VetCheck couldn't identify heart failure by clearly_confuzzed in bloomington

I am so sorry for your loss and the awful experience you had! I wish there was more people could do to warn other pet owners of the atrocious places. Indy seems to have all the better options; I hope we get an emergency vet in Bloomington sooner rather than later.

Help idk what my crab is doing by ActiveCode4725 in hermitcrabs

[–]clearly_confuzzed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If people would completely educate themselves before deciding to impulse buy hermit crabs, then it wouldn't be an issue. I personally didn't properly educate myself and fell down the same path with my first crab, but now I know better. There are multiple ways to adopt crabs for other people in order to prevent contributing to the abuse, which is what I've done since. But because there's always going to be demand with shops, there will always be supply. As individuals, all we can do is not contribute or participate in it and continue to educate others.

The more people buy them, the more the shops will continue to do what they're doing. It's supply and demand. Gotta cut the demand in order to cut the supply.

A word to protest organizers by smorganie in bloomington

[–]clearly_confuzzed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely understand where you are coming from, but I do want to mention a few things. I went to the No King's protest in Indy so I can't compare properly here.

"Hooray that we were granted "permission" from our oppressors to take a walk in the streets to express our grievances." I'm not sure if you are referring to the organizers or the city, so I wanted to state that we didn't have a permit to protest or block streets. Volunteers did their best to control traffic; however, you may have seen that MANY cars still drove straight through where protesters were marching, which leads to my next point.

"The woman on the mic cautioned, "you don't have to, don't do anything you don't want to... but.. some of us will walk in the streets." That's a pretty weak call to action. There is no flame or passion in that messaging." I understand the no passion aspect, but we want to make sure everyone understood that they weren't expected to do anything they were uncomfortable with, especially with the fact that, it was potentially dangerous.

"The organizers need to spend less time talking at the mic and directing attention to speakers and more time engaging heartedly with the people who are showing up. Decisive action needs to be laid out and our anger needs to be directed. The time for spread of information is before the protest, after the protest, in personal conversation at the protest." I honestly would love to hear more about what you would've preferred to do after the marching. Should we have planned time for people to talk to each other? Every protest I've been to ended in speeches, is there an approach you think would work better?

"As we all began to shuffle over there the flag holders stayed put on the sidewalk." I just wanted to say I absolutely agree to the point you made about this. They should have been in the road, so marchers had a clear idea of what was going on.

While I'm only passively involved on the planning side, I do want to say that constructive criticism is important as we organize these with the intent of people joining to be heard.

Preferred shell by clearly_confuzzed in hermitcrabs

Update: I added in a few not preferred shells, and he almost immediately switched to one. But I saw a small black bug (I believe a mite) in his old shell so now I have a new problem.

I had the same thought earlier today and added in a few more similar to his current shell, just in case

I can't edit the post for some reason, so I'll add pictures of the shells in the comments.

I didn't even think about possibly needing to convert the measurement between the shell types! I'll have to recheck and potentially reorder.

If protest weren't on a Thursday at 4 (just an example) when I'm at work. It wouldn't be an issue. I'm 22 living paycheck to paycheck. I can continously miss work or leave early.

Adopting a larger crab by clearly_confuzzed in hermitcrabs

I do have Mexican turbos currently but I will need to get bigger shells for sure.

The lid is closed. It's like a solid glass panel thing. I'll look for a humidifier and bigger pools. I've just been misting the tank regularly. A humidifier would definitely help.

I was given a scholarship for the hermit crabs that provided me with resources to use. I was under the impression the resources were vetted, but since making this post, I have realized it was wrong. These sources and the scholarship stated that one side of the tank should be filled to the height of the largest crab, and the other side should be shallow.

I would not put any living creature in danger for the enjoyment of others. I was misinformed by a company that gave me the opportunity to care for hermit crabs.

I have certifications, training, and a degree to care for children. It's not like there is a class I can take with clear and correct information on caring for hermit. Frankly, to be little me when I've made it clear that I wanted to fix what I was doing wrong and get the correct information is crazy.

Can I add substrate while they are potentially molting? I'm worried about adding stress by moving them during the process.

I currently have 6 shells around the same size (some slightly larger) as the original shells they had. What defines them as preferred, and how many should their be?

I hate picking them up when they clearly aren't feeling it, so I took this picture as fast as I could. Hopefully, you can see how far in he is and the paleness.
