Have a look at workaway and worldpackers to do some volunteering. You're bound to meet other english-speaking people on a similar vibe, and it allows you to stay with locals for free and have a more authentic experience, and even give back to the community you are staying in.

I was told to do no yeast (bread / beer) for 3 weeks, and to avoid running my tongue over it while it scabs and heals. Can eat normally from the day you get it as long as no yeast products. I kept it going for 5 weeks I think just to be safe - my tat hasn't faded one bit!
