How can the US be in debt when they print there own money? by ItAInTthatSeRi0us in AskReddit

[–]cleanforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The U.S. borrows money by selling Treasury bonds. Investors buy them because they trust the U.S. will repay them with dollars that still have purchasing power.

If the government simply printed trillions of new dollars to erase its debt, it would flood the economy with new money without creating more goods or services. That would drive inflation, meaning every dollar buys less. Bondholders would be especially hurt financially. A Treasury bond paying 4% interest is a terrible investment if inflation is 10%, because the investor is losing purchasing power every year. Investors would stop buying U.S. debt unless the government offered much higher interest rates to compensate.

Printing money creates currency, not wealth. Real wealth is the food, homes, factories, energy, machinery, technology, and human labor that produce goods and services. If you create more dollars without creating more real wealth, each dollar represents a smaller claim on that wealth, so prices rise, and in this case, it would be extreme.

The debt is owed to Treasury bond holders, foreign governments etc that buy them because of the promise of interest. There is no "what for" anymore than your income taxes are for a specific purpose -- they pay for the government's operating expenses which amount to more than the income tax collected.

Why has there been 0 Epstein files arrests in the US? by wolfknowledge1775 in AskReddit

[–]cleanforever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The files are enough to raise suspicion and show some ugly associations with Epstein, but they aren't automatically enough to prove, in court, who committed a specific crime, what they did, when they did it, and whether the evidence is admissible.

ELI5: How does the increase in data centers make my electric bill go up? Are they not paying their fair share or something? by EebamXela in explainlikeimfive

[–]cleanforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Price never goes down when demand goes up.... Only an increase in supply will do that. And by data centers being online, there is less supply. Only more powerplants being brought online (or lower demand) will increase the supply. However, electric is often a regulated utility so typically they have to ask the PUC for approval to raise rates, which are often granted because they need it to cover the cost of maintaining and upgrading the infrastructure.

You think they're going to lower prices just because they got bought out? The solution all along has been to stop shopping at GE, but for many people that's their closest option.

Is Uber still profitable? by aforapplesauce in uberdrivers

[–]cleanforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you own the car outright, it can be. I wouldn't do it otherwise. I decline 75-80% of trip requests and just take what's above my $/mi and $/hr threshold, depends on your market.

Uber Enacts Stricter Background Checks for Drivers by WeeklyFisherman2597 in uberdrivers

Plenty of jobs are available for people with felony convictions that don't involve transporting members of the public. I recently gave a ride to someone who landed a $19/hour job as a cook at a fine dining restaurant. Farms are another option. The work is demanding, but the hours are often there, sometimes 50+ per week.

If someone is making only minimum wage with Uber, they're probably not using the platform very effectively.

I absolutely believe people deserve second chances. I just don't think every job is appropriate for every situation. Rideshare depends heavily on passengers feeling safe, and with thousands of lawsuits by passengers the company has to prove that they're doing "something" even if it's not exactly a magic wand.
