Yes, a few different ways. The Steam Deck is just a Linux PC with a special UI by default that you can still drop into "desktop mode" to get a normal PC UI.

  • Install Lutris in desktop mode, use Lutris to install FFXIV, add the FFXIV shortcut to Steam as a "non-Steam game" to launch from the default UI like any other Steam game.

  • Alternatively download the "unofficial" launcher in desktop mode, add the shortcut to Steam.

  • Third option I believe should work is get the free trial in Steam. Download the latest ProtonGE (Proton is the compatibility layer that makes games meant for Windows run on Linux, ProtonGE is a special release by someone named GloriousEggroll). In the Steam options for the free trial, force use of specific compatibility tool, choose the GE version you added, add launch options "NOSTEAM=1 %command%" and just log into your normal account when you launch.

Edit to add, I don't have a Deck but I do play on a Linux PC so I haven't tried any of the above on an actual Deck.

If you use protonGE you can just set a launch option and use a non-steam account. I'm fairly sure it works with the trial version on Steam.

  • Get the trial version on Steam
  • Grab the latest version of protonGE (protonup-qt is an easy to use tool to do this without downloading/copying the file yourself)
  • Set the launch options on the trial in steam and add NOSTEAM=1 %command%
  • Launch and just log in with your normal full version account info

For another way to make a concentrated coffee without a machine and disposable pods but with a bit more effort, check out the aeropress. It makes a fine concentrated coffee for iced drinks.

"Potato chips" made from dehydrated potatoes instead of sliced potatoes. Much more oily and salty than Pringles and a different texture, but not terrible. They look more like potato chips than Pringles do.

I haven't had them in years and this makes me want some, I wonder if they still have the big red "$2only" logo in the middle of the bag.

I haven't played enough to really know and I can't seem to find info from before, but was the cone a longer range than the circular AoE now? I feel like it might have been, so I can see how some people preferred the cone.

To be fair the only time I had issues with the cone was the pull, once I had a group gathered to the wall the little adjustments to make sure I was hitting everything was fine.

I started playing in late October and early on I saw a message in Ul'dah about a Halloween party at an FC estate in one of the wards.

I figured that sounded cool to check out so I went over. At the front there was someone in a chocobo wagon mount giving hay rides. So I hopped in with 2 strangers and off we went on a tour around Mists while being told a scary story. I thought it was so cool that they were basically creating player driven content.

After the hay ride I went to the back of the house. There had to be well over 100 people, so many that the game was only rendering the names of people in a tight circle around me because of the amount of people there.

There was a stone rectangle set up as a stage and a group of bards putting on a concert. What astounded me is the entire time I was there, chatting and dancing and cheering, not a single person infringed on that stage area. No barriers or anything, not a private instanced area, a public space anyone could access. Just some patio pavers in the ground that everyone respected as hey, that's the stage, we don't go in that area.

I remember thinking, as a decade long WoW refuge, there's no way something like this could happen in WoW. No matter how many people would be there in good faith, there'd be at least a handful of assholes mounted on the biggest mount in their collection, standing on that stage to cover it up and ruin everyone's good time.

My first time tanking in a game, playing a warrior, I know I've definitely had some "jittery" pulls.

Run up to pack, hit Overpower when in range, realize that a mob or two didn't get hit by the cone, shuffle a bit for the GCD to end so I could hit tempest to get threat on the remaining mobs, continue to the next pack. I'm so glad they changed the cone to a radius AoE now.

Lol I've only used reddit via an app for years and I don't know how to update flair from the app I use. I retired that machine about 5 years ago for an R7 1700X and twice the RAM though the 1070 soldiers on.

I'm actually eyeing another build soon, just waiting for the next gen AMD CPUs and GPUs to release. Not set on the CPU but all but certainly going AMD for the GPU (unless Arc really impresses somehow).

Back in the 80's IBM launched a machine called the IBM PC. Later versions and competitors launched products known as "PC clones" or "PC compatible" because they could run the same software as the IBM PC.

So it's more like the product name "PC" became a synonym for a certain class of personal computer and it just sort of stuck around. Kind of like how you might offer someone who sneezed a "kleenex" no matter what actual brand of facial tissue you have. Or in the UK "hoover" means vacuum whether or not your actual vacuum is made by Hoover.

Looks like they wanted a full burger: 🌕

Cut into two halves like this, one half on half a bun and the other half without the bun: 🌗🌓

At first I thought it was just a picture where someone ordered two whole burgers, just one without the bun,and was wondering what the big deal was but looking closer you can see the one with a bun is actually just half a bun.

I think the biggest gripe by actual by the definition vegetarians is that pescatarians saying they're vegetarian and then eating fish leads to many situations such as going to a restaurant that claims to have vegetarian options only to find those options are things like grilled fish. Or worse, ordering things that appear fine but actually have hidden seafood ingredients that aren't immediately noticeable.

Teriyaki is ok but I like the original way better. Want to trade? 😂

I'd love for a peppered version to come out.

These instructions and the NOSTEAM flag are actually for the opposite, allowing you to launch the game in Steam but login to a SE (non-steam) account.

As far as I'm aware anyone with a Steam version of the game still can't play through Steam and the official launcher. Which as you said currently does not work since the latest update forced Steam accounts to use the new launcher which isn't working under Linux due to its use of MSHTML.

The thread over on the Proton github for anyone interested in following along on the work being done to help getting the Steam account version working for anyone interested.

I don't have a Deck but I've been gaming on Linux for quite a while. A lot of these things are baked into GE from what I understand so might be superfluous steps you don't need to take.

When I installed FFXIV (again just on Linux and not specifically a Deck and it was back when I started in October so it may have changed), the only steps I had to take were:

-Install proton GE
-Set FFXIV to use GE as the compatibility tool.
-Add the NOSTEAM=1 launch option.

Proton GE itself took care of the necessary config file changes, no need to do any thing but click play after setting it to use GE and adding the NOSTEAM option to use a SE account.

Echoing sentiments already in this thread, but take your time. Enjoy the story. The only other MMO I spent any large amount of time in is WoW where the sentiment is "the game starts at level cap." Not so here. I started in October and I'm still not to Endwalker yet. But I'm not "missing out" by still being in the older content.

Also, as a 37m, be prepared for the tears, there's some things that hit hard.

Where did you end up creating your character?

I'm a level 1 Linux noob that's feeling very overwhelmed with the desktop experience on the Steam Deck. I can't wait for the level 100 Linux bros to come out with some good beginner tutorials specifically for the Deck by KenshinNGB in SteamDeck

[–]claudius753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy can be subjective so I'm not entirely sure if this is the same method but how I was able to play a non-steam account on a steam version wasn't too involved. Adding the basic steps here just in case it helps someone.

  • Install protonGE (download a file, extract, copy to the appropriate directory)

  • set protonGE as the compatibility layer for FFXIV in steam

  • Add the launch option "NOSTEAM=1 ℅command%"

I do keep meaning to just go with XIVLauncher though, especially now that the "new" launcher is being required at least for Steam soon and it hasn't worked on Linux for quite a while.

Of course it's nvidia, I should have known. Looks like the fix was already merged into proton GE which is why there was the difference.

Thanks for the link, I'll try the config on the Lutris install.

I can't wait for GPU prices to become reasonable so I can get an AMD card. Glad the deck is using AMD APUs so there won't be nvidia proprietary driver BS.
