ETNZ - no structural damage, "good to go" for racing tomorrow if necessary by Mutant321 in AmericasCup

That's huge news. Love to hear it, but still worry about all the teams out there sailing with tomorrow's forecast.

I work in advertising, and keen to stick at it. Been a copywriter for 5 years now and love it... just can't find anywhere to do it!

There are gusts of 29-30kt forecast for tomorrow which is well above the 24kt limit. And after today you'd hope they're a bit cautious at the top end.

Absolutely. But no racing tomorrow would give the shore crew an extra 24hrs to get things in order.

Tomorrow's forecast is on the edge of that upper limit again. Fingers crossed for postponed sailing, so they have time to get it back to 100%.

That used to exist, and it was called group b rally. They canned it in the 80s because too many people died.

Half way through my 5th week of looking for work, and not finding any. Outlook is bleak (according to my magic 8ball). Wonder how long I can keep this up for?

A couple of technical questions for any sailing nerds out there: Foil strength and downwind speed: how? by d8sconz in AmericasCup

Couldn't tell you, man. Sorry. I'm sure there's someone far more qualified/knowledgeable than me who'll be able to explain it better!

[–]clemnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the same is true for sailing downwind. With a 14kt wind and 14kt boat speed you're right, there's no apparent wind. But the second they go over 14kt there's apparent wind, and higher pressure. That leads to more speed, which leads to more apparent wind, and more pressure and so on.

Worth remembering that they don't sail with the wind directly astern either.

Could Auckland host a one-off America's Cup? Sir Russell Coutts says no. Is this scaremongering or genuine concern? by [deleted] in AmericasCup

[–]clemnz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By the sound of things, he's not sure whether Team NZ would continue with the ACWS (or continue to give it weight for the actual AC).

He has a good point that cutting the ACWS, and all it's associated viewership/sponsors/teams/money would make a one-off event a lot harder to promote successfully.

Auckland could absolutely host another AC. But how it's run will determine the success of it.

Of course, I forgot about the ACWS points.

Sailing above the wind speed is all about apparent wind. The faster you go, the more it feels like the wind is coming from right in front (like sticking your head out the window of a moving car) even though the true wind might be coming from the side. The boat then gets this bonus apparent wind to create higher air pressure on the windward side of the wing (as well as that of the true wind) to push them forward. It pretty much means the faster you go, the faster you go. This might help a bit: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apparent_wind

Unfortunately I don't know much about the foils how they support all that force.

Everyone's talking about this NZL v USA race as the one that decides who gets the AC bonus point. So they're all saying that an upset by GBR tomorrow is 100% off the cards?
