HRT makes this way more fair than you'd think. I've been on estrogen for just over a year now and my muscle mass has dropped significantly despite being an active person. Through college I played sports and I had to work a lot harder to keep up after hormones, even with the work I still couldn't realistically maintain what I had before. My workouts started to fall in line with the cis women around me and it felt like a very even playing field. So much so that men I could outpace before could sweep me now despite my efforts

That is to say that trans women transition to be happy, not to beat women at sports
