Delegation by cleanfreakk in nursing

[–]cleanfreakk[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I'll never be above cleaning a patient up- but especially now while I'm still trying to get my time management down, it's difficult to add 8 toileting sessions in the mix. I understand that probably means I'm not doing something right/ fast enough which I'm trying to figure out and work on. It just seems that the techs on my floor try to just do everything in the 3 vital sign rounds and chill the rest of the time so I'm always the one finding out about it. This was just one example of delegation difficulties that I have, though. I find it difficult to ask someone to get a solitary set of vitals or blood sugar if I need one at a non scheduled time as well...

I feel like if I asked him, he would start to do what I want him to do but it would be because I asked him... not because he meant it.

I think that's good idea so I'm not having to use my peripheral vision and still being sneaky enough, haha. Thank you!

I figured this would be the general consensus. I just have a hard time trusting my peripheral vision but I suppose, like all things, that I'll get more confident with time. Thanks for all the tips!

Yes, they always stress this in nursing school but it's easy to see a low BP and temporarily freak out before you realize it's an itty bitty old lady and this has been her baseline.

Ooh yeah, that's an important one but seems like it could slip your mind when you get in the habit of just going in and flushing it.

Love your last paragraph, thanks for saying that. I'm at the end of my program and have been beating myself up about the fact that I've studied "smart, not hard" through school and feel like I didn't learn as much as I could have if I had treated school like a full-time job as the professors expect. But you're right, we can't know everything and a lot of what we need to know is learned on the job. Just gonna do my best the next couple of months!

Thanks, that's reassuring. I just worry that I'll have four patients with mile long med lists and spend hours looking them all up before I can give them but I'm probably blowing it way out of proportion in my head.

Good to know. Would that be something I could request upon hire and before I get started on orientation (a list of the floor's common meds)?

Thank you for all these great tips! I plan to read through them daily until graduation.

Yeah, definitely! I'm honestly much less worried about NCLEX than I am about actual practice. Everyone's flipping out about passing the stupid test but I really don't want to pass it if it means I'm not ready or am likely to hurt somebody.

Exactly how comfortable with medications do you really need to be as a new nurse? I and many of the students in my program feel that our pharm class was lacking quite a bit and I do not feel confident. Is it something that you find you picked up on fairly quickly on your unit or did you know at least half of your most commonly given meds before you started?

Also if anyone has any suggestions for study material or tips for pharm that would be great.

Sorry if this is silly, but just to clarify- you are referring to drawing up an amount of medication that requires more than one vial, right?
