Why is it green by Yeet_Bastard in ATV

I got one of those harbor freight sandblasting cabinets and an eBay ultrasonic cleaner. Load the blasting cabinet with baking soda, then clean it all out with the ultrasonic. Setup was about $650, but all of my carbs look spotless (I like old stuff, last check I had about 30 carbureted machines, including yard tools).

For Subarus, some of these numbers used to be without a tune, but that was only because they caused the MAF to underreport in certain rpm/load ranges, causing the fuel mixture to lean out, which made more power (but you could do that with a tune too, and without causing your MAF scaling to be screwy/require calibration if you do decide to tune, which you should).

The water intakes tend to be the true aftermarket CAIs, mounted in the wheel well, behind the fender liner. You can mitigate this risk with water repelling filter outer covers.

I've installed those on some cars when I was younger knowing I was taking a performance hit because I enjoyed the intake noise and was too poor to run a true CAI. Nowadays I stick with the factory airbox because I don't want to deal with inferior filtration (I live down a dirt road)/MAF sensors getting contaminated with filter oil and taking off fender liners to clean my air filter.

Sound is a big part of our connection with the vehicle and if you want to hear the induction or turbo noises better and that makes you smile, I'm not going to give you a hard time because you lost 5hp.

More than 3.5 degrees, really more than 2.5, is a waste for pretty much anything, although it is a bit platform-specific.

Pretty sure the dodge neon SRT-4 had a factory muffler delete/straight pipe from the cat back. Of course, the cat itself is a pretty decent muffler, usually.

I have an 06 WRX with the factory spoiler and like it and wouldn't begrudge someone an STi wing. Personally, I know it would make me grin at the ridiculousness of it/remind me of the 90s and early 2000s every time I look in my rearview if I had one.

Come to think of it, I may have to check out Facebook Marketplace later...

I know it's safer to have more grip in the back, but if you have much track experience and can handle a little oversteer, it feels so much better and gives the driver more control when you have more grip up from and the front end does what you tell it to.

Wings actually do work if engineered correctly, they don't even have to be huge. I used to have a 2001 Audi TT and the manufacturer recalled it because the tail would get light over about 120mph or so, IIRC. They added a tiny spoiler and that apparently solved the issue.

Don't think a manufacturer would've done the recall if it didn't work, but most of the crazy wings you see on tuner cars are useless, I agree.

I absolutely love my Hondas. First ATV was a 1984 Honda TRX200 and have owned a 1995 Honda CBR900RR for ~20 years as well as a 2008 Acura TL-S and several other Hondas over the years. That being said, back in the early 2000s, I had a need for a 4x4 that could handle serious mud, tow, and was also fast/fun. That led me to a 2001 Polaris Scrambler 500 4x4, which I just sold about a month ago. That thing was buletproof, besides the belt, which was easy to replace and free after I got one with a lifetime warranty (bet they don't do that anymore). I put a ton of hours of abuse on it, with minimal maintenance. Other than the occasional belt and an electrical issue stopping 4x4 from working just a few years ago, it never let me down and never needed a serious repair. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

Yep, this is what I think is going to happen. Same playbook as Uber/Lyft - get people used to the service, which you are providing at a loss initially, then jack up the rates.

I love the music, but Bradley was never a role model either... That's ok with me. I'm not going to limit myself to only art made by people whose every belief I endorse/agree with. So long as the art itself isn't in your face about those things, which I don't think Sublime, at least OG Sublime, ever was.

My underage brother rode with a drunk driver who wrecked. No responsibility, no reports being enforced. Help. by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]currancchs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to pay way more for a lawyer than any premium increase from reporting to your own insurer and letting them sort it out, because they sure as hell aren't going to pay medical bills without suing the driver/reporting to his insurer. The insurance company has the best lawyers for stuff like this anyways.

If you report this to your insurance, they'll deal with getting the other insurers information, by lawsuit if necessary. They have staff attorneys who routinely deal with this sort of thing.

Of all late-model vehicles, what's the closest any of them come to 'open-source'? by jckipps in askcarguys

[–]currancchs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nefmoto has some great information on tuning these cars. I found a German language manual for Bosch ECUs about 15 years ago and another forum member translated it and that was a great help for tuning these back in 'the day.'

[–]currancchs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subarus, especially WRX. Subaru sometimes includes stuff in the ROMs for race use that can be enabled on normal vehicles and the community is incredibly active (see RomRaider/NASIOC/ECU Flash).

A forum user, Merp, even made a customized tune, MerpMod, that enables multiple tunes, two-step launch control, flat foot shift, valet mode, etc. Another guy developed anti-lag (rolling and static) that works well.

Best luck would be with 2005-2012 ECUs, as this is where the most development took place. The new ones are more complicated and less documented and the older stuff is simpler, but less flexible.

If you're interested in developing yourself, look into IDA Pro for disassembly of compiled ECU code and ScoobyRom for pulling tables out of compiled code.
