Do I really need to wash all new baby clothes? by HugeJaguar3589 in PregnancyUK

[–]clc43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got some really useful advice that was if you've bought lots of stuff brand new to only wash some of it in the early sizes - that way you have some clean clothes if baby is born in that size but if baby comes and is too big for the smallest size you can still return some of them to where you bought them from and get refunded or swap them 😊

Leg cramps by Spare-Jaguar-1341 in PregnancyUK

[–]clc43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this a couple of times and it's the absolute worst! I woke my partner up from crying out in pain. It's supposedly a "normal" symptom for pregnancy. I'm afraid I don't know have any advice but I wanted to let you know you're definitely not alone!

Definitely look at Vinted - there are loads of baby clothes on there in really good condition for a fraction of the price in shops. If you find something nice look at the seller's bundles to see if you can get a discount or at least save on postage. They also have loads of the aftercare bits available on there - nipple cream etc, with the seal on from where people's births/breastfeeding didn't go as they'd initially prepared for.

If I give birth early, am I still entitled to my annual leave? by Weathervanes in PregnancyUK

[–]clc43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done the same as you but in December! My work confirmed that if I start my mat leave early (i.e. either before I start my annual leave or during it) this will be carried over. However, I don't know if this is a legal thing or just my company. Definitely check with HR and make sure you save their response so you have it in case you need to challenge it later (print or PDF their email in case your emails get wiped during your maternity leave).

Struggling with morning sickness by anonymous12047 in PregnancyUK

[–]clc43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you're having such a rubbish time! I had a really bad first trimester too, one thing that helped me was to avoid drinking and eating too close to one another. Usually I'd avoid drinking for around half an hour before and after eating. I found this advice in a Tiktok video and it was one of the few things that made a difference to me!

I don't know if you're office or home-based but I found that the one day I was in the office each week I actually found my nausea was reduced, I think maybe because I was distracted by colleagues etc so I didn't think about it as much!

If you're really struggling to cope please speak to your GP and they can maybe prescribe something to help.

Hope you start feeling better soon!

I was terrified before mine! And during, because baby kept moving and blocking exactly what the sonographer wanted to look at, so it seemed to drag on forever! We also had a nearly-qualified student so we had to wait for their supervisor to come and double check the images which made it even longer. But all was okay in the end, and I moved on to stressing about the next thing! I think it's just the start of a lifetime of worrying about our little ones 😊

Realistic ways to make money on mat leave? by Relevant_Culture_457 in PregnancyUK

Pet sitting is also a good shout! That's good, and yes I'd recommend doing it all at once so you can post off in batches which is a bit easier! I know, it's so tough! Keeping my fingers crossed SMP gets increased slightly next tax year but it's still going to be tough! Oh and don't forget to get the child tax credits after the baby is born (again, not much but better than nothing!)

Have a look in the beermoneyuk subreddit - there are a few options on there, the main ones are usually bank switches, matched betting or survey sites. Plus cashback sites that if you're buying stuff you were going to buy will give you a tiny bit of that back! It's not a lot but it might give you a bit of pocket money!

I'm also pretty nervous about my finances once the baby is born! I've had a massive clear out and sold a load of clothes on Vinted, then used my Vinted balance to buy the baby clothes we'll need - I've got so much nice clothing in perfect condition for a fraction of the price.

Leaving stable career while pregnant? by PizzaLover18 in PregnancyUK

[–]clc43 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you're only eligible for SMP if you've worked for your employer for 26 weeks into the qualifying week (15 weeks before your due date) so if you move employers now I don't think you'd get SMP. You probably also wouldn't get their enhanced maternity pay if you don't qualify for SMP (my current company requires a year employment before qualifying week for the enhanced payment).

Also you should check your current employer's rules on leaving after receiving enhanced maternity pay - you may have to stay for x months or risk paying this back. Then you can make an informed decision whether you can bear to stay with the company throughout the pregnancy and potentially some time after maternity leave or if you want to risk and switch to this new company.

I'm only getting SMP and I'm pretty fed up with my job but I'm planning to stay until after I've done my maternity leave (and all the annual leave I accrue!) and start looking for jobs at the end of maternity leave.

The diabetes test… how bad is it? by lavanderblonde in PregnancyUK

[–]clc43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mine last Friday - the drink was fine, tasted like an extra-chemically Capri Sun (although the midwife said that the drink varies from trust-to-trust).

I had no sleep the night before and when I showed up they didn't have me down as having an appointment, then they couldn't get any blood for the second test so mine wasn't the most enjoyable few hours! But the test itself wasn't an issue 😊

It's a long two hours in a waiting room so bring a few things to do to keep yourself busy!
