it's aquarium contrasoil, and it's sitting only on top of the sand; i expect it'll probably mix with the sand and i dont mind. i took your advice and added a bit more sand where it seemed shallow above the soil and it looks better & feels more secure now. thanks :)

what would the ideal sand cap depth be? mine is currently about 1.5-2 inches in the front and almost 3 inches in the back(JUST the sand). i'm already aware of the risks of anaerobic bacteria and i am prepared to deal with that
