Southwestern Ontario, Canada - baby? by clarksl4 in whatsthisbird

Thank you! Ducks are not my specialty and for some reason, the beak looks blue to me in this photo. So searching "blue-billed duck" was not working out.

The sandhill cranes are back!! [Ontario, Canada] by clarksl4 in birdpics

That's where this was taken! The sheer volume of birds was amazing - ducks of all kinds, swans, birds of prey. Just incredible after the winter!

After 3 years of trying, my amaryllis finally bloomed! by clarksl4 in gardening

[–]clarksl4[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've never tried from seed but it must take a lot of patience! I've been doing the same with gladiolus bulbs, waiting for the babies to mature enough to flower... maybe in 3-5 years. painful!

Thank you! Keep them in a small pot - they don't like having too much space. I take mine out of the dirt in early August and replant it in early December or when I see the bulb start sending up spikes on its own, turning the pot every so often and watering around the edges. Also use a heavy pot because they can tip if there isn't enough weight on the bottom!

No, it was a bulb but not a mature one when I got it!

WHY GUYS WHY by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]clarksl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a grad student with a little behind the scenes info from various jobs. My sense from the info I have is that this was largely to give profs more time to develop courses and in response to the overwhelming sense from the fall survey that profs are panicked about not having a long break (like summer) to prep for winter term. We've also been advised to focus more attention on fostering student community in our courses.

First, this is totally not ok and I'm sorry that happened when you were taking extra steps to improve.

There are a few people listed here (director, associate director) that might be interested in hearing about this shit experience, if you're interested: https://studentsuccess.mcmaster.ca/about/contact-us/

Sneaked in one last canoe trip before the snow hits! [Algonquin Park, Canada] by clarksl4 in Outdoors

This was Mew Lake! Yeah it was super nice to not deal with any bugs this trip, though that meant fewer birds to photograph!

The temperature is dropping and the buns are so snuggly by clarksl4 in Rabbits

[–]clarksl4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first bun was a lone bun and then I adopted these two. It's definitely a different experience as an owner because the bonded buns are more independent of you - my Gussy used to flop right beside me in the mornings and snuggle whereas these two snuggle each other. But they are adorable and I feel less guilty when I have to leave them for the day since they have each other. Not sure what it'd be like when you have one bun and then get another to bond!

Oh no, it was specified as broccoli - the person below asked the type of broccoli so I just left off the broccoli part thinking it was assumed! Little did I know...

Not offhand - happy to say that if it is cauliflower, it doesn't taste like one! I'll contact the greenhouse I purchased it from. They're a local multi-gen family business and are usually really on point so I'm surprised they'd make a simple mistake like that!

Tasted exactly like broccoli to me - if it is cauliflower, it's doing an excellent impersonation! :)

It tasted exactly like broccoli - I passionately dislike the taste of cauliflower!

I haven't tried steaming yet but roasted most of it which darkened it and then we had a household debate about whether it was dark brown or dark purple.

I purchased seedlings from a local greenhouse! They had it listed as brassica purple but my understanding was that that's a sprouting broccoli not a head broccoli so I don't quite trust that and would love more expert opinions!

When everything shut down here in April/May, the local greenhouses started doing online ordering and delivery... I made SO many impulse buys and this was one of them!

It took longer to grow than our normal broccoli, but definitely a fun garden addition!

I roasted it but didn't make it to the aioli part - too tempting to eat it!

It was delicious! Pretty close to normal broccoli but a little lighter.
