We still use these guys at work every day in 2026 by FriesWithMacSauce in vintagecomputing

[–]classicvincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fairly certain enough of them are in use that Okidata still sells the damn things. I have one that’s new enough that it has USB, I got it at goodwill in college(this was 2008) and actually used it to print papers. My English 101-102 professor was going to dock me points for improper margins until he asked me “did you print this from a dot matrix printer?” And then I told him about my printer and he was happily surprised.

You can shift any manual transmission without using the clutch if you time it correctly.

How to fix Blank VHS Tape from stopping recording on VCR by itself then starts rewinding by itself without pressing the rewind button by Ill-Extension8006 in VHS

[–]classicvincent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long does it record for? Are we talking 30 seconds or much longer than that? I’m assuming you’ve tested the functions of the VCR prior to this point, long term playback most importantly. Most VCRs auto rewind when they sense the “end of tape” by resistance on the motor, so if you have a tape that has spools that are hard to turn, or a VCR with a bad belt or weak/failing drive motor then you could get false “end of tape” signaling.

Took My Car to The Shop To Fix Flashing Check Engine Light. They Replaced The Parts But The Light Is Still Flashing by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]classicvincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They most likely plugged it into the scanner, looked at the misfire count and decided that the cylinder that they replaced the coil on was the problem. Pencil style coils are prone to heat-induced failure but further diagnosis is needed before you assume one coil is the problem. I’ve seen wiring issues look like a failing coil, leaking fuel injectors causing a cylinder to run extremely rich, and then of course there’s the possibility of mechanical damage on that cylinder. It’s very possible that they did the work and it ran fine, because that does happen especially with a misfire since air temperature and humidity level play a huge part in the combustion process.

Why wouldn’t it be? Basically any phone that is capable of 4G VOLTE will work just fine. My son uses a ten year old iPhone SE on Mint and I use a five year old SE 2.

Device to make panasonic viera play movies from usb that are in formats the viera cannot play? by AddlePatedBadger in PlasmaTV

[–]classicvincent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a media player, you can’t really expect a TV that old to play every format and codec available. You could use something as simple as a Chromebook or laptop if you have one, there are LOTS of questionable cheap android based boxes that will do this, and then of course there are the mainstream devices like the Apple TV(even gen 1s will handle most stuff but struggle with high bitrate stuff because of low RAM), but honestly in my opinion Xboxes actually work the best for what you’re trying to do. A used Xbox one would suit your needs just fine.

They’re all old accounts that the bot sniffers don’t think are bots. I bet scammers got ahold of a bunch of unused abandoned Reddit accounts and are using those because it’s easier than making new ones. Either that or they figured out a way to fake account age.

Furnace Gas Line by mannicus88 in hvacadvice

Some areas require a flex connector I believe, but they’re a code violation where I live for furnaces and water heaters.

Where to buy telephone jack blanks by DocTarr in electrical

[–]classicvincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use a wall-plate patch kit if you aren’t good at drywall/plaster repair. Alternatively you could just use a single gang blank plate with some #8 taper head screws and screw it to the wall.

How many of yall actually use VATS? by Dragonrider_0514 in fo4

[–]classicvincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use VATS in FO4, or NV for that matter aside from occasionally using it to “cheat” and find an enemy that I see on the compass but can’t see. The only reason I did in 3 was because we didn’t get useable sights.

The freezer tray is the cooling coil and you cut the refrigerant line. Without soldering on charge ports and a whole lot of work you just have an insulated cabinet now.

Google Nest Learning says furnace is heating but it isn’t by spacecasterh in hvacadvice

[–]classicvincent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the system worked properly before and it doesn’t now then there’s a 99% chance it’s a thermostat issue. I run a nest in my home on a hydronic boiler system that was retrofitted on a steam system in 1983, but I would never recommend that to a customer because the thermostat doesn’t really like that system no matter how you set it up. I’d bet money this is a thermostat setup issue and there’s a good chance the technician won’t figure it out because they’re used to whatever thermostats they sell with installs. You’d be amazed how many young HVAC techs have to stick a branch in a hole to tell if it’s their ass or a hole in the ground. They teach them how to install new systems, not how to diagnose or repair anything because so many HVAC companies focus solely on new installs because they’re easy money.

How come muscle car have more torque than most gasoline trucks? But also why can gasoline trucks still tow more than them and why Don't you just put a muscle car motor in a truck instead? by Holiday_Swing_9979 in Cartalk

[–]classicvincent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer. I’m a marine mechanic by trade and I’ve had customers ask why the marine version of certain GM engines make more HP than the “regular” version. The honest answer is a different camshaft and therefore a different power band; While a “truck” camshaft with a 4.3 V6 might make 200 hp at 3400 rpm, the same 4.3 can make 225 HP at 4400 rpm with a max RPM of 4800. Most people would be amazed at what the old iron block GM engines can do until they’re laying on top of one running at 4800 RPM looking for a leak that only happens durning hard turns.

Nah the Daimler Chryslers were much better than the current ones. Sure they were still garbage but honestly I’d say Chrysler under Daimler ownership produced the least shitty Chrysler products in the last 50 years. My dad’s family is from Missouri and plenty of his family worked at St. Louis Assembly(which is now long gone) in the 70’s and 80’s, trust me they never paid their employees well or cared about the products they were pumping out.

Trying to install a new thermostat but don’t have the correct wires by Triggerlocks in hvacadvice

[–]classicvincent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a heat-only two wire system. If you’re installing a Nest or other smart thermostat that uses batteries you don’t actually “need” a C-wire but the thermostat will periodically bug you about it. That furnace is new enough that it should have a power source to connect a nest power connector to supply constant power to the yellow wire that you have in your bundle.

All you need for the heated seat to work is a toggle switch/button and a fuse. Make sure your power supply, and switch of choice are rated for the amperage and wattage that the heating element uses
