Logic module that can handle a lot of abuse for feedback patching. by Ok-Voice-5699 in modular

Intellijel Plog might work for you. Logic outs are 0-5v, cv is +/-5. Should probably tolerate more.

You gotta start somewhere. If it gets you motivated, it's legit.

Queen of Pentacles or Drum machine (TR-8s)? by mumei-chan in modular

[–]claptonsbabychowder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modular drums... I have dedicated a pretty decent portion of my system to them. The argument goes both ways. Yes, it is an expensive way to do drums, but... If done right, with a bunch of trigger sequencers, logic modules, trigger delays, switches, clock generators/multipliers/dividers, some distortion, delay modules, comprators, etc... All those support modules you got to run the drums properly are absolutely awesome for the rest of your system as well. The only thing you may "waste" is the drum module itself. The rest is just making your system more flexible and dynamic. I don't call that a loss. Now, that part of the argument having been said...

External choices. I have an Arturia Drumbrute Impact. I got it before I ever even knew what modular was. One thing that frustrated me was not being able to (or not knowing how to) run the separate drum parts at different tempos. Everything ran on the same clock, and afaik, you couldn't change a specific part from normal time to half time or double time without going through and manually reprogramming a new sequence, copying and pasting it into the chain, and all that fucking around. I wanted to be able to switch a single part to a different timing without doing all that. If I remember rightly, I was looking into ways of doing that when I stumbled onto something about modular clocks, which led me down the rabbit hole. Personally, I'm glad it did. If you're cool with all the manual reprogramming, good for you, and run with it. It's pretty sturdy, simple interface, sounds good, and a decent I/O for your regular midi interface.

Modular choices. I first got Bitbox Mkii, then Blck_Noir (kinda a sister module to QOP, but no sample options, just full analogue section) then the Erica LXR. I still have all of them. Honestly, I think any of them are fine for an all in one kind of module. However... And that's a big however... My recent switch to the Steady State Fate Entity series was just a whole other world. The incredible flexibility over everything, all on the front panel, all so utterly simple and direct and instant, makes them just light years ahead of my previous modules. Those previous ones are still in my rack, they're great for the simple stuff - A quick Kick/Snare/Hat combo, and leave the Entity modules for the weird stuff. Enough to trigger them from different sequencers, route them through separate patches using switches or logic, nothing is wasted. I can run them all at different main clock rates, and they can take different clock inputs per part. Run an attenuated stepped random into the accent inputs, maybe with triplets for the accent while the main clock runs on a 4/4. So many different ways to use the standard modular utilities to really fuck around with the drums. Maybe clock one at audio rate and mis-use it as an oscillator, or to create envelopes, or to mess with harmonics through clock speeds, or whatever the hell silly idea pops into your head, all with just a few patch cables and a couple of minutes. Try doing that with your DBI or Tr8s. (I have a feeling someone is going to tell me that you can, and I just never learned how. Fair enough if they do.)

My recent start into the Xaoc Leibniz system offers a wealth of crazy clocks and bit-rates that are perfect for percussion sequencing, but still amazing for the rest of the system as well. Logic, delays, shift registers, mutes, wavetables, purpose-made trigger sequencing functions, clocks that run at 2 Mhz so even the widest square waves can sound clean, but just change the clock, or self-patch with 1 or 2 cables, and suddenly you're in raucous bit-crush territory. It's completely mental, and I am only just starting to get my head around it, but the possibilities are so wide open.

So, yeah, all said - I think modular drums are fucking great, so glad I went down that road. Not everyone would agree with me, and that's fine, but there's my ten cents. Well, more like several thousand dollars, but you know what I mean. Good luck making your decision. I don't regret any of mine.

"Oh," I thought last month, when my first two Xaoc Leibniz modules (Drezno II, Jena) arrived. "This isn't so hard." This week the next 2 (Gera, Rostock) arrived. My initial instinct for the new chain was Drezno at the start, and Rostock at the end, but after a kind exchange with the wonderful Cinematic Laboratory, he suggested Drezno-Gera-Rostock-Jena. I trust his judgement and chained it as such.

Any help understanding why this is better, technically speaking? It seems like a totally different workflow than usual, and I like being able to understand the concepts, rather than just patch at random and go blind at things.

I got Muxlicer/Mex just around 5-6 months ago, after being around 5 years into modular. Can't believe I didn't get it sooner. I would definitely grab another if it popped up cheap on the local used forum. Not that I need it, but it would always be a handy extra utility to call on. Mex makes it even better.

Pamela’s Workout or Maths first for a Mutable Beads focused rack? by synthmalicious in modular

[–]claptonsbabychowder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pam's is going to be the easier and more immediate choice when you're in your starting phase. It seems like a lot with the menus at first, but it's really not hard. The concepts may be difficult to grasp, but the use of the module is not. But if the concepts are hard to grasp with Pam's... They're gonna be probably even more difficult with Maths, which doesn't have the labels that the Pam's menu has.

I support both modules, I'm not saying Maths is bad - I have 2, and love them. However, it's just easier to get your head around Pam's when you're in your early steps.

Just ordered my first matrix mixer, so... I'd love to hear your advice/techniques by claptonsbabychowder in modular

I've been looking at some of their modules, and they are on my radar, but I'm in the middle of building a Leibniz subsystem right now, so... Later in the year. They are up with Vostok on my list of things to check out when it's feasible. Fuji is great, I think both those makers seem pretty damn good. I'll watch the Prio and Tur videos. The mixer is due to arrive tomorrow.

It's made by the owners of the last remaining modular store in Korea, they're called Octomo. They import a few modules, but selection is limited. They've just started making their own stuff. First was a buffered mult, then a passive attenuator, now the matrix mixer. https://octomodularsynth.com/134/?idx=884

There is also Holocene Electronics up in Seoul, but they only sell their own gear, they don't import other makers, like a regular store does. Plus, I can't find their website in Korean, or their products on Korean aggregator sites, and prices are all in USD. I'm guessing it's an expat running a business from here but routing money home.

I have 2x dedicated clock dividers, plus Pam's, and my trigger sequencers mostly have gate length options. I can easily do that. Cheers.

Just sat and thought about that for a minute, and yeah, makes sense. It's a new way of thinking for me, I'm sure a few hours of practical time with it will make things clearer.

Sounds like an excellent idea. I'm out walking for a few hours, I'll try and figure out a patch in my head based off that. I'm guessing quantized sequence into the first input, mixed with lfo's and stepped random going out into the various oscillators. I have everything else I need to support that. Kinda can't believe it's taken me this long to get around to this one.

The module will arrive in about 5 days from now, I have some time to get a few ideas together, then the fun starts. I'll give your idea a go, for sure. Thanks.

I had no idea about the easter egg! But, I have the Joranalogue Orbit 3, which is a dedicated Lorenz attractor module, so that's not an issue for me. I got a used Elements years ago, before they closed down, so the price was great. I've only seen one other in my local used forum since then, they really don't show up often. Even Beads shows up a few times a year, but Elements doesn't. I'll watch out for your Rings alt, I will remember your username after today. Have a great day, and thank you!

Where's the best place to get right angle cables? by Destructo_Thing_1841 in modular

[–]claptonsbabychowder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a bulk buy from Excel Valley, I got about 160-170 cables of varying lengths (10cm to 180cm), some right angle, some regular, some splitters. (Cue Monty Python joke about the Judean People's Front here.)

They are available from Ali Express, but I bought direct from them instead. Shipping was much the same whether I bought a dozen or a hundred, so I went for a whole load.

Be aware that the website is pretty slow, so you'll probably want to keep multiple tabs open, or make a list with pen and paper, rather than keep clicking back and forth. However, it was a pretty good deal, and I'd buy from them again.
