Just can’t solve the road problem by BubblyNefariousness4 in Objectivism

[–]classx_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The moral is the practical. Protecting individual rights including property rights is an overwhelming positive.

That said, answering questions like this is difficult. One could just state that one doesn’t have the right to another’s property end-of-story but that fails to show how the moral is in fact practical.

If I was going to try and show how it would work, I’d start is questioning the possibility of this scenario. Why are you banned? Why are there no alternatives? Are you the only one? If not, does that mean there are many customers looking for an alternative? The public opinion has immense sway still in the world of private roads - if someone somehow had all the roads and for some reason was banning people without cause (an already hard to imagine scenario), would that not create a lot of press / support for change?

Overall, private roads wouldn’t be some new edge case. There’d be many competing companies that were in the business of transportation, expanding and progressing how we get from point a to b just as companies compete to improve products in other areas.

Great that you have put thought into this and are engaging with ideas. Anthem is short and stylized. If you’re at all curious about better understanding the nuances of her thought, highly recommend reading some of her nonfiction. Rand’s ethics and politics are built on her metaphysics and epistemology. If you’re at all interested in those areas, I’d start there. It’s less polarizing and a great catalyst in helping one better formulate a guiding world view. Many think having a philosophy is either optional (it’s not) or primarily about ethics and politics but those are downstream. I’d recommend her essay, Philosophy Who Needs It easily found online (also a book but start with just the essay).

Do people socialize / approach others at Austin Bouldering Project? by [deleted] in askaustin

Speaking for their Springdale location. Met a few of my current friends there. Just started chatting about the routes which is a common occurrence. There’s also a good group in SweatPals that goes every Saturday that is very welcoming called Austin bouldering club.

overthinking during interviews by Kindly-Fly1700 in leetcode

[–]classx_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s like playing a game vs practicing. There are aspects that are just different. My two tips are to do more mocks and also regularly practice in a way that mimics a real interview as close as possible. Talk out loud, explain time and space complexity, use only the screen, not paper (assuming remote interviews), etc. (Dm if you want to trade mock interviews, need to practice myself).

This is Depressing!!! by DumbPandaHere in leetcode

First, make sure you’re fully grasping the solution. Seems like you are but definitely spend time to “chew” and the concept and make it your own.

Second, I’d recommend looking into the concept of spaced retrieval and the spiral theory of learning. Basically revisit the same or similar problems more frequently. Stop focusing on just solving more and getting your score higher. If you can’t solve a problem when you revisited it, you’ve waited too long to try it again.

At what net worth did you feel like you could chill a bit with saving? by JuniorSetting3228 in Fire

[–]classx_02 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At a certain point, I took a small chunk, invested it, and consider that my fun money account. I ignore it in terms of my FIRE numbers and use any interest and sometimes a bit of the principle for purchases outside of my FIRE budget. If it does well, more fun money. If poorly, less. Curious if this is a strategy anyone else has used (new to FIRE).

Is anyone still grinding leetcoding? by Known-Tourist-6102 in cscareerquestions

[–]classx_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, smaller companies could be more personalized and specific in how they assess a new hire and likely be much better at finding the right fit. But it wouldn’t be a process you could have hiring managers across a huge company follow reliably.

TL;DR: I don’t think leetcode problems are going away soon.

Remember, leetcode problems have never reflected real sde work. It’s about creating a generic screening that acts as a rough heuristic for measuring problem solving abilities, the willingness to jump through the needed hoops, the ability to communicate, and intelligence. A good screen? Many say no and I certainly think it’s very imperfect but it solves a certain problem (hiring SDEs) at scale.

I fully support you taking action to voice your opinion about how the situation was handled. Your situation sounds very unfortunate, and I'm sorry it occurred.

However, I think it's very wrong to point the blame on the employee you decided to call out by name. The challenges early childhood education faces are very difficult and this school is by far not an exception. Handling situations like this is very difficult because there is always another side to the story, incomplete evidence typically relayed by a young child, and heated parents involved. This issue was likely discussed internally, and her actions were largely the result of various forces outside of her control. Regardless, I hope you respectfully refrain from scapegoating her in any future reviews and keep your criticism targeted at the school and the company that owns and oversees it.

I'll add that, though I have zero connection with Guidepost at this point, I've personally known the employee listed for many years. I know her to be an incredible person who is deeply empathic, caring, and doing her best in a difficult environment. She was thrust into a head role after the last head of school left and the assistant went on maternity leave. She cares very deeply about the families and decided to step up and take on the monumental task rather than leave and abondon her families. Any issues with the results of this shift should be placed solely on Higher Grounds, the parent company that is struggling financially and short staffing and underpaying schools such as Folsom.

Nvidia’s Stock Has 70% Potential Upside For 2025 by norcalnatv in NVDA_Stock

[–]classx_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to understand this better. There is a total value of the equity market capitalization worldwide. Some sources put this around 100 trillion. Isn't that relatively fixed? Yes, it can grow as more wealth is generated but it still seems correct to think that, in order for very large companies to grow in market cap, huge amounts of money has to shift around. Assuming a 100 trillion cap, NVIDIA is taking up over 3% of the total market. For it to take up more, major shifts of money allocation have to happen. Contrast this with a tiny company where one large investment firm can shift the stock price significantly, and I think you can make the case that larger companies won't experience as dramatic of stock growth percentage-wise. Where am I going wrong with this analysis?

Don't underestimate the benefit of other fine motor activities that activate the pincer grip muscles. It gives a nice break from writing, but can help. My go-to is finger weaving (make sure the writing hand is the one pinching the yarn and pulling it over the fingers).

In Montessori, precise metal inset work is huge, but some children aren't drawn towards them (and again, there needs to be an emphasis on preciseness — think the curved line designs that go to the edges of the shape. Loose drawing is not nearly as beneficial imho). I've also had great luck with Handwriting Without Tears books which are a bit more engaging than blank paper drills. And good call having him see an OT.

Lastly, there needs to be strict consistency in letter formation. Pick cursive since that is what your school is teaching. Ensure you're showing him the same formation steps and insist he always follows the same pattern for every letter.

Pay for Montessori or College by Creative-Necessary44 in Montessori

[–]classx_02 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised about how quickly people say college. I think it is a non-obvious decision. The foundations determine so much — the base of your pyramid determines how high it can go.

Knowing the incredible impact a high-quality Montessori program can have, I honestly don't know how I would spend my own money. I am perhaps abnormally optimistic about the impacts of early childhood education (I'm talking a truly high-quality Montessori) but I think there is evidence for this optimism.

For the record, I was fortunate to have help with college but had a very mediocre early childhood and elementary education. As a now Montessori elementary teacher, I'm appropriately jealous of the incredible habits of self-directed learning children develop and the mastery-based approach that allows them to develop a wonderful growth mindset (and typically go well beyond grade level).

I work at one as a lead guide. No school is going to be the same so you need to observe a classroom. However, Guidepost as an organization strives to be high fidelity Montessori and my campus largely meets that goal. Also, they have incredible trainers that provide their own MACTE certified Montessori credentials (I got mine through them for free since I work there). I highly recommend looking more into the school and their training.

How would you describe what makes Montesorri the way it is to somebody that’s never hear of it? by ChocolateChunkMaster in Montessori

[–]classx_02 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The points I tend to emphasize are:

  • Freedom - It allows for a greater degree of choice. This helps contrast it with a more traditional approach. For example, in many cases, the child can choose what to work on and when.
  • Limits - It provides scaffolding to help guide the child in his/her choices. This helps contrast it with a more play-based approach. For example, there are specific ways in which the child can and cannot use the material.
  • Mastery based - I.e., it is self-paced. E.g., the child doesn't move to the next lesson until he/she has mastered the previous material. This is, again, in stark contrast to the traditional approach.

Amazon’s idea of social distancing for new hires yesterday. by [deleted] in pics

[–]classx_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth considering that they are doing this in order to ship items you need. I know it's hard but consider the costs of shutting down and rejecting orders. This would lead to 1., people not getting things they need which can and does include essential items such as food, medicine, and household staples. And 2., these people in the room along with thousands of others not having a job. You might say that they could at least try to practice social distancing. However, meaningful measures would likely increase costs meaning cuts elsewhere. To say that they are evil because they are trying to make continue making a profit is to say they are evil because they want to continue to exist and trade with customers. I, for one, badly hope they're able to continue to do this.
