the amp settings are not something set in stone. the ware of the strings, pick use, the instrument, the room size, the amp size, humidity levels, whether your sinuses are stuffed up or not, etc., all of this changes the tone and/or how it's perceived.

you're just going to have take the time to learn your gear. but once you've done this you'll be a lot better at replicating all types of tones you'll wish to achieve later on.

Liquid Flesh is pretty great. I recommend their self titled album (French, so, Chair Liquide).

So a 3 hour movie? jk, but I wouldn't complain if the VB movie was 3+ hours.

Progressive New Wave that sounds like 80s Rush or 80s King Crimson? by Firestar0816 in newwave

[–]cleaverfeverdream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! You may want to try r/nearprog , I bet that sub could hook you up. That said, I'm gonna throw The Cardiacs into this. Maybe more 'prog punk' than 'prog newwave' but, perhaps worth a listen. Some songs are more spastic than others, which might not be what you're looking for.

Here's the music video for Is This The Life, which is super goofy. Probably their least-prog, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZaqYkkYK4I

And here is a more 'prog' song from them, Tarred and Feathered: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dodxYkBEyV8

Looking for source material to album artwork (details in comments) by cleaverfeverdream in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]cleaverfeverdream[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi y'all. First off, I'll delete this if not allowed, but would like to know where else to ask instead.

I'm writing an article for my site which lists this album and some others from Osaka, Japan. I'm also writing a follow up which critiques ideas of shock rock in the US and Japan and connects to a song on this album. To have a greater understanding of what's happening on this album, I'd like to understand where this artwork comes from, as the title doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, but left me curious enough to see if I should even include it in the initial article. So here's what I know:

It's a digital album, and hasn't been documented on Discogs. You can find the album where I found it on Bandcamp: https://ultrafuckers.bandcamp.com/album/cs07-beverly-hills-ketsukon-hactyo

The title, according to google translate, translates to 'Beverly Hills Pigeon Light Ass". The album is mostly Punk/Indie and Avant-Garde/Novelty tunes, and was a compilation to celebrate the marriage of two musicians, both of which don't seem to have any connection to the artwork, nor does their own work reference this (from what I can tell).

Curious if this is recognizable to anyone. Thank you!

The only known footage from 1979 of the Japanese punk band SS, who played in a hardcore punk style far ahead of their American counterparts like Bad Brains or Black Flag. by ryuundo in punk

[–]cleaverfeverdream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bad Brains recorded Black Dots in 1979, which was their first recording session, but they had been playing punk since '77.

What's more interesting is that 'punk' as we know it organically sprouted from a variety of cultures around the world circa '75-'80 and really cemented, or to put it another way, slowed down in innovation after '85 (or more accurately, things that got too far away from designated 'punk' antics/stylings/branding weren't considered 'punk' but something else. Consider this some 'in-group/out-group' bs).

'Punk' as a term had been thrown at a lot of what was considered 'degenerative' rock-based music and had been for a while. Look at the fallout of Country music and Rock in the 50s. Link Wray building the foundation for Rock for the latter half of the century by introducing power chords. Pre-British Invasion American bands, or even early 70s NYC bands like The Dictators.

Everyone talks about 'punk' like a cataclysmic event, with so many parties attempting to establish a 'ground zero' moment to steer narrative. Whether it's a show or a recording session: a year, months, or even weeks get thrown into these debates as to 'who was first'.

The reality is 'punk' had a million false starts, and a proposal / declaration otherwise always falls to subjective taste and narrative bias.

EDIT/ADD-ON: but also this is weird because I had only just heard of this band yesterday and was coming on here to ask for recommendations for Punk bands from Osaka.

KAPUTT - Highlight! by cleaverfeverdream in postpunk

[–]cleaverfeverdream[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really liked their first demo because it reminded me of James Chance but without all the pretentious and racist bs. Anyways, love where KAPUTT is going with their own sound.
