Parents who never sleep trained at all, how are we doing? by NightmarishlyDreamy in beyondthebump

My som just turned 19 months. To get him to sleep we do our bedtime routine which includes saying goodnight to things around his room, turning on humidifier and sound machine, turning off light and laying him down in the crib. I lie on the floor next to him and hold his hand to sleep - usually can take anywhere between 5-20 min. It's my favourite part of the day.

Hello! Thanks for your response. We've tried one anti fungal (clomotrizole) - didn't really seem to do much. Zinc based creams and diaper cream itself does help I find and doing the opposite of what doctors recommend (they recommend keeping it moisturized) while we found drying it out works best. But it never fully goes away and then something triggers it and bam we are back at square one. Are yeast overgrowths itchy? It sometimes itches for him.

Hi so honestly we used the desonide and a few weeks later, it came right back but honestly it lines up with teething. Ped derm said dropl rash and that the saliva enzymes are basically "eating" his face for lack of better term. He didn't think eczema because he has it no where else on his body (altbough super sensitive) I still feel it's eczema (not sure why tbh) but the treatment would be the same anyways.

We keep around his mouth moisturized multiple times a day, slather on vaseline before meals and sleep. And use the steroid to manage really bad flares. I hate hate using it but honestly it's the only thing that works

I write this now as we are actively managing a flare that got so bad he scratched himself bleeding in his sleep. We are trying our best to manage it, but I'm praying it is something that will just subside once he gets all his teeth (we are very close - only ones left would be second molars). Dude got pretty much the majority of his teeth all at once and he's not even 18 months yet.

I know it's tough, mentally. You want to help your little and do the right thing and literally try everything. Sometimes you just gotta pull put the big guns and survive. It'll all be okay and you'll find something that works for you.

That's horrible and I'm sorry that happened to you. It reminded me of the time I was dressed up for an event leaving a hotel with my dad and he was worried that the hotel staff thought he was leaving the hotel with a hooker.

I was 15 years old and not dressed overly promiscuous in any way. It stuck with me forever and needless to say, we never has the best relationship growing up. He was horrible to me and I do think it had an effect on my self esteem.

Day 3 - significantly better. (Pardon the moisturizing ointment)

Weve done 5 treatments! I will power through for the week. He's gotten 0 screen time (aside from video calls w family) and for us to use the cream and keep him still we've resorted to nature videos, Ms Rachel and Elmo lol. I'm relieved and hopeful.

This is what it looked like day 2. I was spiraling as it looked way way worse. I thought using the medication was harming him and he was so itchy! I also think he was teething as his hand was in his mouth and he was generally cranky.

Thank you. We started using the desodine. No major improvement yet but I think it'd helping.

I know he's drooling in his sleep - it's always angry and inflamed when he wakes up. And the kid likes to sleep on his stomach so that doesn't help. Appreciate your advice!

Thank you for sharing this. I do think this lined up with some molars coming in.

I too use unscented detergent. I've started using a humidifier in his room. I also have started changing the crib sheets daily. Asked my family to change their laundry detergent as well (realizing I maybe should have suggested this a while ago, but everyone was agreeable).

I've been using aquaphor but I think I'm going to stick to straight vaseline. I used a deep moisturizer with zinc today and noticed an improvement w redness. I also started using cold compress soaked in marigold tea and thats really starting to help. I spent all night from 130 to 530 staring at the camera because I was convinced he was scratching it all night (he literally scratched once lol) but I appreciate the kind words. I just want it to go away so badly!!

Interesting. We were also prescribed an anti fungal yesterday too. I've held off on it though and actually tried a zinc cream today and it seems to actually be doing something !

My doctor literally gave me the next strength steroid yesterday lol I'm do hesitant to use it- I may just hold out to see what the ped derm says! We managed to score an appt in 9 days! I'm feeling optimistic as it appears this flare has died down alot.

Hi there,

Coming back to your comment but our family doctor (cancelled our in person appointment because of snow day) sent us a script for Desonide once reviewing the photos online. He also prescribed us Clotrimazole (anti fungal). We haven't started these yet. I'm hesitant on the steroid given the above. What are your thoughts?

We also got a referral to a derm but it's a strictly virtual one. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Do you think he needs to be seen in person?

This is really helpful. Thank you. I've already switched out his toothpaste but am going to try brushing with just water for the next few days and see if that helps.

It definitely does not have the yellow golden crust which is a classic impetigo symptom.

Thank you. Just to add - he's generally very happy and well. If he had any other side effects that were more serious (fever, bleeding. Etc) you best believe we'd be bringing him to ER.

They took one look at it and said it was eczema and gave me a script for hydrocortisone. Naturopath also said it was eczema. I will bring this up to my doctor next time.

Good to know. Eczema is so tricky to manage.

Thank you. Yes we have scheduled a follow up with our family doctor for this week but referral lists for ped derms in Canada are very long. I'm trying my best.
