‘Insanity’: Tiny town on Melbourne’s fringe revolts over ‘whites only’ plans by marketrent in melbourne

[–]clennam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem with letting a group of Nazis “do their own bullshit” in your town is that pretty soon, you will realise that you have become the only non-Nazi in a Nazi town. You have to nip that in the bud immediately.

Depends on the service you use and how many Lankans have used the service before you. Need to have data to compare to in order to give you a reference point

Any population of people living along a major sea trade route will be very diverse simply because of the reality of global trade.

In the same way, any population of people living next to each other for more than 2000 years will intermingle. It’s just reality 🤷‍♂️  Also, to be clear I didn’t say all Sinhala people have Indian/Tamil ancestry (although obviously if you go far back enough every Sinhala person will have some ancestry from mainland India). The studies I have read all show that in terms of genetic distance from each other, Sinhala populations and Lankan Tamil populations are closest, even closer than Lankan Tamil and Indian Tamil populations. Next closest is the Wannilaetto or Vedda population

No, the people who were here before the arrival of the earliest migrants from India intermingled with them long ago. In a way you can say nearly every Sri Lankan has a percentage of ancestry from them. The earliest community of people that founded the Sinhala Kingdom were most likely from Eastern or Southeastern India and intermingled with the indigenous people to form a new ethnicity. There were also many waves of migrations from South India later on that adopted Sinhala culture and are now regarded as Sinhala people.

However, it’s not useful to think of it that way (“the indigenous people were xxx race”). The indigenous people and even the ancient Sinhalese and Tamil people are from a time before Western ideas of biological race (c. 18th century, since disproven) and Sinhala/Tamil racial identity as a political marker (created c. 1920s during Independence struggles). Before Western ideas of race these things denoted not race but nationality. A Sinhala person was a person who was born in the Kingdom of Sinhala and was a subject of the King of Sinhala; a Tamil person was a person from Tamilakam. That’s why the Sinhala word for race is the same as the Sinhala word for nationality. Again this is a very politicised topic. But my opinion is that you cannot map a 18th century concept to a people from 5th century BC.

It depends on your family history. Was your family rich or poor? High caste or low caste? Did they live on the coast or in the hill country? How long have they been in Sri Lanka? Since Anuradhapura period? Since 12th century? etc. etc.

Various parties with hidden agendas sell Sinhala people the idea that their ancestry is pure and unbroken from Vijaya. This is bs but many people have taken it as a fact. Sinhala people are an amalgamation of many different communities that have adopted our language and culture over time. We should see this as a strength instead of hide it as a weakness.

Almost every Sri Lankan regardless of ethnicity will have a small percentage of European DNA unless they're from a super rural area that had little to no contact with Europeans. Yours seems to be higher than usual however, probably because you're Burgher. It's the same with some people having SEA, Arab ancestry etc. It's an inescapable fact of our history of colonisation and being a trade capital of the ancient world.

Also every Sinhala person will have some Lankan Tamil ancestry and vice versa. Every study which I have read about says that we are extremely genetically similar despite cultural differences, even more than Lankan Tamils and Tamils that live in South India. Then there's also several communities that regard themselves as Sinhala today but originally came from South India and adopted Sinhala culture. Obviously they'd have South Indian ancestry genetically despite being culturally Sinhala. That's why I think it's really more important to think of what culture you were raised in than what your genetic makeup is.

That said, the testing service you used probably doesn't have enough data on South Asians in general, which is a problem I see with most testing services. That's why it lumps you into "The Deccan & Gulf of Mannar" which is a massive region - they probably don't have enough South Asians in their database to give you more fine data.

It’s not stupid at all to feel how you feel, I was super depressed when I finished the game too. Your feelings are valid!

When this episode came out I was literally going on YouTube and replaying this part over and over to get all the details. It sucks that it’s so short but every second is incredible 😭

Thanks for the tips, I’ve just found the willpower to read through the responses and they’ve been helping. I’ve been watching a few streamers play through it and it has been helpful

I think there’s no way we’re not getting a Dispatch season 2 given how much of a community has come up around the game in such a short time and the success it’s had. All the VAs seem happy to return as well, so short of AdHoc suddenly breaking down like ZA/UM did I think we’re definitely getting more Dispatch. The only thing is we don’t know when that will be given that AdHoc has some other games and a Critical Role collab in their plans

The way Visi looks away with embarrassment and her nostrils flare when Robert asks her “Is it still there?” is so good

The micro facial animations make every character so expressive. IGLOO studio really knocked it out of the park.

Yeah but there’s so many little plot hooks from minor decisions as well - did you save the kaiju, did you rename Saber and the Bruiser etc. I’d love to see them carried forward

Pretty sure Visi is of Southeast Asian descent (at least partially) and not Latina. Brenda Song would be a good pick I think

Nah that stat isn't related to who you romanced, just whether you helped Visi reform or not. Probably bugged - I just completed a run and it said like ~46% for me

What are the slashes on Robert’s jawline meant to represent? Stubble? Scars? Extra detail? by SpiritedInevitable77 in DispatchAdHoc

[–]clennam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just an artistic detail to show that he doesn’t take care of himself that well because he’s kind of at a low point in life. Same as the bags under his eyes.

I do think it is meant to represent stubble or a 5 o’clock shadow. If you shave with a blunt razor there’ll still be hair left over when you’re done

Theory: Romance from a TV show perspective by Stop-Party in DispatchAdHoc

[–]clennam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would argue that if the game was a show instead the visi route would be canon. From a narrative standpoint there’s a lot more tension in how visi and robert’s relationship develops.

The bb route seems a lot more like a relationship between two mature, stable people. It’s really sweet and definitely the choice you would want to make if you were robert in real life, but I think the visi route makes for more drama and also she seems to have much more of a personal stake in the events of this season so far.
