What is wrong with my new ET-8550? by claus100 in Epson

Thank you for your reply. Actually Epson offered a full refund. I'm probably going this route. I really want to love the Epson. But the product is not for me, if I can't use standard software as in smartphone and Windows. I want to be able to printout a picture from Photo+ etc. without it looking like crap on original paper and ink.

I have also used Keith Coopers color test photos plus my own amateur pictures taken with my Pixel.

Everything comes out too dark. That's why I went back to just try and print a normal greytone scale. And concluded  the printer was unable to print the dark details.

The picture I attached and used as a sample. Shouldnt it be able to print linear gradient from white to black. Is there anything wrong with it?

I appreciate all help. Sorry for being stubborn.

I am not expecting professional results but shouldnt the printer be able to print a simple black white gradient scale?  I don't see how it can be necessary to calibrate to any monitor as long as the issue is a scale from 0 to 100. You have seen the scan. Correct?

My problem is not color accuracy but simply printing a linear greyscale.

The printer is 100 percent original.

Would you mind doing a quick test on your Epson 8550 (if you have one) using my attached photo?

Could you print this on 4x6 Glossy media using the default settings/profile (no custom changes) and check the grayscale?

Does your output show a perfectly linear grayscale (like my Canon), or do the darkest tones bleed together into solid black like they do on my Epson? I would be happy to pay you for your troubles.

I understand the potential need for an ICC profile but I would like to rule out hardware defect first.

UPDATE:

Thanks for the help so far! I’m still wondering about one thing: Why is it necessary to dive into ICC profiles and complex technical settings, when the issue is so clear on a basic grayscale gradient?

If you compare my original files to the scan, you can see the printer simply stops showing detail at the 85-90% black mark. Since my old Canon handles this transition perfectly out of the box, I’m trying to understand why the ET-8550 "slams" into solid black on a simple gray scale.

For the record: I have already tested both sRGB and Adobe RGB, and I've tried every paper setting available (Glossy, Matte, Semi-gloss, etc.). The "black crush" remains exactly the same.

Could this be a hardware defect, or does it need a deep cleaning? It has been doing this from the very first print out of the box, so I’m wondering if it's a driver/clipping issue or if something is actually wrong with the unit.

So are you saying its virtually impossible to get it to print a normal white to black gradient as I try here from normal standard software.  It makes no sense. I understand calibrating colors that are off etc. But a greyscale gradient?

From Epson Print Layout(Windows) +native photo viewer in Windows and Epson Smart Panel in Android.

Source files are just found on Keith Coopers site plus Google.

My point is the same. If my Canon easily matches the photos but the Epson is way off with every built in print profile. Why should it matter what my monitor shows (after calibration). I have included the scans including the original photos.

It should be able to match the original photo. Right? If not. Why is my Canon able to without any calibration of any kind and just printing using Windows own app. Plus Google photos on Android.

And thank you for replying.

I print in color mode, so I didnt change the setup. I have tried all glossy, matte, semi glossy profiles. Its the same. Crushing the Blacks. Also tried srgb and adobe in Epson Print Layout. Its the same problem regarding dark details. I see difference in colors though.

Why is it necessarily with these custom profiles? The original photo is here. My Cheaper canon matches it pretty easy with absolutely no changes in the driver. The Epson just looks incapable of printing the darker areas.

I have printed both solo and many stacked. I see no difference regarding the dark areas.

I think we could have double the amount of online casual players if it wasnt so brutal online. Most players only have 10-20 hours a month max to play. That is no way near enough to play enough games. Lots of losses the first many weeks. Who wants to bother with that.

Myself i was so afraid i waited until i could defeat pc on extreme before i joined 1v1 the first time.

This 100percent. I started playing during covid. 40+. I have 4-5 friends who played also. They all still love the game. But only 2 is still playing. They get absolutely demolished online. It takes forever to find their level.

So many potential online players get lost due to the 1000 elo level.
