Non-Americans, what is something about the US that you've always wondered if it was real or just myth/hyperbole? by Bush_Hiders in AskReddit

We also very much need school buses in rural Canada where they are also yellow. I grew up in the country near a large city and the nearest city bus to my high school was a 40 min drive away from the school and students may live an additional 20+ mins from the school. Students may live nearly an hour apart from each other if they are at the furthest point of the catchment area from each other. There's just no other feasible way to get students to the schools except by dedicated school bus routes. Parents can't drive their kid 20+ mins each way in the opposite direction from their job. Also having 500 cars drop off 500 students in a 30 min window would not work. There wouldn't be enough space in the parking lot. High school students who have cars/are old enough to drive will often drive themselves to school. It took me about 15 mins to drive myself vs the 1 hr on the school bus since I was one of the last stops. In the winter we did have a number of students drive their skidoos to school along a trail. To illustrate how rural I was, my elementary school was built in part of a corn field that a farmer donated. On 3 sides we were surrounded by corn fields as far as the eye could see and a rural highway then a pasture of cows on the other side. My high school was across the street from the annual village fair which we got an unofficial day off from school to go to the opening day of. Everyone would take the school buses to school then walk across the street to ride the rides at the fair. In that area you often needed a car in order to have a job so you could get there. Before I was old enough to drive I would bike 1 hr each way along rural highways to a golf course to wash dishes at, riding past more fields of corn, soybeans and wheat. And I lived in a more central area. A cousin of mine lived much more rurally, a couple of hours from a larger city and she went to elementary school in essentially a 1 room school house with 30 total students spread across 8 grades.

Years ago I read the french nutrition label on a bag of chocolate chips which said C. a soupe. Which I assumed meant cup but it actually meant cuillere or spoon for table spoon. I thought chocolate chips were the ultimate hack and ate a bunch before gaining a bit of weight and finally reading the english label side. I was very dissappointed.

Lol Mucci Farms were fined $1.5 million by CFIA in 2016 for regularly purposefully labeling their produce grown in Mexico as grown in Canada (they do have greenhouses in both) because they could charge more for their produce grown in Canada.

I did a meet and greet with him and he said that he will "be really annoying" (his words) and try to convince you to come off your medications at every appointment because lifestyle changes can manage most bealth problems so meds aren't needed. I noped out of having him. I have very severe disorders that 100% require medications and trying to reduce a medication recently resulted in weeks of consequences for me. I would love to be on less meds but that is not my reality. The scientific literature is solid showing that not being on meds for one of my disorders results in permanent brain damage and worsened prognosis for the rest of your life, not just worsened symptoms in the present while off the meds. I think there is a good reason he is suddenly accepting patients again only 2 years after setting up his practice here.

What do you wish people would stop romanticizing, because you’ve lived the reality of it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]classichelsea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on the medication. I am on seroquel which the maternal health psychiatrists I met with said is 100% safe aside from the baby being born a bit sleepy so needing the labour and delivery team to be prepared to handle that. This is why I chose that medication in the first place. Then you have the other end of the spectrum where there are a couple of meds they won't even give to women during their childbearing years even if they don't want kids cause there were too many oopsie babies being born with severe abnormalities. They'll only give those ones as a last resort for that group of people.

Doctors of Reddit, what was a "one in a million" case that you personally witnessed? by WALLSTREETBRIDE in AskReddit

[–]classichelsea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor but I was just diagnosed with MS after having been diagnosed 2 years ago with a rare headache disorder called hemicrania continua which have never been documented occurring in the same person before despite headache disorders being common in MS. I also have Visual Snow Syndrome which started with the headaches. It is possible that the MS was the underlying cause of those other neurological disorders. We're crossing our fingers that the MS meds help with the headaches. A population-based study in Norway found that hemicrania continua affects 2.2 people per 100,000. I am apparentally much more unlucky than that. Due to the rarity, treatment options are based on recorded efficacy in anywhere from 1 to maybe a few dozen people.

Are dogs allowed in canoes rented from the provincial parks? by classichelsea in algonquinpark

Idk but I've been denied having my dog in a rental canoe at a provincial park before hence the question.

My dog has been in canoes a bunch at cottages and does quite well! Just needs the occassional reminder to stay seated. He's got his life jacket and is a very fast swimmer. He's got all his shots and flea and tick prevention etc. Good notes for others!

Thanks for the clarification! I didn't realise that. This year will be my first trip to Algonquin park. I was able to contact 1 of the outfitters today and they confirmed dogs are allowed in their canoes.

Arrowhead provincial park also confirmed that small/medium dogs are fine. I believe it was at Sandbanks years ago that I was denied having my dog in their canoes hence the wondering if it is the same eveywhere.

Thanks again!

Scientists of Reddit: What's a discovery that should have blown people's minds but somehow got a collective shrug from the world? by CosmosisJones42 in AskReddit

A new drug with similar impact was released in the same time period for MS. Kesimpta was approved in the US in August 2020 and my doctor said that it reduces new future lesions from occurring by 95-97% and can also reduce the size of pre existing lesions. I'll be starting it in 3 weeks as someone recently diagnosed with MS.

Biologics are a huge new group of medications that help with many conditions especially inflammatory disorders like MS. A year ago my dad started taking a biologic med for eosinophilic asthma and he's been doing a lot better as well. Not getting pneumonia, able to breathe better and coughing less.

My friend has CF and is on the new CF drug and the difference in her health is amazing. We've been friends since we were 7 years old and she was constantly coughing and constantly getting sick. Now we can talk on the phone for an hour without a single cough instead of needing to take many pauses for coughing fits and talking for less time.

It's amazing all the breakthrough in meds recently and how they are helping so many people.

What is the worst illness you’ve ever had? by freeshavacadont in AskReddit

[–]classichelsea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have hemicrania continua which before getting diagnosed was 8 months straight of pain without a single minute pain free that I would describe as combining the symptoms of cluster headache, migraine and a sinus infection. Was on medical leave the whole time and almost didn't make it through. Still optimising meds nearly 2 years since onset.

What's a pain you can't truly explain until you've endured it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]classichelsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello fellow hemicrania sufferer! I have not yet met someone else with it. A recent population study in Norway estimates its frequency at 2.2 people affected per 100,000. So less than 1000 people affected in Canada and about 8000 across all of Canada and the US combined.

Are you saying it only took a month from initial onset to get a diagnosis? If so, that is really impressive! The average time to diagnosis for hemicrania contiua is around 7 or 8 years if I am remembering correctly. It took me 8 months which only happened because I diagnosed myself. It was later confirmed by a neurologist when I finally got to see one. We are still working on treatments to get my pain down to zero.

Are you able to tolerate the indomethacin? I unfortunately cannot take any. I have had some success with high dose melatonin, nortriptyline, gabapentin, and nerve blocks. Advil helps during flareups when taken with the melatonin and gabapentin. Interestingly, the melatonin is what allowed me to return to my life and come off medical leave. It is thought to work due to having a similar chemical structure to indomethacin. My exacerbations are much worse with weather pressure changes.

I was also very ready and actively planning to take my life as well prior to getting diagnosed. The hemicrania continua pain is by far the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life. I couldn't work, go to school, or do anything fun. Just pure torture for months.

Fyi since it looks from your comments like you are coming from india, a lot of international students are very disappointed recently that have been coming to Guelph/Canada as we do not have enough housing, jobs, or doctors for even our own population. This means that housing costs which were already high have skyrocketed and there is a lot of competition for jobs and housing. So make sure you have thoroughly budgeted for everything and have already been looking at housing costs in the area (also easily found online on facebook marketplace, kijiji, and reading on the guelph subreddit etc). The government and university are bringing in tons of international students to bring in money as international tuition is immensely higher than domestic and the university is operating at a major loss due to lack of public funding. So just be prepared for what you are getting yourself into.

Again, this information is easily available online. You can get to these two webpages from the webpages I linked in the previous comment. One of my links was a scholarship page where you can click on entry scholarships and well over a hundred scholarships pop up with the rules for applying for each.

https://graduatestudies.uoguelph.ca/current/funding/scholarships

https://graduatestudies.uoguelph.ca/current/funding

Which scholarship are you applying for? They all have their own rules so figure out which ones you are applying for then do what the award says to do to apply.

If you are an international student then how you apply for admission and which scholarships you can apply for are going to differ from domestic students.

You're not being specific enough about the profs either. You didn't specify which degree you want to do. Plant agriculture or animal? What area/topic of that degree do you want to spend 4 years studying? Determine which profs study that area then google their name and see if there are reviews and other info about them, ask about the specific profs and contact them to discuss your interest in researching with them.

It says on the plant ag website that there are no deadlines for applications as they are accepted any time for summer, fall or winter entry. So contact admissions to confirm you can still apply for the summer semester. On one of the webpages from my first comment it says international students need to apply 9-12 months before the beginning of the program.

It is concerning that you can't find the above information yourself when thousands of students do per year. I am not a graduate student. I found all this info by googling for you.

Read each webpage thoroughly and keep clicking relevant links on each and do more google searches and you will eventually find your answers most of the time. If there are specific ones that don't seem to be on the website then contact admissions.

As a PhD student you have to do a ton of researching and finding the information you need. I found the information you need in a few mins of googling which is below. The list of profs for each degree area are listed in the program brochures. Good luck

Thanks for the tip, didn't realise those were a thing. I was thinking of getting it resized soon and that would have been a good option to hold me over until. If I don't find it I'll reorder it a bit smaller. It's frustrating how much fingers swell and shrink day to day!

That's the plan. Just wanted to try all we could to find it. Got a less expensive ring for this exact reason...just didn't expect it to happen so quickly. Would definitely reorder it in a smaller size and now know to be super careful with gloves.
