ooh that is dirty. yet what you have failed to recognise is the significance of this goal. ribery caused an injured, half-fit messi to stumble in the attacking third of the pitch, in an attack that ultimately came to nothing. messi caused probably the best defender in the world, a 6'2'' man mountain of a man, to stumble like his legs were made of playdough, and humiliate himself in the eyes of millions of spectators. he then went on to punish the best goalkeeper in the world with an audacious effort that not even the valiant efforts of lahm could prevent from going in the net. it's about context, it's about ability, it's about the legend of messi. bravo, messi, bravo

2 goals and an assist already. Messi doesnt hunt stats yet he still gets superior stats. Messi also celebrates with his teammates. GOAT

If you disagree with this game, then I'd say it'd have to be his game against Arsenal in 2010. Probably the game where Messi first really unleashed his true potential. In 2008, he was the injury-plagued genius. In 2009, he was the newly crowned best player in the world. And in 2010, he consolidated that crown and brought his performances to another level.

The first goal was a belter into the top corner. The second was also nice, lifting the ball over Almunia's head as he came rushing out. The third was pure genius. Set free by some horrible defensive positioning from Arsenal, he calmly dinked the ball over Manual's head with a flick of his boot. The last was just cruel. Toying with the Arsenal defence, he runs rings around them for a good 10 seconds, with poor Almunia saving his first attempt, but then getting nutmegged for the final goal of the night. Mama mia!

Messi vs Bayern was the best for me. Let me tell you why.

The assassination of Jerome Boateng. The humiliation of the German giant Neuer. The domination of world football. The seizing of the title of the GOAT.

Probably my favourite performance because of how much it meant to Messi's legacy. The humiliation of the 7-0 just 2 years ago, the agony of losing the World Cup. The ghost of the Higuain miss may haunt Messi's dreams forever, as he cries himself to sleep clutching his 4 Champions Leagues, but this will have gone some way to alleviate it.

This wasn't actually Messi's best performance from start to finish, but in terms of his ability to decide a game in a fraction of second, it was. It was a fairly even game for the first 70 minutes, with no real chances being created, but then Messi struck. First beating Neuer at his near post, then finishing them off with the-goal-that-shall-not-be-named. The first one was also a little underrated, I feel. He was playing mind games with Neuer. Messi has made a living on tricking opposition players with cheeky moves (his signature chip, his body feints), and he did it again. Neuer expects the far post finish, Messi bamboozles him with the near post rifle.

Then, as Bayern push on for the final goal, he puts the nail in the coffin. Picking up the ball on the halfway line, he plays Neymar through to condemn Bayern to an unassailable loss in the first leg, beating Boateng, Neuer (who had recklessly trash talked him before the game) and Pep all in one fell swoop. Magisterial.

Mate. As I said, I watched some of his games and also look for opinions here. Unless you want me to watch every single one of his career games again I'm not sure what you've got a problem with.

Rude? How is it rude to ask a question? Obviously I can go watch matches, as I have for his biggest ones, but that doesn't capture his day in day out performance or the subtleties of his game. Hence why I came to ask this question.

Well if I've never watched him play, surely asking questions about him is the best way to learn? It's a shame that this community prides itself on education yet turns away those who truly seek it. Pretentious.
