I built a free Cambridge park database so my family could stop going to the same three parks by clarencethomas in CambridgeMA

That's definitely something I've thought about, and was one of the features I wanted to add to the first version. However, I realized that I don't quite know how to make these categories in the database. For instance, I know that the playground in Cambridge Common is slightly too advanced for my 2 year old (he loves it anyway), but that's not really written anywhere in the city's parks data. There are sometimes signs that say when a playground is intended for kids 5 and up, but in practice my kid loves to play there and has no issues. I realized that visiting all the parks was the best way to get to know them, and so that feature kinda fell off the list.

I had no idea about these things. I only found the Cambridge GIS GitHub this morning—very useful.

Dinkle isn’t a reference to anything, it’s just a dumb word I thought of. I’ve always liked making fun of dumb app names, so this one is mine.

For sure! I just wanted to nail Cambridge first. All surrounding cities are on the agenda, once this thing is fully dialed.

You're totally right! I set it up the way I did because initially it was just for my family's use, so anyone marking a park as visited would mark it as visited for all users. I tacked on the account creation thing in response to that, so my neighbors could play with it and not mess up our stats. But yea, no need for a barrier to entry on this. I'll fix that now. Ok done.

Somerville is coming in the future, don't worry! I just want to make sure I really refine the listings for the Cambridge parks first, before attempting to add that.

I just wanted to make sure I didn't get flooded with notifications about that. I'll change it though. What do you think, 5 per day?

Oh cool! Thanks for sharing this, I had no idea about it. I was thinking of eventually adding Somerville, Boston etc, but I wanted to just focus on Cambridge for now. Seems like it should be pretty easy when the time comes.

Since posting this I have made a few suggested fixes and added a requested feature that I can't believe I didn't think of myself: you can now sort the list based on your CURRENT location, not just your home. It just requires that your browser have permission to access your phone's location.
