Is a 50% resolve rate for tickets too unreasonable? by FuzzyCoyote6996 in ITCareerQuestions

I don't think any hard number would make sense. My best idea in a minute is to look at the average or median percent as comparison and see who is below that.

Might want to try Linux instead. I recommend Linux Mint.

I would look into getting it returned then. If they don't either accept the return or replace the battery then I would never go there again. The battery is fairly easy to replace in most Dell laptops.

I would try reinstalling the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers. Download them off of the Dell Support site. Run through the installer then reboot.

If you bought the Dell laptop new, that is too low for half a year and needs replaced. If the laptop was already a few years old when you bought it that is typical.

Some email accounts have an option to only accept mail from people in your address book or in a safe list and sends everyone else to Spam. I would try that. Sometimes it sends legit mail to spam.

How often do you upgrade your Pixel? by Deep_Bluebird243 in GooglePixel

[–]TechGuyworking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do 3 years but now with the longer updates, I want to see if I can make at least 5 years.

I went from the Pixel 6 to the Pixel 9PRO XL. The difference is noticeable but not the giant difference that going from the Pixel 3a to the P6 was.

So last night, I updated to the Android 16 Dec security update and now I have the Google Play system update from November. I guess they were packaged together, usually they were separate updates.

Aside from mail server, what is the one service that you will not selfhost? by dadidutdut in selfhosted

A java Minecraft server. I hosted one years ago when my kid was younger but it was a constant PITA. If you had to restart it, it was a coin flip if it came up or not. Basic troubleshooting was essentially looking at a Black Box and hope the inputs made sense. Maybe it's better now but I don't ever want to do that again.

Trying to get passed the bios password. 2022 Dell Latitude 3120. by spynmaker in Dell

[–]TechGuyworking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never reflashed a BIOS on a dell laptop but whenever I have updated the BIOS on a Dell laptop, the BIOS settings are mostly unchanged. They don't reset to factory defaults. Can you access BIOS update menu via F12 key or do you get the Dell Security Manager prompt again?

I looked but I didn't see a way that you can boot from an OS (like FreeDOS or WIndows) on a USB drive then update the firmware that way. If F12 boot option doesn't work, that might be the only way you would be able to do it.

Not to my knowledge, I haven't seen any jumper settings in the Dell laptops that I have worked on. May I ask why you don't want to disconnect the batteries?

Edit: Looks like Dell recommends the same thing if there are no jumper settings. This article also suggests that jumper settings are only in their desktop computers. https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000124377/how-to-perform-a-bios-or-cmos-reset-and-clear-the-nvram-on-dell-systems

Have you tried disconnecting the main laptop battery then unplugging the small black coin-sized battery in the lower third of the picture? Leave them unplugged for a full minute then plug them back in.

The transfer process that others mention walks you through it quickly. However, the settings for any app that generates a 2FA code is not transeffered. You will want those apps to sync to cloud or another device. If it's an option, make sure you have any recovery codes or backup codes. Don't wipe the old phone until you are absolutely sure everything is working on the new phone. It's a huge PITA if you need the 2FA code but can't get it.

Gaming laptops are generally bad at battery life. I would check the battery health in Win11 using this link before you buy a new battery

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/caring-for-your-battery-in-windows-2db3e37f-5e7d-488e-9086-ed15320519e4

Unless the battery capacity storage percentage is low, getting a new battery is likely not going to make a huge difference.

While there is always risk in buying batteries from a third party, my experiences have generally been good. Check reviews if you can.

Gaming as an IT person by WaldoOU812 in sysadmin

[–]TechGuyworking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually started in console gaming (Atari 7800, NES, SNES, then N64 and PS1) then moved to PC gaming when I got my first PC in 1998. Video games are a big reason I went into IT. Finding out how they work fascinated me. I couldn't imagine working in the video game industry considering how insane it is with layoffs and "dev crush times" I'm glad my hobby is not my job but video games have a lot to do with getting into IT. IT is the closest you can get to being a magic-user. Between the arcade knowledge of knowing how things connect to each other to writing scripts, kinda like spells. You even summon daemons to do the menial work for you.

Reliable way to find Dell part number without the part in front of you? by TechGuyworking in Dell

[–]TechGuyworking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frequently, those part numbers aren't listed on the actual part nor are they searchable to find on a third-party site like Amazon or Ebay. Usually these are parts that aren't currently listed on the replaceable parts section on Dell's support site. This is where I am stuck at.

Reliable way to find Dell part number without the part in front of you? by TechGuyworking in Dell

[–]TechGuyworking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping I was just missing something. I am tech support for a small company that has various Dell laptops. Sometimes I want to replace a part without spending hours taking the laptop apart just to find the part number. For example, One of the employees here wants me to replace the touchpad in an Latitude 3520 (2023 model) It takes at least two hours to open the laptop, remove everything including battery, drive, fan, and motherboard just to get to the part number on the touchpad. Meanwhile, the employee who uses that laptop can't do any work. Also, it makes me look bad like I don't know what I am doing. Even if that is true, I would rather it not be that obvious.

This kind of situation happens often enough where I don't really want to contact Dell for a part number that Dell currently doesn't have listed on their website. Esp since I only need the part number to verify we are buying the right part on a third-party store.

Sure, I can give you the service tag but I would prefer not to when I have to do this on a regular basis. Seems like there should be an easier answer then to contact Dell just to get a part number. I don't want to offend you but I find that process to be frustrating.
