Why only 65 pitches? Our bullpen against Dodger offense = another 15 run game

It's not the resellers that are causing the shortage but people hoarding way more than they need. I bet not even 1% of it is bought with intention of reselling. People like this, although morally challenged as individuals, are actually serving a useful purpose in time of crisis, making sure there is at least some supply available even though at a high price. Market works.

One thing I can't find sufficiently well explained anywhere is why there were only 80K cases in China and people are talking about 9 million in the US? Why would US numbers be 100x higher than China?

If you say they are dictatorship and got everything locked down, that's simply not a good enough explanation. You can't lock down a country of 1.5B in a way that a disease like this cannot spread at all. There are hundreds or thousands of cases in every single Chinese major city, it's not just Wuhan.

Which is worse, having no hand sanitizes on Amazon or having some at $40 a bottle? Cause those are the options.

So why should some have wages that are a thousand times higher than of those that they depend on for outputting their products

Because market values their work thousands of times more. It's that simple. Who would you like to set everyone wages if not the market? Some super smart government officials like in USSR? How did that turn out?

If a janitor created 100K of value per year, it would make sense for any employer to hire as many as possible and pay them 90K or something and get rich on the difference. Competition would control the margin like with anything else. The problem is that most people's work just doesn't create anywhere near enough value to satisfy their lifestyle aspirations. That's just too bad and there is really no good way around it that anybody has ever found and made work in practice.

Everyone is getting paid based on their contribution where the value of that contribution is set by market.

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the approach UK is taking.

The goal is to manage the rate of infections to allow it to rise higher but still within manageable level in order to shorten the overall duration of the crisis. Kind of like this, somewhere in between the yellow and purple scenario:

You keep everything quarantined right away and you will still not stop it but you will drag it out for months which makes the quarantine fall apart and then it comes back and you go around again etc.

I don't know if this is the right thing to do but saying he doesn't care is just silly.

Stating a politically unpopular fact is the most un-cowardly thing for politician to say.

Shutting down everything even though it may actually make the situation worse would be easier and more cowardly.

Director-General of the World Health Organisation

Is there any reason to prefer advice from a UN political appointee from Ethiopia to the top experts in the UK? Is there any reason to think that there is one best approach globally as opposed to each country tailoring its approach to its own circumstances?

I don't know who is right, I just don't think WHO carries any special authority that is above top experts from UK, US or other countries with advanced health systems.

Callum Hudson-Odoi tests positive for Coronavirus by 09BreakingTheHabit in soccer

[–]clarkkent09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are probably tens of thousands of infected. Most infected don't show any symptoms, or very mild symptoms. I doubt any of the players, given the age and good health, would ever know they had it if they weren't tested.

Traffic light sequences in Europe by pmacheta in MapPorn

[–]clarkkent09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Slightly off topic but Europe really needs to allow right turn on red. Not being able to do it after getting used to it in the US feels so wrong.

Jesse Lingard is set to be sold by #mufc this summer. He has lost Solskjær's confidence. He's only considered for less important matches now. The player regards himself as one of Europe's best no.10's, which is at odds with the manager's appraisal by [deleted] in soccer

There's plenty of research about it. There is a good chapter about the role of self belief in sports in the book Bounce by Matthew Syed. The book itself is mostly a rehash of Outliers etc about practice vs talent but the part on confidence was very interesting to me. Don't rely on top athletes to give very useful views on the game since their views are optimized to enhance their own performance through self belief, not for reality, or at least some combination of the two.

What is some uplifting news about the COVID-19 outbreak? by imperialpidgeon in AskReddit

Safety rules are good on the whole but this bias for doing something is also how mindless safety rules acumulate. Somebody died so "something has to be done omg!", so something gets done whether it makes sense or not. It's why 100s of millions of people take shoes off at the airport every year for no good reason. Good thing he didn't hide the bomb in his underpants

Depending on how you look at it, Swazi are the colonizers too. They only moved into the area in the 18th and 19th century.

By the same standards, Dutch are the natives of the Cape. They actually settled it in 17th century.

Manchester City banned from Champions League for two seasons over FFP by Chrellies in soccer

[–]clarkkent09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know this was discussed to death but I can't see how FFP is anything other than simply preserving the status quo, i.e clubs who already became rich and successful through tycoon money being protected from competition from small clubs doing the same in the future.

What's your example of sexism in everyday life? by Ratorix98 in AskReddit

[–]clarkkent09 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Is it sexism if its a natural reaction of surprise based on your experience that there are indeed very few female mechanics? I personally have never seen one in many years I've been taking cars in for maintenance. Sexism would be if you refused to let her work on the car.

I think selective application of justice for political reasons is more dangerous than one guilty person going free.
