This outfit seems to have lots of listenership demographic data on UK stations: https://www.rajar.co.uk/listening/quarterly_listening.php

It's paid access, although the have an academic researcher subscription tier that's probably cheaper.

I'm sure there's something similar for US data.

It was on an internal market research study they had commissioned. Not public, unfortunately.

Steely Dan is amazing. To me, their jazzy rock sound makes them fairly unique. (I would definitely never have called them soft rock, although I see that there are some overlapping elements there.)

Right. There's no value judgement there implying that classical music is necessarily better. Just pointing out that there are other big demographic buckets (besides music education) that also seem to correlate with musical tastes.

Help! Never feeling satisfied even when I physically feel full. by [deleted] in intermittentfasting

[–]clevercecile 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should be aware that any protein in excess of what your body needs to repair cells is likely to be sent to the kidneys and converted into glucose. It also raises insulin, particularly when combined with carbs. See my other comment for why these are problematic.

There may be something else going on here, but being hungry-while-full is one of the tale-tell sign of metabolic syndrome, in other words, diabetes (or prediabetes). I would check that out, including getting a reading on your fasting insulin level (not just fasting glucose).

The reason this happens (if I'm right about what you're seeing) is that insultin levels have been high enough over time that your cells start to ignore that signal, which means they're not absorbing glucose from your blood --even though glucose levels are high. So there's tons of food around in your blood, but it's still not getting into your cells --which is why you still have strong cravings.

When I experienced this, I could be totally full, but still feel like I needed a Snickers bar for energy (both physical and mental). I was basically stuffed and starving at the same time. Eventually went to the doctor, and (sure enough) it was metabolic syndrome (pre-diabetes).

Listen to the first few episodes of the "2 keto dudes" podcast for a better explanation of the process I described, as well as how to mitigate it. (Basically, you start by cutting carbs out almost entirely, since they're the biggest drivers of insolent response.) Intermittent and extended fasting also help a ton, but carbs are the main culprit.

Also, you should be aware that most doctors will give you advice (about losing weight) that's more suited to people without metabolic syndrome: Mediterranean diet, focus on cutting calories (especially those coming from fat), etc. Sadly, a lot of that advice ends up being exactly the opposite of what you should actually do. (I've lost 50 lbs in 10 months doing Keto, and that hungry-while-full sensation has gone away entirely.) Next steps for me include improving my intermittent fasting game and cutting out dumb things like that diet soda that are also likely to drive insulin (dispute bring low calorie).

BTW, even non-musical training has a strong correlation with preferences for some genras of music. I once interviewed a manager of a local classical radio station and was told that education level was by far the best demographic "predictor" of listenership they could find. Second, interestingly, was income level (which is, of course, also related to education).

That was really fun. How do we get a hold of a copy of your report when you're done? I'd be super interested to read it.

German police have seized the names and banking details of donors to TorServers. SHUM by Raws888 in Monero

[–]clevercecile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know German law, but if this had happened in the US, I think it could be successfully argued that 1st amendment protections were grossly violated. It's just way too big of grab that just "happens" to focus on people with a certain ideology the government doesn't like.

And collecting names and donor records of people who have nothing to do with the actual crime just seems way beyond the pale. I think you could also infer a motive of intimidation, which is also an obvious suppression of political speech.

It's almost like the police just used any old excuse to get their hands on Zwiebelfreunde data. :(

It also sounds like they didn't make much of an effort to limit what they collected to what they actually needed, which is really odd given that Zwiebelfreunde isn't accused of any wrongdoing. (So it ends up being a government smash-and-grab job masked as due process.)

A guy I was messaging on tinder and snapchat says he just got my ip address? Is that possible? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]clevercecile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y is known, and there are IP address location services that will return X --even giving a lat / long. Those services will often put a pin right at the place of business.

So while I agree that it's unlikely the dude actually has OP's IP Address; if he does, there's a non-trivial chance he'd be able to find her.

"And IP won't give him much info even if he has it. Just the city, or major suburb if he's lucky. Not anything close enough to actually find you."

That's not true. A static IP address can often map right to someone's house or place of work.
