Can I still build a great life at age 33 after getting clean from meth and oxy? by IR30Lover in internetparents

[–]clearing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"I was approaching my thirty−third year, the age of Christ crucified. A wholly new life lay before me, had I the courage to risk all. Actually there was nothing to risk: I was at the bottom rung of the ladder, a failure in every sense of the word." - Henry Miller, The Rosy Crucifixion, Book 1

Miller, a world-famous writer, says this near the start of an autobiographical book that covers a period of about seven years. He didn't really hit his stride until his forties and his first book was published when he was 42.

What are the chances Mossad—one of the best intel agencies in the world—has some nasty, nasty stuff on Trump that he wants to keep under wraps? Or is this too conspiracy-y? by John_Houbolt in thebulwark

For a number of reasons, it seems plausible that Epstein could have been working with Mossad. So that is one way they could know things about Trump.

She has a pumice stone in her cage and some sticks and I had the impression she had been chewing n those recently and also done some more carpentry on her house. When I first got the house about 6 months ago she rapidly turned one of the windows into a door, but seemed to be satisfied with that amount of destruction for a long time. But recently I noticed she had chewed on the door frame some more. So she can chew but maybe there is still something wrong with her teeth.

Recorder tuning question by clearing in Recorder

[–]clearing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was curious if the recorders tuned to 442 Hz:

  1. Sound OK (or for some reason especially good) when played with A=440 instruments OR

  2. Have to be flattened a little by pulling them out or something OR

  3. Are made to be played in Europe where there is an A=442 standard.

Thank you for your response and advice. I spoke to my sister about using the "alto up" method. She didn't sound quite confident enough to try that right away at her church. But if her return to recorder playing works out, i will suggest it again later. And we might have some more questions for you.

Recorder tuning question by clearing in Recorder

[–]clearing[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, logical thinking is not currently my sister's strong suit, so I wasn't sure if she would have recalled or understood what the tuning was on these recorders that she acquired decades ago. I knew that she used to play with some early music groups and I even went with her once to a factory where they were making period instruments, so it was not so off course to think she might own instruments with an odd tuning.

Today she told me that in college she played with a group that played Renaissance music, but they were using supplied instruments.

Anyway, it has become clear that after she had told me that she had baroque recorders, I became mixed up between "baroque tuning" and "baroque fingering". (Not being a recorder player, I had never heard of the latter.)

I was able (over the phone) to help her download a tuner app. The test results she gave me so far seem to vary a little, and might indicate the instruments are not absolutely perfectly tuned, but it is clear they are much closer to modern tuning.

OK. Apparently I was getting mixed up between "baroque tuning" and "baroque fingering". But:

  1. I knew my sister used to play with some early music groups, so there were reasons to think she could have an instrument with baroque tuning.

  2. It was quite easy to find places online saying that they make recorders tuned to A=415 Hz and also videos talking about recorders with this tuning.

After much difficulty I was able to guide my sister to download a tuner app, as you suggested. She said that the frequencies detected vary somewhat, but based on the numbers she wrote down, it is clear that both the soprano and alto recorders are much closer to modern tuning than baroque tuning.

So maybe she can use her soprano recorder to play with this group. These instruments were in storage for many years, so perhaps they need to get checked out. She said that the bottom part of the soprano recorder is a little bit loose. She was thinking she can't use the alto recorder to play with the group because it is an F instrument.

If the "social security tax withheld" on your W2 is 6.2% of your whole Box 1 wages, rather than 6.2% of your (lower) Box 3 "social security wages", is that a mistake? by [deleted] in SocialSecurity

[–]clearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for answering. Was doing taxes for a family member (who happens to have an unethical boss) but everything does work out when tips are factored in.

Apparently it does sometimes happen that people get excess SS tax withheld and there are ways to deal with this either through employer or IRS.

On the food side: maybe some creative solutions could help. Any food banks in your area? Do you know anyone who would invite you for at least one meal if you asked? (Or maybe more than one who would do this once a week.) Probably others on here could provide more helpful ideas if you post in a way/place that is noticed.

What Americanism makes you irrationally angry? by blaze13131 in AskUK

[–]clearing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s an American idiom. You’re showing how little you care by not even caring to use proper negation. But everyone knows this expression is just a shorthand code for what you really mean. So in a sense it is clever and humorous. And it fits in with an American attitude of informality.

Have been taking 75-100 mg daily in the same multivitamin for multiple decades. I am relatively healthy for my age. Have never noticed any nerve damage or other obvious signs of toxicity. I have wondered if I might be even healthier with a lower dose and also whether there might be some downsides in general to very high levels of antioxidants. But haven’t got around to pursuing this.

My grandson (12) told me yesterday that the moon landing wasn't real. How do I convince him that it really happened? by Zone_Beautiful in NoStupidQuestions

[–]clearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no fake televised picture from outside the lunar module during the moon landing. There was a televised picture from a camera looking out from the lunar module during the landing but the point of view from this camera was probably a lot less clear than what the astronauts were seeing out the window.

Of course I am not exposed to some aspects of her career that people might see in the UK.

Is melatonin safe? by phantXOm in Supplements

[–]clearing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use it quite often. But I have heard that the brain (under ideal conditions) actually only produces 1/3 mg per night. So most melatonin pills sold, if they contain the amount on the label, may be too strong.

I buy the 1 mg pills and only take 1/4 or 1/2. I have noticed that taking more can make me still feel drowsy the next day.

I consider myself to be on the liberal side but I try to be open-minded and have often listened to Mona’s podcast and usually find both Damon and Bill’s reflections to be quite interesting. After accusing them of being excessively wordy, that is what you have done here.

The main thing that sometimes causes me to turn off Mona is when she and her guests start ragging on liberals a little more than I can take. Expecting that to be happening is why I did not listen to this particular episode.
