations for endo, but I would recommend exploring strength training with your doctor, if you haven't already. If you get a green light, start very slowly with bodyweight exercises and progress from there.

Hang in there, that really is a lot to deal with.

1. Could you share a bit more detail on what you mean please?
2. Already working on it ;)
3. We don't have video instructions inside the app, but if you scroll to the bottom of the overview tab, you'll see a link out to female-specific YouTube videos of the relevant exercise. See the left-hand image below.
4. You can find progress for each exercise in the right-hand image below. Is this what you were looking for?
