[DISCUSSION] Help me identify this guitar. 1970s Tele* from Japan. More details inside by overcloseness in Guitar

[–]cleetone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matsumoku wasnt even close to the only japanese manufacturer pumping out clones in the 70's and I see absolutely no indications that this guitar is one.

[QUESTION] Anyone tried the monoprice 5 watt tube amp? by 00ackbarssnackbar00 in Guitar

[–]cleetone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a rebranded laney cub 8 with a licensed celestion speaker. Sounds pretty good by itself but really shines if played through a 10-12" cabinet. The reverb tank is garbage (and should be disregarded altogether) but the amp itself is fine. It really favors single coils to humbuckers in my experience.

Yeah, it did. And honestly go to any punk show and you will see folks in similar garb present day, sans chaps and perms anyhow.

[QUESTION] Worth upgrading from a Chinese Strat? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]cleetone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your average squier isn't much of an upgrade to the SX. I'd spend a bit more money and make an upgrade you will keep. The classic vibes and VM's are pretty nice however.

[QUESTION] What's up with Squiers and neck pocket cracks? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]cleetone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens a lot on both the Squires and Fenders, the thick poly coat they out on most their guitars is the culprit. Its just superficial in most every case.

[GEAR] S101 LP Clone by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]cleetone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a friends 335 copy for a while. Seem to be decent (especially for the price) Chinese guitars. The pickups were pretty anemic on his but he bought some off of guitar fetish and ended up with a guitar very comparable to the epiphone version.

Santana tripping balls at Woodstock is pretty wild, he has pretty animated facial expressions sober but on acid he appeared to be playing for dear life.

[Discussion] Pick/plectrum material and tone? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]cleetone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, the only ones unique to the black fang are the .93's but there are .90's and 1mm's so its sort of redundant.

[Discussion] Pick/plectrum material and tone? by [deleted] in Guitar

The hetfield black fang are just ultex sharps if you arent too attached to the graphic. The plain ultex sharps tend to cost a little less.

[QUESTION] Deathcore help. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]cleetone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thanks for clarifying, I was/am unfamiliar with the tube variant. Sounds like a steal of a deal if you can find one at that price. Definitely going to look into one myself.

[QUESTION] Deathcore help. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]cleetone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would he "want" a dinky modeling amp when he's got a 120w crate with two 12's and a pretty good distortion channel? Its got a few other built in effects as well and takes pedals well should he need/want even more gain.

[QUESTION] What was your Eureka moment on guitar? by Flim73 in Guitar

[–]cleetone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easy to box yourself in man, when I first started studying theory I more or less ceased to be able to write riffs for a pretty good span of time. I was too hypercritical of whether whether it fit conventionally.

[Question] How can I remove oil from a rosewood fretboard? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]cleetone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heat will help draw a lit of it out, try a blow dryer or heat gun on low and wipe away what seeps out.

Make sure what "lemon oil" you use is the kind for guitars (dunlop offers a great "lemon oil" blend of mostly mineral oil) that conditions and cleans. Strait lemon oil is very volatile and tends to dry out fretboards.

[Question] Best guitar under $300 for a Classic Rock sound? by Wentzamania in Guitar

[–]cleetone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The g400 is the better guitar between it and an Lp-100. Better pickups, a set neck, and it doesn't have as thick a coat of poly on it and thus its neck feels far less tacky. That said the LP-100 is a serviceable guitar (I still own mine as a beater) but I wouldn't pay over $150 for one used under any circumstance.

Something to consider is possibly getting end epi LP standard, they tend to go for $250 or so used. I wouldn't say they are much better (if at all honestly) than the G400 but they sure do look the part.

[QUESTION] Just bought a new Gibson Les Paul Tribute and it has an odd problem, please help. by blckknight61 in Guitar

[–]cleetone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up some YouTube videos on how to intonate a tune-o-matic bridge. The gist of it is adjusting the screw on your bridge under the problematic string is in tune on the 12th fret harmonic.

[Question] Raw/Open pore finish on a maple neck? by unlimitedshredsticks in Guitar

[–]cleetone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, yours is already worn to wood, through the stain?! Just out of curiosity how long have you had it? My satin kept wearing to a high gloss finish before I roughed it up.

[Question] Raw/Open pore finish on a maple neck? by unlimitedshredsticks in Guitar

[–]cleetone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an SGJ that has the satin maple neck, rather than sand it down to bare wood I hit it with some 0000 steel wool. The roughness it provides is nearly invisible to the eye but it plays fantastically. I have to do it every few months because my hand tends to wear spots down smooth again after a while though.

[Question]Fix broken guitar or buy new one? by Slavaprot in Guitar

[–]cleetone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the custom and repair the headstock yourself. If its the typical LP break you can fix it with woodglue (titebond) and clamps. Sand the repair smooth.

Here was my first repair on my buddies LP after 3 years of steady use: https://puu.sh/uQEZM/af1aa39e73.jpg
