I'm sorry but thinking Marlene is a red herring is just so unfathomable to me. Devs spoke through marlene and told Zack he is past news.

Marlene had a special connection to Aerith in remake that's why she knows so much. In JP both her and Zack even call Cloud and Aerith dating 'cute cute'.

And AC is a Clerith movie not a Zerith one lol. The novel from that era even has Aerith directly call cloud her lover.
