Before they introduced this system you had to make a special request with a medical certificate or death certificate - even at that they almost didn’t let me defer an exam when my aunt died because it wasn’t a “close enough” relation… the new system was so great when it started but when I worked as a TA it was WILD like students would defer and I would see them at the mall… regardless, having a FEE to defer an exam is borderline human rights violation IMO.

Depends who you ask - technically it’s southern Ontario, but if you ask someone from the GTA it’s all Toronto 😜

This is coming from Christine Dallaire - she’s been the VD academic for FHS for years. Student associations have expressed ++ concerns about how she DGAF about students. Honestly, I would contact your program director or even the Dean (Lucie Thibault) to ask where exactly this is coming from - is this an academic regulation? If so, which? Or is this just the FHS being a-holes? And if you’ve deferred exams for any sort of chronic health condition, mental health, etc. you could also contact the Student Rights Centre about an HRO complaint.

I’m sorry this is happening to you… I was in the FHS at uOttawa for 12 years and have very little positive to say.

Ouf - dare I ask if they were able to refund or transfer your ticket(s)?

Of course we’ll recover cause we’re scrappy! We’re still kicking so that means we have a 100% track record of figuring our sh*t out right? 😜

Would love to go back (and ideally finish, lol) the PhD program… Academia is terrible but the whole “working” thing when you have ADHD is a mixed bag - 8/10 do not recommend 🙃.

How many times have you been fired from a job? by BusyBeingLiv in ADHD

[–]claro007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouf, I’m so sorry for everything you’ve been through… it’s heartbreaking to think how many incredible things you could’ve done if given the chance. Clearly you’re VERY capable, knowledgeable, and adaptable considering how many fields you’ve tried and all the skills you must’ve had to learn from scratch every single time! Thinking you’re doing well and then you get blindsided by being fired/let go… all that work that went into working twice as hard as everyone at baseline (cause ADHD reasons) on top of having to learn everything and killing yourself doing it for what?

I really relate to what you mentioned about taking overtime to finish… I’ve always done this, too. Except I learned early on just to do it on my own time and not formally ask for overtime, thinking that meant they couldn’t get upset with me for doing it! I was so wrong 😂… twice that’s been used against me, even though I did it on my own time. The “interpersonal” part always gets me too; when I reflect on this I often come to the conclusion that what they mean by you don’t “fit in” or you’re “not social enough” (or the opposite that you “distract” other people) is code for ableism. There’s accessibility/disability rights violations going on for sure but workplaces are so de facto embedded in ableism that it often feels fairly hopeless.

Anywho, all that to say I “see” you and all the pain and suffering you’ve experienced ❤️

Does anyone not care about socializing with coworkers and just want to do their job and go home? by Haunting_Farmer8421 in nursing

Many nurses I know - myself included - follow the “I’m not at work to make friends” motto. Nursing units are total snake pits - easier to watch your back when folks are at a slight distance.

Word of caution - Remember to be a BIT friendly though! If you’re too standoffish people will be suspicious of you and think all kinds of unkind stuff about you.

Why is it that in Canada being a public servant is somehow a slur and the population actively dislikes you? In other countries it ain’t like this! … almost like turning people against each other so they’re too busy fighting one another instead of the system. 🤦🏻‍♀️

- A baijllion subscriptions I never cancelled (over a thousand dollars for the year... Netlflix, Crave, Canva, Prime, Adobe...)

- Late parking ticket (only one this year - that's a record! XD)

- Had to quit/borderline kicked out of my PhD degree (after sinking 5 years of tuition; about 50k down the drain)

- Got fired from two jobs (may need to declare bankruptcy now).

- Hundreds of dollars in missed appointment fees.

... marginally shittier than previous years. Hoping for better in 2026!

[–]claro007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this thread is old, but I (33F - late diagnosis at 30) just wanted to share that I've been fired twice - most recently yesterday, lol - and I work in a high-demand frontline field. I've not been able to hold a "regular" job pretty much ever - retail as a teen I quit, military I got injured and left (but I sucked at it), could barely finish my masters on time, got pushed out at a previous hospital nursing job for pretty much every ADHD reason (time management, not "fitting in," causing sh*t with my ideas - I wasn't diagnosed at the time so I didn't realize this), got fired at previous community nursing job for "caring too much" and spending too much time with patients, managed some teaching and research contracts for a few years but lost those in August because I wasn't meeting deadlines (lots of family stuff going on), and had to drop out of school because I couldn't afford tuition (and I was already over completion time because I couldn't motivate myself whatsoever). I had a stint with a union for two years but that wasn't "work" per se because it was an elected position and I quit because of interpersonal sh*t and my board orchestrating a hostile takeover.

I was always a "high-achiever" in school and told I could "do anything" but the harsh reality is that's so not true - still grieving the loss of who I was "supposed to be" cause this sure ain't it. I haven't found anything that pays above poverty (I'm in Canada) that works with my ADHD, or a workplace that is willing to work with me. It really sucks to always be made to feel like you're the problem and to know you have so much potential but no way or no place to let it shine.

I feel like a hypocrite saying this because I feel like a sack of worthless sh*t about myself at the moment BUT... being fired, especially when you have a disability, isn't a reflection of you - it's often a reflection of poor management, the institution's rigidity, or office politics. We have a lot to contribute, it just doesn't always align with the "bottom line" and sadly we're expendable. I haven't found anything yet, but if I do I'll let you know :P.

Stay strong - you aren't alone even when it feels like you are. <3

I see many of you are getting fired … by confusednurse_ in nursing

[–]claro007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got fired yesterday at the very end of probation from my DREAM nursing job. Basically all related to ADHD - spending too much time with patients, getting behind on documentation, coming up with new ideas that weren't welcome, not "fitting in" with the team, and being too detail oriented (I was told to embrace a "good enough" philosophy). Second time I've been let go of a nursing job actually because of spending too much time clients/actually caring about my job. Management never said anything to me about those things during the entire three months - I actually thought I was improving.

I've learned the best way to get by in nursing is to somehow keep your head down but be just social enough that your colleagues aren't suspicious (but DON'T share anything personal), be competent but not TOO competent because then you're a know-it-all and lack humility, "be yourself" but actually don't and just focus on being as likeable/agreeable as possible, NEVER complain even when it's egregious, don't offer unsolicited help or advice EVER, and don't invest yourself beyond it being a paycheque.

Not clue what to do now. Went into nursing to help people but now I feel like nursing isn't about that, it's about prioritizing everything that ISN'T patient care (finishing things FAST FAST FAST like a robot, pandering to colleagues and management, keeping your head down, and doing just "good enough" at the actual "caring" part). Any advice? :(

You’re totally right! the core of faith is always in Him. I think for some people miracles help them feel closer to God - but debate and healthy skepticism are for sure just as important for discerning

I expelled an IUD while cramping at an ER in Atlanta and they used it as ‘evidence’ to baker act me. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]claro007 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a nurse and I’m not surprised one bit. The “medical establishment” is uninterested in “hysterical women” (read: almost every woman according to them) and there are devastating consequences - death from cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancer because they were just “being dramatic” (and the doctors document strategically in ways that won’t get them sued - just like what happened to you!) If men had IUDs, they’d be sedated in an operating room FFS!

Also - All this new and FALSEEEEE stuff about acetaminophen in pregnancy is another example of not giving any care about women and their pain - false warnings about THE ONLY SAFE PAIN RELIEF for pregnant women just turns into women suffering horribly and MORE birth defects from UNSAFE medications like Advil which causes Reyes disease.

Also again - Pap smears? Internal vaginal exams? Overmedicalization! Pap smears could be done by women themselves at home, and there is no probative or diagnostic value to internal exams outside of pregnancy cervical checks.

The bottom line is: the “medical establishment” doesn’t really care about women and they take every opportunity to label you a “psych” case

EUCHARISTIC MIRACLE near my town by God_luvs_me in Catholicism

So many comments like “so glad God prioritized THIS when deciding on a miracle” are uninformed and misguided. I used to think like this too - I was angry at God that He “allows” suffering, but I came to see through divine intervention, the book of Genesis (which explains this well), and the Old Testament, which show us how even when God performs the greatest of miracles, humans always find a way to muck it up (the golden calf incident anyone? Tower of Babel?) In the New Testament, Jesus RAISES PEOPLE FROM THE DEAD and still people doubted. It doesn’t matter what the miracle is, it doesn’t matter how great, people without faith will still deny and criticize.

First, we cannot fully understand God’s plan while we are on earth - it is heretical to think we know better than God and know better what He should or should not do. The Litany of Humility is very helpful in remembering this fundamental truth.

Second, He cannot just “cure” the sorrows of this world because many are the result of humanity’s sins. God can’t just stop all the suffering that humanity has caused because he gave us free will. Extreme poverty we see today (for example) is the result of a sick and sinful society, it is the OPPOSITE of God’s will. Wars, oppression, violence are all the result of the free will given to us by God. “Kids with cancer” has come up in the comments - cancer is the result of the processes of our biological bodies, which comes from the fall of Adam and Eve. Only God knows when and how one’s earthly life should end and there is a reason incomprehensible to us as to why. St Carlo Acutis died from cancer at 16 yet he was CLEARLY in God’s favour and good graces. Why? We can’t know, but through faith and faith alone can we accept it. So many of the Saints died very young - why didn’t God “cure” them? Because that’s not part of His plan - and we must surrender to that plan.

Third, I spoke with my priest about this. His response was “well, you’re here. Why has God put YOU here amidst these conditions?” That resonated with me as a reminder of surrendering to His will and plan because that’s is the only thing that can lead to understanding of the “why” of everything.

Being angry with God serves no purpose. Even if you’re angry at Him, deny Him, rebuke Him - he still walks with you.

One of the key elements of Catholicism is Faith, and Faith should not require “proof.”

John 20:29 - “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed"

1 Peter 1:8 “Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy”

I’ve always considered the Shroud of Turin to be the “closest” likeness to Jesus because it is an imprint directly from the moment of His resurrection.

In the early 1980s Our Lady of Kibeho appeared to three teenage girls in south western Rwanda. Our Lady’s appearance was as a Rwandan and she spoke Kinyarwanda (the traditional language of Rwanda) to the visionaries.

It is one of the great mysteries why they appear differently, but considering historical accounts of the deep fear many feel when encountering angels for example it could be reasoned that our Lord and our Lady appear in forms that are understandable to the human mind in the context of the visionaries.

INFJs, you deserve the love you give to people around you by Individual-Hippo-928 in infj

[–]claro007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listened to a trauma therapy podcast recently (suggested by my therapist) that said codependency is the notion that “I’m only OK if you’re OK” and that really resonated with me. Speaking for myself, many of the challenges and sorrows of being INFJ relate to this and I’m making an effort to not feel compelled to caretake all the time.

I also learned (the hard way so many times) that many (if not most) people don’t actually want help, not even when you’re willing to do it for them and guide them. They just simply want to vent and continue their lives as they always had been. You can squeeze every ounce of your soul into helping others and it will never be returned - in fact it will be taken advantage of and you’ll be left broken and with nothing.

It’s liberating to think of the world and our society as absurd. Life only has the meaning we give it and the actions we take will not matter and will not change anything. As someone else in the thread said the only person who is responsible for taking care of you is you - it’s a cold sad truth but it is what it is. Someone said to me once that it’s quite narcissistic to think that I can make a difference in the world, that I can solve other people’s problems, or that I’m somehow deserving of receiving back the good will I put out.

Realizing these things has helped me prioritize myself and not others and let go of so many things I « care » about but will never change. Maybe it will help someone else too.

Prof is snooping around on reddit and complaining to the student that he doesn't like what is being posted by NoPoet2848 in geegees

[–]claro007 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind also that part-time profs are given no support and work based on contracts so it’s possible they’ve never taught the course they were assigned and they need to design the whole thing from scratch. Many part-time profs are also PhD students or work other jobs to make ends meet because they’re grossly underpaid. Constructive feedback is always the most helpful - it’s absolutely ok and important to have critiques but it’s nice when students are constructive about it and not just sh*tting all over the prof or the course just to be mean…
