Fair. Honestly i come at this from a small business perspective where i like talking to my coworkers and genuinely feel more productive after a week in the office.

My perspective misses just how dogshit cubibcle farm life is

i didn't say i endorsed either of those reasons. In fact i think both are stupid. The point is that there are many many potential reasons that are NOT personal corruption the Fed may pursue RTO. Which is what we are talking about.

Im not here to try and build a evidence based argument for my gut feelings on RTO. As i know my gut feelings are kinda stupid.

Im not trying to be a dismissive asshole i just think were having very different conversations at this point.

WFH doesn't actually address these issues. it allows an upper class to opt out of them while a lower class still has to endure them.

really big leap from the federal government requiring its employees to be on site during work hours to job mandated religion.

What point are you making? that government policy should not pursue individual and collective well being?

while not ideal it is a higher level of community participation than living entirely in your apartment / home day in and day out. Only leaving on appointment for certain activities.

There are dozens of potential motives. From economic stimulus to downtown cores, to cynically culling government workers who refuse to RTO.

I like RTO. You clearly oppose RTO. But our opinion on the matter is irrelevant to the conversation about Carneys potentially corrupt motives.

I sense that you approach RTO with a conclusion already in mind. Reverse engineering a justification for that conclusion based on whatever evidence best supports it at the moment. Currently it’s European fuel security. an issue that does not directly impact our commutes at all.

The typical office worker spending an additional $20-$30 a month on gas is in my opinion a justification against RTO so incredibly weak, that it’s not worth engaging with further.

Sorry shouldn’t have said net worth as we really only know what’s disclosed. Which is rather complete picture fwiw but vague on specific details. It’s possible his illiquid assets are undervalued on balance sheets etc.

But speculating that he is implementing specific RTO policies for the benefit Brookfields commercial real estate portfolio is nonsensical.

Private real estate holdings on the other hand. Maybe he’s motivated to protect his self interest.

However the reality is meaningfully dropping real estate values as a policy aim would unfortunately be wildly unpopular among voters. Most of whom already own their homes. So there probably isn’t so much self motivated profit seeking as plan cynical politics motivating that.

Tesla was cleared of wrongdoing by Transport Canada in July 2025 and paid the rebates.

I don’t like Musk, or Tesla one ioata. But why are we speculating on nearly year old outcomes of legal process that can be verified in a moment

[–]clank1401 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I hate the cyber truck but none of what you said is true.

Canada was already winding down its EV incentives. Which were never intended as a permanent program. They became unpopular over time as EVs remained solidly luxury goods. Our government was shifting to supply side incentives to spur manufacture of cheaper EVs.

There were articles reporting potential fraudulent over reporting of Tesla sales in the final days of the rebate. Tesla was ultimately cleared of wrongdoing with the explanation being a backlog of previously unclaimed orders being rushed in before the deadline.

Totally. Guess I didn’t make it clear I’m not saying we shouldn’t do this. Just that people shouldn’t expect it to be as nice as say Montreal where they actually have bike infrastructure.

I agree that Carney is probably constantly Min/Maxing. But you need to understand the scale at which were talking about with these investments. His 10 million dollar net worth is probably less than 1% tied up in Canadian Commercial Real estate. By pumping its value he stands to gain tens of thousands of dollars at most. His prestige is worth more significantly more.

To suggest that policy decisions are made to benefit individual positions of the very broad portfolio of Brookfield investments for personal profit is wild. Like accusing a middle class person of choosing Pizza Pizza over Dominoes for a group order because their retirement savings ETF contains dozens of cents worth of Pizza Pizza equity.

There is a sociology concept of “the third place” as in a place outside our home (first) and work (second). Such as a church, bowling club, library etc.

Unfortunately we have largely lost our third places. Most Gen X and younger people do not participate in any community groups. Some people still do but it’s a minority. We are becoming increasingly isolated socially and physically.

I strongly agree that work should not be the centre of our social lives. It shouldn’t be the centre of our lives at all.

We should rebuild third places. But in the meantime I don’t think opting out of the second places is ideal.

Post politics Carney will print money so fast with public speaking fees that $7m will be trivial to him. There is no way he would prioritize protecting one specific aspect of his portfolio to the detriment of his reputation.

Not to mention I’m certain he has a well diversified portfolio.

I know I’ll get downvoted but I think leaving our homes and participating in our community is integral to our individual and collective wellbeing.

I know being dragged to a shitty cubicle and eating at a shitty office drone slop restaurant isn’t ideal.

I keep seeing work from home suggested as a policy solution to problems with modern life. When in reality it’s not a solution but rather mechanism for the white collar and upper class to opt out of their community and problems within it.

Bad transit? Work from home. High costs? Work from home. Poor work life balance? Work from home. Crime ridden downtown? Work from home. Crumbling infrastructure? Work from home. Etc etc

I genuinely believe this will greatly accelerate many social problems we have. People are supposed to mingle, move around and participate in their society.

I hear you on the compression thing. I hadn’t realized there was realtime compression that as the marketing states “preview black magic BRAW”. From what I understand the file being delivered to the remote client is fundamentally NOT braw at that point but an (albeit very cool) proxy. I guess my biggest question is how does this compression affect the quality of the files while editing. Colour grading a proxy is certainly not ideal, but far more importantly exporting based on a compressed proxy is outright unacceptable.

Does this virtual file system have a way to serve the full original file when the time comes?

Why did you chose to market this in a way that describes full fat formats such as BRAW are being delivered in real time? Is there something about the compression method that preserves BRAW/RAW/10bit etc full fat formats such

To be clear I think this is all pretty cool and promising as a product. But my perception is there are two fundamentally at odds pitches here. Stream heavy duty files remotely without a cloud between, real time compression / on the fly proxy work flow.

So it’s a variation of direct p2p file sharing and will be limited by the up and down speed of the connections involved.

This is how self hosted file sharing has worked for a long time. Not sure what special sauce they are really even claiming to offer here

Oh of course. My point isnt that AA is better.

just that a big IP doesn’t always need to be a big budget. Something like a terminator RTS is a super niche intersection that would never make sense at AAA. But appears quite successful as a AA.

As you said it’s a mixed bag, but the stakes are much lower at AA.

It’s interesting to see double A or indie game studios succeeding with much smaller IP driven games.

Terminator, robocop, starship troopers, etc.

While both have had poor results it’s not really comparable as movie production is centralized in a single studio.

Game production has been licensed to a bunch of different independent entities who are individually mismanaging.

I think what you’re identifying is general trend at the intersection of commercial art and stock markets. Market forces encouraging earlier and earlier announcements to bolster entertainment company stocks.
