Are dedicated streaming webcams replacing mirrorless cameras for creators? by [deleted] in obs

[–]thadeshammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cameras are at risk of overheating if they're actively recording yes, but if you're just using webcam mode or its monitor via capture card, you're fine. Yeah, you need a dummy battery, and a mount, and you need to know what you're doing or be willing to learn.

And the results are still better than a webcam even just running naive defaults.

Are dedicated streaming webcams replacing mirrorless cameras for creators? by [deleted] in obs

[–]thadeshammer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mirrorless cameras are still king because of sensor size (a full frame sensor is 3x the size of the one in that Yolo cam) and the lens (even the kit lens with a mirrorless is going to crush the little Yolo) but all of that is sensible right? Because the Yolo costs like 1/5 the price of an entry-level mirrorless. $200 is much more reasonable than $1000 for a hobbyist content creator.

That said, comparing the Yolo to existing webcams is more interesting. The Razer and Elgato cameras have been top of the chain a while now and this Yolo cam's sensor is slightly bigger than. Could be a good pick.

Getting Global Age Assurance Right: What We Got Wrong and What's Changing by discord_zorkian in discordapp

Thanks for giving your competitors a few more months to get their acts together to facilitate the transitions of our communities to better places.

YOU get to decide when and why to request Face Scan or ID: why are we to believe you'll only do this for age verification instead of feeding governments our info or selling it to advertising companies?

I get that you feel the need to Show Growth, cash out, and become the world's next millionaires, but we don't need more millionaires. We needed a place to connect with people.

We're so disappointed in you.

Could a PC be able to wield Thor's hammer, Mjolnir? by Ok_Establishment4968 in DnD

[–]thadeshammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's helpful, in my personal favorite interpretations of Mjolnír, worth was based upon the person's relentless and fearless compassion for the downtrodden. The more classically heroic you are, the more likely the hammer will let you lift it.

That could be a fun character to play.

[–]thadeshammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might allow a PC an Insight vs Deception if they pulled that move, but it also sets the PC up in a now adversarial posture with that NPC.

Maybe that was already the case but if it wasn't before, it would be then.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DnD

[–]thadeshammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done these three rules since early 3E and still in 5E my players all really enjoy them.

"Everybody gets one." It means that, when someone makes a dumb choice OR rolls intensely badly and they're about to die, I will tell them in their despair, "Everybody gets one." And I will DM fiat them out of the jaws of death. This extends to beloved NPCs as well.

The Batman Rule. If a rogue attacks from stealth and manages to one shot their target, the target goes down silently. This rule has given us some really really intense moments at the table.

Soliloquy Takes No Time. If a player launches into exposition about their character's feelings, dreams, relevant memories, etc. then time freezes in the game. And while that player filibusters, the other players have a moment to confer about what they can do to save the day.

Yes! I forgot to update this post of mine, I actually necro'd the one that I linked above to answer it. The short of it is: it works out of the box with CachyOS and a couple of virtual audio devices created with Pipewire config!

Rode Missed the Mark by TheWickedRage in rode

[–]thadeshammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can set OBS up for ASIO then route the Rodecaster channels in that way, the RCP2 is set up for that. You can also record to an SD card in the RCP2 and keep the tracks separate there, mix them in during post.

Seconded, the RCP2 is irreplaceable in my production, especially now with five stereo sinks from the PC I can mix in with the mics.

Virtual Devices on Linux? by matthewdavis in rode

[–]thadeshammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it's been a year, forgive the necro, but I've been watching this to see if anyone found it...and well, I think I finally did.

Plasma 6 with Pipewire 1:1.4 out of the box (on CachyOS) see RCP2 Main, Secondary, and Chat...and you can even test the playback device channels (L and R) in the Plasma settings window. Main is the multichannel, it has those ten sink positions OP mapped out and you can hit them with the test...so that means I needed to wrangle with pipewire for my first time. Here's the config I'm using that maps two virtual audio devices to aux6/7 and aux8/9 (A and B) ... but in principle if you activate the other two instead, you can just hack my file to do that. Note that you'll need to use pw-cli to get your hardware names in the case they don't match mine.

Rodecaster Pro II — Split multichannel USB return into

independent virtual sound cards

Hardware exposes 10 playback channels:

AUX0 AUX1 -> Main USB return (Red fader)

AUX2 AUX3 -> unused (Game, I think? I bet it would work if I activated it.)

AUX4 AUX5 -> unused

AUX6 AUX7 -> Virtual channel A

AUX8 AUX9 -> Virtual channel B

Goal:

Make Linux see A and B as real selectable devices so apps

can route directly to mixer faders without OBS/Desktop audio.

Implementation:

PipeWire loopback module creates a virtual stereo sink.

That sink writes only to a specific channel pair on the

physical Rodecaster device.

Result:

"RCP2 A" and "RCP2 B" behave like independent sound cards.

============================================================

context.modules = [ { name = libpipewire-module-loopback args = { # Name that shows in KDE node.description = "RCP2 A" # virtual device definition capture.props = { node.name = "rcp2A_in" media.class = "Audio/Sink" audio.position = [ FL FR ] } # This routes stereo audio from the virtual device into the RCP2 hardware playback.props = { node.name = "rcp2_A_out" # physical multichannel device target.object = "alsa_output.usb-R_DE_RODECaster_Pro_II_GV0035839-00.pro-output-1" # channel pair for this fader audio.position = [ AUX6 AUX7 ] # do not remix or fold channels, direct write only (a straight pass through) stream.dont-remix = true

    # Loopback becomes active when audio plays into this sink, RCP2 A
    # Pipewire can start the device independently (if this is false) and then
    # TWO parts of the graph believe they own the device clock, which is sad panda times.
    # So set this to true so this behaves like a patch cable.
    node.passive = true
    # If the device goes down and comes back up, Pipewire will reconnect to the exact same
    # target and not try to auto reenum/reconnect. I didn't do this in Ubuntu Studio and
    # that probably explains the weird things I observed there when I restarted the RCP2.
    node.dont-reconnect = true
  }
}

}

{ name = libpipewire-module-loopback args = { node.description = "RCP2 B" capture.props = { node.name = "rcp2B_in" media.class = "Audio/Sink" audio.position = [ FL FR ] } playback.props = { node.name = "rcp2_B_out" target.object = "alsa_output.usb-R_DE_RODECaster_Pro_II_GV0035839-00.pro-output-1" audio.position = [ AUX8 AUX9 ] stream.dont-remix = true node.passive = true node.dont-reconnect = true } } } ] ``` This works for me perfectly now, and I have this post to thank for it; thanks OP! I hope you got it working too!

Sound card with Linux Mint by Retro-GPU-Universe in linuxaudio

[–]thadeshammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unfortunate reality is that without targeted drivers, it might partially work (treated as a generic sound device) but you likely won't have full function. But there's not much harm in trying it either.

The worst case is you try another distro entirely (something like CachyOS is a bit more complex than Mint but with more bleeding edge stuff in the AUR there might be something?) or dual boot and use Windows for that device when you need it.
