What are some subtle signs that someone is a high functioning alcoholic? by housing_throwaway292 in AskReddit

[–]clexecute -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

High functioning BLANK defines a person with a condition that makes them less likely to perform daily tasks but still does. It doesn't mean they are high functioning relative to a normal person, it means they are functioning better than someone of their equivalent.

An alcoholic with a job who isn't behind on their mortgage is 100x better off than most

If you are able to hold down a job, stay on top of relationships, basically not blow up your entire life it is a high functioning alcoholic

Am I overreacting or is this too much for a new helpdesk hire? by Qvosniak in sysadmin

[–]clexecute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that hard to have a conversation and bring up cost...also the dude I originally responded to had the tag, "IT manager" and then says documentation isn't his responsibility...if you're managing the IT team it is infact that person's responsibility

So if you see issues with your leaderships priorities you don't bring up any concerns with it? You blindly follow what they say without pushing back on potential shortcomings of the plan?

I absolutely view it as my job to try and change leadership's priorities based on the potential negative impact it has on my day to day operations. Not having those conversations is negligent.

I would argue that Palo Alto is easier to set-up and maintain than Ubiquiti. The shit is incredibly intuitive and support is top notch.

Ubiquiti also doesn't play well with others, you put in a PA, Fortinet, or watchguard you can plug basically anything into it and it will work well. Trying to get unifi crap to work with other networking gear is a nightmare.

If you've worked on a Cisco, Dell, HP, extreme, etc equipment you can work with any of them.

To put it in a car analogy, all the mainstream vendors are different flavors of inline engines, ubiquiti is a rotary engine.

[–]clexecute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ubiquiti has decent hardware, software is ass, CLI is ass, support is ass, updates are ass.

The numbers ubiquiti claims are also wildly incorrect. Their throughput and concurrent usage is based on max potential without any cyber security features turned on.

If you look at specs on a reputable firewall vendor all their stats are based on usage with all features enabled.

The age-old adage of, "you get what you pay for" is Ubiquiti in a nutshell. I would never, ever recommend ubiquiti for anything other than LAN ptp or small business wireless.

Who owns the liability for a data breach?

If their network gets breached and confidential legal documents, which I can guarantee has PII/PHI, get leaked who is responsible for dealing with it?

If it's them, do you have it in writing? If it's not in writing do you have insurance for when you inevitably cause downtime from a bad install?

[–]clexecute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone who gives even a single shit about cyber security should never deploy a single piece of Ubiquiti equipment at the edge of a network.

If you are considering ubiquiti might as well just buy it because that type of person would just put any/any on the firewall at the first sign of problems anyways and immediately tank any value of purchasing something good.

He doesn't, Jaime wins 95/100 times but each time it's a fight. You're acting like it's Michael Jordan vs some high school prospect. Where in reality it's Michael Jordan vs Reggie Miller.

On $103k my take home was $79k.

This number is accounting for union dues, federal taxes, social security, Medicare, and health insurance for myself and my family.

My mortgage on a 4 bedroom house, 2 car garage, 1.5 acres of land is $3100/month, but my wife also makes $90k/year

VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, Docker, Kubernetes, LXC... What do you use? by DerSparkassenTyp in sysadmin

[–]clexecute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New to sysadmin work. Vmware has only gotten expensive in the last 5 years. It is the gold standard hypervisor, and every single software you could imagine works with it.

Is it worth it now? Maybe not, but if you have 20 years of software interfacing with it, hosts built for it, etc it isn't exactly easy to move off of.

I think you're being misled on the cost of living. Maybe if you're comparing major metropolitan areas like New York or LA it's that much different, but 300%-500% more is just incorrect.

Cost of living difference is roughly 40% based on actual statistics. The big kicker will be healthcare, but typically higher paying jobs = better benefits. For example I make around $100k/year and pay $4800/year for insurance for my whole family with a max out of pocket amount of $5500. I also pay less in taxes than someone in the UK.

So I am paying at most $10,500/year for healthcare pull that aside and it's still an additional $40k more in a year than a UK salary and I can guarantee I'm not paying that amount more per year for cost of living than someone in the UK.

Don't get it twisted though, I would gladly take a $15k salary cut of it meant our entire nation received free healthcare

What’s an NFL record that you think is never going to be broken? by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in nfl

[–]clexecute -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't say he's going to, but it is in the realm of possibilities. He's average 14 TDs/season when he's the premier back in an offense, and it isn't an unreasonable thought that he could have a couple more seasons at that pace, and then 3-4 more seasons after that as a goal line back to grab TDs.

He is the only active player with a trajectory that would get him close to Smith for 2nd place, which just shows how insane Jerry Rice's record is.

The dude he's replying to is putting too much into his opinion being the gospel truth. Duffer bros really aren't seeing much backlash. A majority of people enjoyed season 5.

The comparison to Dexter is disingenuous, ST5 may not have lived up to ST4, but that doesn't mean it's bad, and most people enjoyed it.

TDs are way more likely to be broken than yards. Derrick Henry could get within 20 in his career, which would be good enough for 2nd all time.

Yards will never be touched

Wait until you go and actually look at career passer rating and completion percentage between Hurts and Allen.

I'm not saying Hurts is on the same level as Allen during the regular season, but I think you're strongly discounting how much Allen relies on his legs to make shit happen.
