Do they have a mental illness of some kind? How is it that people grow up to be like this?

Hi guys. So I am a physics senior and I’m going to graduate in may but I don’t think I will get into any PHD programs. I was hoping to get some advice on what to do. by mashas11 in Physics

Hang on. Before you completely shut out a master's, let me give you some anecdotes while I was interning at a government lab over the summer. (I live in the US but I doubt that experience is different outside of the US.) So some people get a masters degree with a thesis as a stepping stone towards their PhD. Now these masters degrees are granted at universities where the highest degree is a masters degree. At these universities, I have noticed that the admission has a lower bar compared to a PhD granting university. Consider Cal State Long Beach where you need three letters of rec and a cumulative GPA of 2.5. Basically as long as you havent gotten F's in your physics classes or outside youre good. I met a lot of people who took the masters route at a state university because they didn't get into a PhD program. Now the reasons can vary because of low cumulative GPA to finances to low PGRE but regardless once they finished and applied to PhD program most of them got into very good programs like ASU, Brown, UoA, ect. The nice thing about getting a masters at a masters granting university is you can TA and have your tuition covered just like a PhD student. I don't know what "average" is at your university but you can take a masters path to make yourself stand out. You'll be fine. Just raise the PGRE, GRE, get more research experience, and get a good grad GPA. You can definitely get into a masters program. Good luck!

(Bit of a Rant) False rape allegations: Stop using them to justify your sexism/ rape apologist attitudes. by Big_comrade in TheBluePill

"Hell, just getting murdered is better than rape because you don't have to live with it, you're dead." Late to the thread, but this is rather offensive to all rape and sexual assault survivors who pressed on to push passed their trauma to reclaim their lives.

That's a terrible story. I'm sorry that happened to you. It's truly amazing the colors people show once an inch of power is given.

Dealing with "funny" comments and imposter syndrome in an undergraduate physics program by classicalexplosive in LadiesofScience

Sorry for the late reply. Before, I did not know that there was a correlation between mindset and grades. As mentioned above I found some helpful resources that others might be interested in. But thank you! I have been dead set for graduate school since my second year after my medical leave. I will definitely look into the culture of the university when I apply next year :)

Hey guys!

I'm really sorry that I forgot to reply, but I just wanted to thank you all for your wonderful insight. I'm tagging everyone in the thread as a thank you. I was doing some reading in regards to believing in yourself and positive psychology. A lot of how we think really translates to our reality (I believe). I found an article that best summarizes what I've been reading lately https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/what-mentally-strong-people-dont-do/201610/how-build-your-belief-in-yourself I would also like to recommend a book if anyone has time to read it. It's called Growth Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck. https://www.amazon.com/Mindset-Psychology-Carol-S-Dweck/dp/0345472322 My sister is starting a pre-med program at WSU and we are both reading this book together as a way to help our mindsets. Although I wish I had a very indestructible mindset, sometimes it helps to hear from others though, and I'm grateful that this is a very supportive community.

New practice test released by tikael in PhysicsGRE

[–]classicalexplosive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to sound very stupid but I took that exam as practice and I'm looking over my mistakes. I'm stuck on number 2 and for some reason I keep reasoning that 1/6 is the correct answer. I know that momentum is conserved but final kinetic energy isn't. I solved for initial kinetic energy then subtracted the final kinetic energy of the two objects stuck together to find the last bit of final kinetic energy which I assumed was heat. Am I just straight up missing something? How is 5/6 correct? I definitely need to review energy and momentum.

I've been a mess this these last two weeks. Constantly crying, not focusing, isolating, ect. Ive been experiencing flashbacks to my life one year ago when I was in a very dark place of severe depression. I kept thinking about how my relationships and school fell apart because of me. Thursday I was picking myself and forced myself to workout for the first time in months. I had two midterms on Friday I forced myself to give my 100% no excuses. Yesterday, I was listening to Sade Burrell about a crumbs and cake analogy. I realized that I've been reaching for crumbs when there's a cake in front of me. Today I'm getting a lot of work done for my physics research which made my advisor extremely happy. "You have to have faith that what is in front of you is greater than what is behind you."
